Kikaya had tried talking to her brother about how she felt. And M'cal had been willing to listen, but it wasn't the same. She was getting older and she needed a friend. She had tried talking to Kanly and Quindara, but it just hadn't worked well yet. She would just have to try harder. She wasn't a quitter. Especially after four Turns under K'ain's rule. And now that she was safe she definitely wasn't going to quit.
The girl smiled as she watched Ralith. The gray was up to her old tricks again. Ralith had definitely improved from being at Nova. She had filled out nicely and her hide shined. And Kikaya had actually been enjoying the lessons they were getting. Ralith was so busy playing around that she nearly ran over another weyrling and his little dragon.
Kikaya's face flushed. "I am so sorry," she said, rushing up to them as Ralith hung her head.
I'm sorry, the gray said. I didn't mean to. I was just playing.
Kikaya quickly soothed her dragon. The gray leaned into her rider's side.

N'huel had been sitting in the weyrling's bowl, fingering his harp lightly as he pondered a new piece of music. Inarith lay beside him in the short grass, for the moment content to lie in the sun and listen to his lifemate's playing. But their solitude was interrupted by a near collision with a gray dragon, full grown, which was odd and marked her as belonging to a rogue rider. This did not bother N'huel really, in fact he was slightly intrigued, so once he was sure his harp was unharmed he stood up and nodded. "It's fine, no harm done."
Inarith stood as well, stretching his small frame like a cat. At three months old he was still only six feet in length and about five foot high sitting up, about the size of a newborn bronze and much smaller than the fully grown gray. That's okay. I like playing too. I'm Inarith. I've seen you at lessons I think.
Like most dragons, Inarith's memory was less than stellar, thought it was better than the majority of his clutchmates'.

Ralith seemed to brighten up after Inarith said it was alright. The gray had never seen a white before, but she liked everyone, no matter the color. Well, except for Joreth. She hadn't liked him at all. I'm Ralith, the gray said happily. She bobbed her head. Me and Mine just started lessons again. I like them.
Kikaya smiled slightly, her hazel eyes actually having a soft look to them. She absently brushed her short hair out of her face as she watched him put his harp away. She hoped Ralith hadn't done any damage. "Your harp is okay?" she asked worriedly. The young gray rider knew what would happen if she was back with K'ain and something like this happened.

Inarith stretched, fluttering his wide, nearly transparent wings, and stood. I like lessons too but I wish I could fly already. I would take Mine everyehere, and fight Thread when it comes. You can fly already can't you?
N'huel nodded, keeping one eye fixed on his often mischievous dragon. "It's fine. believe me. If my harp was damaged, well let's just say I know a lot of creative curse words. You are new here, I gather?" he said, delicately avoiding calling her a rebel or a rogue. From what he'd heard, most of the younger generation didn't know any better way, so it was hardly fair to imply that they were doing something wrong. Besides, he was dying for information about the other dragonriders, it would hardly do to upset this potential fountain of knowledge.

Ralith bobbed her head. Yes, I can fly. It is fun. You will like it, the gray said. I take Mine places, but I don't know very many places yet. The pair were still learning. They had never been allowed out of the Frozen Wastelands after all.
Kikaya smiled slightly. She was glad that Ralith hadn't damaged anything. "A harp?" she asked brightly. It had been so long since they had heard music. K'ain seemed to frown on anything that could be construed as fun or relaxing. Even their lessons had been hard and ones that she would rather forget. The girl nodded. "We've only been here about two months," she answered softly. She still wasn't sure how a lot of people felt about having them at the Weyr. She wouldn't blame them for being leery.

When I can fly, I'm going to go every place on Pern! Like, any youngster, he changed subjects quickly. Do you like to swim? I am just learning how to swim. he said, his tail flicking back and forth with excitement.
N'huel could see a hunger in her eyes that he knew well, a hunger for music. He supposed after what he had heard, that her life, or at least the past few years of it, had not been happy. "Would you like me to play something for you?" he asked, running his fingers lightly over the strings. Really, gitar would be best, she needed something lively, but it was in the Barracks. "I could play pipes for you too. How do you like it here so far?" N'huel wondered how the rest of the weyr was treating her, she seemed lonely.

Ralith seemed to laugh as she listened. She liked this little white. I do, she answered cheerily. It was cold where I was before though. She remembered the water always being cold on her hide. She fluttered her wings a little as she thought about it.
Kikaya's eyes lit up at his offer. "Oh, I would so like that," she said, actually smiling. She hadn't heard music in so long. And she was feeling extremely lonely at the moment. "You play pipes too?" she asked curiously. She had never gotten a chance to really learn an instrument. The young gray rider shrugged. "I like it here a lot better then where I was before," she said, looking over at him. "But it's kind of lonely here." She didn't want to bad mouth the Weyr. It was great. She just really hadn't made any friends yet.

