Arktos got up from his desk and turned to the boy, trying to telegraph with eyes to Kiyoni that he would be back in a moment if she would just wait. But he knew that wouldn't work, so he, feeling slightly sorry for it, mentally nudged Arkysk awake.
Please would you tell Kiyoni to wait for me here just one minute? I'll make it up to you[\I]
Yes Mine. the wher replied sleepily. He directed his thoughts to the Searchrider. Mine says would you please wait for him? He will be back very quick.
Meanwhile, Arktos noddded at Jaysen as they walked. "We'll talk to the Headwomam when you get out of quarantine. They have swimming lessons for weyr children and Candidates that don't know how. I don't know about fishing or sailing though. We don't get many Seacrafters around here, but maybe I'll just have you hold your own classes." It was nice to see a Candidate with initiative.
He pushed open the door to the infirmary and walked to the desk. "Here's another one for you. Jaysen, eighteen turns old, from Azure Isle." The healer behind the desk, who just happened at the moment to be Tesni, smiled brightly at him.
"You look fine to me. I'm sure we'll have you out of here in no time. You just leave him to me, Candidate Master."
Arktos nodded distractedly at Tesni. "I'll be seeing you in a sevenday," he said to Jaysen before walking as quickly as he could out of the door without breaking into a run, hoping Kiyoni was there waiting for him.

Jaysen managed to catch what Kiyoni had mouthed to him, then nodded at Arktos as they made their way to the Infirmary. "It'll be nice to help out with the training, sir," he said. "I look forward to the conversation with the Headwoman." Just then did the door open and the pair walked in, Arktos announcing to the woman behind the desk there was another arrival who smiled brightly at him. The Candidate Master told Jaysen he'd see him within a sevenday, earning another nod from the young sailor.
He then turned to Tesni. "Will Misty be allowed to stay with me, or will she need to be quarantined separately? She's been attached to me ever since I found her, newly hatched from her shell." Jaysen sincerely hoped the woman with short spiked hair would allow it; he'd hate to be without a single familiar face or touch.

Kiyoni watched the two of them walk out. She hadn't caught Arktos' look, so she nearly jumped when Arkysk spoke to her. A small smile touched Kiyoni's lips and she nodded. She quietly walked over to the couch and sat down, feeling exhausted. Normally Searches didn't take that much out her. She closed her eyes and waited for Arktos to return.
Rivi appeared a few seconds later and curled up on her lap with a soft croon. Kiyoni absentmindely scratched his eye ridge.

Tesni smiled at him. "Of course, we wouldn't part you from her. You just have to make sure she stays here. None of the weyr firelizards are allowed in this area either." She sighed at that. Itzal and Indra hated to be kept away. "But we'll just give you a check-up and I'll show you to where you'll be staying."
Meanwhile, Arktos made it back to his office and walked in the door to see Kiyoni sitting on his couch. He had been aching to see her but now he found he didn;t know what to say. They had not seen each other since the morning after the Flight and he didn't know what to think. He stood in the doorway nervously. "Kiyoni...I.."

Kiyoni had almost fallen asleep by the time Arktos returned. Rivi looked up at the new presence and cheeped softly. The search rider opened her eyes at the familiar voice and smiled tiredly. She shook her head. "Don't," she whispered. "I should have come to see you before this," she said, feeling awful about that. She loved the man, yet for some reason after their first morning together she had stayed away. She regretted that now and wished she could take it back. She wanted to be with Arktos no matter what.

Jaysen grinned when the woman - Tesni, was it? told him Misty could stay with him, but it would be his responsibility to keep his gold firelizard in sight at all times...and to make sure no other firelizards came in from the outside to avoid contracting cloudlung. "Fair enough," he said, then gave her a salute. "Ready to set sail, m'lady."
Misty chittered her own response. She was happy she'd be allowed to remain with her Pet, but disappointed she couldn't be with the blue or bronze firelizards she'd just befriended. She would have to settle for what she could get.

Tesni laughed. "Well, I don't think Ive ever been saluted before, but just follow me." She walked down the corridor to a door that said 'Candidate Quarantine' on it and pushed it open, turning directly into another room, lit brightly with glows and containing little more than a bed and a sink. The air smelled medicinal. "Just have a seat on the bed here, and we'll get started," she said, pulling out a clipboard and a carbon stick. "You are Jaysen, 18 turns, from Azure Isle," she muttered as she wrote. "Now, do you know anyone with Cloudlung currently?"
Arktos could tell Kiyoni was tired. He sat down on the couch next to her, near but nor quite touching. He wanted very much to hold her abs comfort her, but he felt unsure of where he stood. "I thought... maybe you regretted it.. and that was why you hadn't been back." That had been such a wonderful morning, and he really wanted to repeat it, every day if possible.

