Kiyoni led Jaysen toward Arktos' office, figuring it was a good place to start. Thanks to Jaysen she had managed to pull herself together and wasn't dreading seeing Arktos. Actually, she was looking forward to it. She missed seeing him in the evenings.
"Hopefully Arktos is in his office," she told Jaysen. "If not I'll have Elli see if she can contact Arkysk." She hoped it wouldn't be that complicated though. She was sure Jaysen would like to get settled in sometime soon. She stopped in front of the office and knocked.

Jaysen could only nod as he followed Kiyoni; Misty chittering with excitement. The gold firelizard had already adapted to her new home, and encouraged her pet to do the same. But the name of 'Arkysk' was totally unfamiliar to him. "Arkysk?" the young sailor asked. "But I thought all dragons' names ended with a tee-aych?" He was a bit confused, but decided to close his mouth before asking any other questions. There would be time enough for them later, but first to meet the Candidate Master.
((Apologies for the short post.))

Kiyoni nodded in answer to Jaysen's question as Rivi landed on her shoulder. The little blue knew who was on the other side of the door. "Dragons' names do, but Arkysk isn't a dragon. He's a black wher," she explained, not wanting to catch Jaysen too off guard. Rivi trilled happily and waited for Arktos to open the door. "He's a bit different from the dragons and protective of Arktos, but once he knows you it's not so bad." She managed to stem any more tears from falling as she thought about the black wher who had become very affectionate around her.

Arktos opened the door and his face was a mixture of surprise, happiness, and nervousness, when he opened it and saw the person at the door. But it was only a moment before he registered the presence of the boy and his face assumed a mask of stern pleasantness.
"Hello, Kiyoni. A new Search I presume?" He opened the door wider and Forge flew out, chittering a greeting to Kiyoni before settling back on his pet's shoulder. "Well, come in," he said, walking towards the desk and sitting down behind it. Arkysk stirred slightly on the dragon couch and the Candidate Master glanced at his bondmate for a moment before looking back at the searchrider and the Candidate.

Kiyoni's heart broke. She had treated him so badly, yet he seemed to be trying so hard. The search rider took a deep breath and pushed all her own feelings to the back of her mind. She'd concentrate on her feelings later.
"Yes, it is. This is Jaysen from Azul Isle. Jaysen, this is Candidate Master Arktos," she said, trying to keep her voice level. She hoped she was doing alright. Rivi chittered a greeting to Forge. He always liked coming for visits.

Jaysen could only nod and file the information Kiyoni gave him away for future reference. He'd never seen a wher before, but he supposed there was always a first time for everything. A man, much older than he, probably no more than thirty turns of age appeared in the doorway and the sailor couldn't help but note his reaction when he saw Kiyoni, then quickly shifted to cover it. It's almost as if the Candidate Master has feelings for Kiyoni, but something happened to test their bonds, Jaysen thought to himself. He'd always been attentive to detail, and his long turns at sea with his father helped develop an intuition to be alert of storms on the horizon. This situation was no different. Aye, rough seas indeed, which means there's a storm brewing nearby. Misty trilled a greeting at the bronze firelizard and his pet before Jaysen saluted the Candidate Master, then took note of the black wher. Interesting...
He turned his attention fully to Arktos. "An honor to meet you, Candidate Master," the journeyman fisherman and sailor greeted. "The trip here from Azure Isle was much faster than any ship I've ever sailed on."

Arktos glanced at the boy's knots. "A sailor, I see. Well, when you have your own dragon, you'll eventually forget how far apart places really are. But your training so far will help you, epecially as a weyrling. You have your Search token?"
After touching noses with his friend Rivi, Forge politely greeted the new gold, paying her lovlieness a crooning compliment. Arktos frowned slightly at his firelizard and got back to filling out his form, both trying to not look at Kiyoni and trying to glance at her surreptitously from the corner of his eye.

Kiyoni shifted a little as she listened. She wanted to make sure she was around if Arktos needed to know anything. And if she was actually honest with herself she wanted to be around him. They had had a rocky spell, no doubt, but she missed him terribly. Maybe, just maybe he'd have some free time later and they could spend it together.
Rivi chittered happily. Now he had another new friend. The little blue couldn't have been happier at the moment.