I don't think it gets cold here. Mine? Does it get cold here? the white asked curiously, feeling that he understood what cold was, but had never felt it before. It was from his lifemate's memories that he understood the concept, but having not left the weyr or gone between, he'd never been anywhere cold.
"No it doesn't normally get cold here, Inarith," N'huel replied, "Just rainier." He pulled out his reed pipes and smiled at Kikaya. "These were my first instrument, they're fairly common around the docks. My father was a sailor," he explained. "You should try to get to know the other weyrlings. They aren't as likely to be afraid of you or dismiss you as the older weyrfolk might." Then without further prelude, he put the pipes to his lips and blew an experimental note. It was low and mournful, but the next one was high and light. From that note he played a rollicking dance tune, something you might likely hear in a less reputable bar, but it was bright and lively.

Ralith almost started to prance in place. Oh good! I don't like the cold. I like this much better, the gray said happily. She was already liking being at Nova.
Kikaya smiled slightly as she watched her gray. She'd never seen Ralith so happy before. She turned back to N'huel. "Maybe I will," she said quietly. Kanly had gotten along with Quindara easy enough. Maybe she would be able to find a friend too. The girl's eyes lit up when he pulled the reed out. "A sailor?" she asked curiously. That would be an interesting job. Kikaya listened happily as he started to play. Before long the girl was clapping her hands along with the tune.

I have never been cold but it doesn't sound like fun. But would you like to swim with me while Ours talk? Inarith asked, eyes shining hopefully.
N'huel finished the song and nodded. "There's much to be said about the life of a sailor, all the adventure and seeing new places. But its a dangerous job too, many men die every year. There aren't many women in the craft. But the sea does seem to inspire music. Most of the locals could play at least one instrument no matter what their craft. I suppose K'ain did not encourage that sort of thing. But perhaps you might want to learn to play now?" he asked. It would be fun to teach again. That had been part pf his duties at the Hall, but his students had always been very young.

I did not like being cold, the gray said. That was one thing that she would never forget. Ralith nodded. I would like that. The water is so warm here.
Kikaya listened happily to the music. It had been far too long since she had heard an instrument or singing. The girl smiled when N'huel finished. "I'm sure it is dangerous. But seeing so many places would be fun." The gray rider shook her head. "Not at all. I don't think any of us were even brave enough to suggest music." Her hazel eyes lit up. "Really? I would love to learn," she said excitedly. She wasn't sure if she would be any good, but it would be fun to try.

Oh good! Let's go! Inarith said, standing quickly and dashing to the water of the small lake in the Weyrlings Bowl. He stopped on the shore, looking to N'huel for permission as well as making sure Ralith was coming. N'huel waved at Inarith. "Just be careful, don't go out too far," he said before turning back to Kikaya.
"Well, I'd be glad to teach you the pipes... Or the gitar, but I'd have to get that from my room."

Ralith bugled happily and followed Inarith. The gray liked having a new friend. And swimming sounded like lots of fun. She looked back at her rider, but Kikaya just waved her hand. Let's play! she said, splashing into the water.
Kikaya laughed as she watched her gray. She couldn't remember the last time she had laughed, but she liked it. It made her feel good. She turned her attention back to N'huel. "You'd be willing to teach me?" she asked, her hazel eyes dancing. "Pipes are fine, but I don't know if I'll be any good," she warned him. She didn't want to disappoint him, but she had a feeling she probably wouldn't be good.

Inarith made a bugling croon noise that sounded for all the world like a giggle, at least to N'huel, and rushed into the lake. He spread his wings as he ran into the wavelets, sending a spray of droplets across the sky. Then the little white dove into the water, pulling all his limbs against his sides and whipping his tail back and forth like a fish, much more graceful in water than on land. After a moment, he popped up like a cork. The water feels good!
N'huel shrugged, a slight grin tugging at his mouth. "No one is ever good at first, but the pies aren't difficult once you get the hang of it. Have you ever blown across the top of a bottle?" Glass bottles were not common, but neither were they unheard of.
"That's how you play, you blow across the top of the opening just right and a sound comes out." N'huel blew across the largest of the tubes in the pies and a mournful note rang out.

Ralith watched Inarith closely. The gray seemed to laugh as he dove under water and soon reappeared. This was going to be a fun playmate. The gray plunged into the water, ready for some fun and games. She splashed around, making small waves. It is nice! she exclaimed.
Kikaya actually giggled at her dragon's antics. She hadn't felt this happy in quite some time. The girl turned back to N'huel. "Umm, once, when I was still with my family." Those times were still hard to remember without crying. She managed to hold it together this time though.
The young gray rider watched N'huel closely. Her eyes widened in surprise. "That's really all you have to do?" she asked. She couldn't believe it. It sounded simple enough.