Jaysen followed Tesni down the corridor and into the room designated for quarantine of new Candidates. Misty flew off her perch and settled herself on the headboard, watching both humans with interest. Sitting on the bed as he was instructed, he waited, trying not to wrinkle his nose at the medicinal scent. He'd much rather breath in the smell of the sea. When asked if he knew of anyone with Cloudlung currently, he shook his head. "Not currently, no." That much was true, no one in his family currently suffered from it as far as he knew.
Yet in the back of his mind he kept wondering why Kiyoni never told him about having to be cordoned off like this...

Rivi chittered a greeting to Arktos before flying up to a rafter to be out of the way. Kiyoni gave him a tired smile and scooted closer to him. She rested her head on his shoulder with a sigh. "I don't regret it," she whispered softly. "I'm sorry I made you feel that way. I've just been so confused lately," she whispered.
The search rider didn't know what was wrong with her. She should had just gone back to him. She loved him and wanted to be with him as long as she could. To let him take her in his strong arms and comfort her, just like he had that first morning after the flight. But no, she had run off and then she had nearly messed up Jaysen's Search. She was falling apart.

"All right," Tesni said, checking off a box on her form and pulling a stethoscope from around her neck and blowing on the metal to warm it before putting the earpieces in her ears. "I'm just going to listen to your heart and breathing for a moment, so if you'll lift up your tunic for me, I promise not stare," she said cheekily, teasing him a little to put him at ease.
Down the hall, Arktos put his arms around Kiyoni pulling her closer and kissing her hair. "I have missed you," he said, his voice rough. Even he hadn't quite realized how much it had hurt him. "You can talk to me." He stroked her cheek with his thumb, wanting to be there for her, but not really sure he knew how.

The search rider closed her eyes at his light touch. "I'm sorry I stayed away," she whispered. "That was stupid on my part." Kiyoni looked up at him, sliding closer to him. She actually had a good thing with him and she had nearly blown it. "I know you are. I don't know why I didn't just come talk to you before," she admitted. "I've been so out of it that I totally forgot to tell Jaysen about the quarantine period." She shook her head angrily. "I nearly messed up the Search today."

Jaysen blushed a bit at Tesni's comment about her not trying to stare at him, then shrugged as he lifted his tunic up and over his head, revealing his torso and stomach. He wasn't as well-defined as some men his age were, but he was no slouch, either. Waiting until Tesni put the stethoscope to his chest, he'd take in a few deep breaths and exhale them slowly when she asked him. Though the way she blew on the metal suggested it would be a bit cold to the touch...
He also wondered idly what else she would want to check...

She couldn't help but smile at his blush. Boys were cute at that age. She placed the stethoscope on his chest, listening to the slightly rapid but normal beat. "Now, just take a few deep breaths for me." His chest sounded clear, but she placed the instrument on his back and asked him to take a few more breaths to be sure. "Your lungs sound clear," she said. "You can lower your tunic now. You are feeling all right? No fever or cough?" Azure Isle had not seen many death from Cloudlung, mainly due to it being an island, she was fairly sure this Candidate was in no danger. But everyone had to go through quarantine, there was no way to get around that.
"Well, you are here now, and I am glad. The Search went fine, the boy is here in one piece, and he looks perfectly healthy, so don't worry about it." He looked down at her and squeezed her shoulder. "But you look like you are dead on your feet. You need some rest, haven't you been sleeping?" he said sternly.
"It is time for my nap, and I think you need one too. Come, we are taking a nap," he said picking her up and carrying her towards the door of the sleeping area.

The search rider sighed. "But I never should have forgotten to mention that. It's important for the candidates to know what to expect," she whispered, glad that she was finally with Arktos. It had taken her too long to come see him again. Kiyoni's face reddened. "No, I haven't been able to sleep much," she said quietly. "But I am glad I'm here with you now."
Kiyoni leaned her head against his chest. "But what about the report I need to fill out?" she asked with a yawn. She closed her eyes briefly as he carried her to his sleeping area. She knew she needed to rest and being Arktos sounded appealing.

Jaysen took a few more deep breaths, letting them in and out slowly, then finally put his tunic back on. He nodded when Tesni asked him if he felt fine, then shook his head if he had fever or cough. "No m'lady," he said. "I haven't suffered from either one. My mother ensured my sister and me both were whole, hale, and hearty while growing up on the isle."
He looked at the woman and managed to keep his face as neutral as possible. Misty trilled softly at her pet. She knew he didn't like enduring something like this, but neither one could do anything about it. Not for a full sevenday at best.