Jaysen handed the Candidate Master his Search token, and waited for the man to provide him with further instructions. He simply nodded when Arktos said distance would not be a factor once he Impressed. Yet the Journeyman sailor could feel the tension in the air between Arktos and Kiyoni; only the chittering of his gold firelizard at the bronze and the blue ones kept the awkward silence from completely dominating the room.
He couldn't help but notice Arktos shoot quiet glances at the Searchrider every so often. Frowning inwardly but keeping his face neutral, Jaysen hoped this wasn't a bad sign. He'd have to find out sooner or later what caused the seas to be so tempestuous. Kiyoni was now an older sister to him, and he vowed silently to do whatever he could to protect her heart from being further damaged.

He took the search token from the boy, flipping over the wooden disk to record the number, running his finger absently over Kioyni's sigil with a ghost of a smile. He fervently wished this didn't have to be a business visit because he missed her company more than he would have thought possible.
"All right, you can keep that now. You've had lessons with the harpers correct. You can read, write and figure? Oh, and how old are you?" Arktos continued, fixing the boy with an inquiring look. He assumed him to be an older teen, since he was a journeyman, but age was something the weyr kept careful track of.

Jaysen watched as Arktos flipped the Search token over and ran a finger over the other side of it, giving the barest trace of a smile. I was right. The man cares for Kiyoni deeply. Taking the token back from him, he nodded at the older man. "Yes sir," Jaysen replied. "I've passed my lessons with the Harpers at Azure Isle, and am able to read, write, and figure with a high level of proficiency. I'm also eighteen turns of age, recently walked the tables to receive my journeyman's knots."
Even though he kept his voice neutral yet pleasant, the young sailor couldn't help but continue to watch the situation carefully, as if watching the horizon for storm clouds. I must do my best to have Kiyoni explain to me what has happened here, if I'm to be of any help to her.

Kiyoni stared in surprise when she caught Arktos fingering the search token. Maybe they could get things worked out. They had talked quite a bit after the flight, but she had still felt a bit dirty and unworthy. But shards, she had missed him. It was time to move on. The green rider realized she had been staring and quickly blinked. She smiled when she heard Jaysen say he had passed all his lessons. She hoped he'd settle into being a candidate. He seemed extremely friendly and she liked the idea of having a younger brother.

"Excellent. I assume you'll want to continue your craft then? We don't have much call for sailors here but Im sure we can work something out."
Arktos rolled up the hide and placed it in a slot in the wall with the hides of all the other Candidates, "All right, I'm sure Kiyoni told you, but you'll be living in the infirmary for one sevenday, so the Healers can confirm your good health. The firelizard too. But you look healthyto me, so after your quarantine is over, you'll come back here to live in the Barracks until your Impression. So, if you'll just follow me."

Nodding, Jaysen acknowledged the Candidate Master's question. "If it's not too much to ask, sir. I'd also welcome the chance to help with the fishing and sailing classes. I've been able to swim since I was little, so I hope that will be handy." He watched as Arktos put the scroll into a cubbyhole, then did his best to hide his surprise over how he'd have to be quarantined for a sevenday. Misty chittered a question at him, trilling sadly. She didn't want to be without her pet, or without her new friends! Reaching up a hand to soothe his gold firelizard, it was all he could do to nod.
Jaysen rose to his feet, then looked at Kiyoni questioningly. He then started to mouth some words, slowly, for her to comprehend, but well out of Arktos' sight. Come find me after I'm in the barracks. I need to talk to you. Unable to get another message across, he began to follow the Candidate Master to the Infirmary.

Kiyoni's face flushed. She had totally forgotten to mention to Jaysen that he would be required to spend a seveday in the infirmary. Her mind definitely hadn't been on things that day. She owed Jaysen a big apology for that.
She nodded. I'm sorry, she mouthed back. I'll find you then. She watched quietly as Arktos led him away. She sighed softly. She wanted to get a chance to talk to Arktos some more.
