Inarith looked almost like a Hatchling still next to Ralith but he didn't seem to mind. He splashed her with a wing before diving back under the water, holding his breath as long as he could before shooting back up again. Have you ever seen a shipfish, Ralith? Mine has memories of them, they jump out of the water like this, he said, showing her his favorite mental picture of shipfish leaping in front of the bow of a ship.. I want to do that too but Mine says I don't have the right kind of tail. he said, wagging his long whippy tail in demonstration.
N'huel nodded to Kikaya, wincing inwardly at the shadow of pain crossing her face. "That's the basic idea anyway. The hard part is being able to make the sound quickly and accurately. Each pipe can make several notes depending on where you put your mouth. It just takes practice." He blew a quick scale across the tubes and handed her the instrument. "There, you try. Start on the widest pipe first, that's easiest." the openings for the pipes were smaller than that if bottles so it was sometimes hard to get the resonance going right away.

Ralith watched Inarith, almost seeming to laugh as the white disappeared underwater. She didn't seem to mind that he was smaller then her. She liked having a friend to play with. Shipfish? she asked curiously. She had never seen or heard of one before. But then again, it had been cold where she was. Ooh! That does look like fun! she exclaimed when Inarith showed her. She bugled happily when he flipped his tail around.
Kikaya tried to mask her sorrow. She hadn't meant to let N'huel see that. It wasn't his fault that she had been trapped with the Rebel Weyr. The gray rider watched his fingers closely. She looked up at him in surprise. "I don't know if I can do this or not," she said, carefully taking the pipes. She didn't want anything to happen to them. The girl tried to do what he had told her to do, but when she blew through the pipes it wasn't at all a nice sound. Her face reddened a bit.

The little white dragon bobbed his head in assent. Mine says when I can fly, we will go to see them. You can come too! he said happily before flipping onto his back to float lazily and look up at the graying sky. The rains would come as soon as the day cooled. They did every day during this season.
N'huel wondered how Kikaya felt about being volunteered for such a trip. He had mixed feelings for himself. He had planned it to be a special time for just he and Inarith, yet he could see that his dragon thrived on friendship, and he could hardly deny him. Plus, he had to admit he had been lonely, he had kept himself aloof from the other Candidates, not wanting them to fall prey to Haidar's taunting. And also, he had to admit, Kikaya was pretty as well. He pushed the thought aside.. Now was not the time for romantic fancies.
"Don't get discouraged, it was all right for a first try. At least you made a sound. Just don't blow so hard, and hold the pipe at a right angle to the air, so it flows across the top of it," he said gently.

Ralith looked over at Inarith. Really? We can go too? I would like to see the shipfish you talk about. And I know Mine would like to too. Of course she was answering for Kikaya without asking her, but the gray wasn't thinking about that. She was just thinking about the idea of making a new friend.
Kikaya was surprised by Ralith's answer. What was her gray getting them into? Although she knew making friends at the Weyr wouldn't be a bad thing. This was her home now after all. She glanced up at N'huel, feeling her face reddened a bit more. She couldn't help but think he was cute. The girl couldn't believe she had thought that. Hadn't she just said that she wasn't ready for that kind of relationship? Well, perhaps she was. She quickly pushed that thought aside.
She managed a sheepish smile. "I'll try," she whispered. It had been so long since she had even heard music. Kikaya tried to do what N'huel suggested and blew into the pipes again. She was nervous to know what kind of sound she would make this time.

A low haunting note came from the pipes and N'huel smiled a true smile, light dancing in his green eyes. "See now, I told you it wasn't so hard. Now try all the other holes. If you ca do them all in a row, you'll have done a scale. Once you can do that, it will be easy to learn a simple song." It surprised even him how much he was enjoying teaching Kikaya. She was eager to learn, and he supposed it pleased him to see her smile.
Inarith was also happy to see His making a friend, and he was having fun with Ralith. Yes, I can't wait to see the ocean. Mine shows me many memories of it from when he was young. It is like the lake, but many, many times bigger. he said, spreading his wings wide and spinning in a circle for emphasis, causing water to spray everywhere.

Kikaya's hazel eyes widened in shock when a sound that actually sounded good came from the pipes. She looked up at N'huel, a smile splitting her pretty face. She couldn't remember the last time she had been so happy or actually smiled. "All the holes?" she asked. Hmm, that might be a bit harder, but she was willing to try. She liked N'huel teaching her and she would try her best to make him happy. The girl worked on positioning her fingers before blowing into the pipe again, moving her fingers in what she hoped was the right way. She wasn't quite sure.
Ralith glanced over at her rider. Kikaya didn't smile too often and the gray liked seeing her smile and happy. It is that big? the gray asked in surprise. She couldn't imagine something that big. I want to see it! It sounds like fun! She laughed as Inarith splashed water, getting her wet as well.
