Jaysen breathed a sigh of relief when he had been discharged from the Infirmary after his mandatory sevenday stay. Cloudlung was never a pretty thing, and once the Healers declared him and his gold firelizard disease-free it felt like he'd just come through a storm at sea. The only exception was the Touching, but he was warned to stay away from the other Candidates during that time. At least one girl caught his eye, but Jaysen wasn't able to approach her to find out her name.
The young sailor and his companion were lounging in the Commons Room at the moment, having just unpacked his gear and giving Misty some dried fish as a treat. The tiny queen trilled with delight as that was her favorite, and gave her pet a nuzzle on his cheek as her way of thanking him. She then chittered a question. "I don't know where the other firelizards are, Misty," Jaysen replied. "I know you'd like to play with them, but I haven't seen Kiyoni lately and the Candidate Master has been busy." That was an understatement; Kiyoni never told the young man he had to be quarantined. There was also something else he wanted to find out. She was like an older sister to him, and that protective streak was starting to show. Misty picked up her pet's mood, and trilled at him.
He sighed. "You're right. I can't do much about it for now." He wondered idly if any of the other Candidates would show up.

"Storm, no!" Calyssa shouted as she ran after her bronze firelizard. The bronze had a small gold bracelet in his mouth and was chittering happily. He was enjoying the game. Calyssa on the other hand wasn't. She was disgusted with her bronze at the moment. Her mother had given her the bracelet and she didn't want to lose it. She hadn't even noticed Jaysen or Misty as she tried to catch Storm.
Normally she would have asked Sertex to help her, but she knew her brother was buried up to his nose in studying his notes. The boy wanted to make sure that he didn't forget anything important.

Jaysen's and Misty's attention were diverted at the sound of someone shouting, followed by a fluttering of wings and a chittering. A firelizard streaked through the room, followed by a girl of about fourteen or fifteen years screaming at it and chasing it. The Journeyman sailor blinked, confused; yet Misty quickly rose up and started chasing after the firelizard. "Misty!" Jaysen shouted, rising to his feet and nearly colliding with the girl, causing him to trip over himself and crash onto the ground. The queen firelizard halted in mid-flight and chittered angrily at the other firelizard - a Bronze - and the girl before landing next to her pet. How dare they cause him to hurt himself!
Jaysen rolled over onto his back and groaned. He didn't think anything was broken, but he was sore. "Owww..." he complained. Misty trilled sadly at her pet. "I think I'll be fine, Misty..." Jaysen replied, slowly getting up. "Though I'm going to feel that one later." He made his way back over to the couch and half-crawled onto it, laying himself out to ease the pain. The gold flittered about for a moment, then landed near her pet, eyeing the Bronze and the girl warily. If either one tried to approach her pet, she'd hiss at them.

Storm hadn't noticed Misty until the gold took off after him. He swiveled his head around in surprise. A gold! And a new playmate! Storm liked the looks of this.
Calyssa was knocked out of her anger by Jaysen's shout. She just managed to side step him, but gasped as he fell. She started toward him but froze when she saw Misty. She had a feeling the little queen wasn't going to let her near Jaysen. Storm landed on Calyssa's shoulder with a soft cheep, dropping the bracelet.
"Are you okay?" Calyssa asked worriedly, watching the young man. He looked older then herself and if she was guessing right he spent a lot of time outside in the sun.

Jaysen managed to turn his head over to see who it was, and he realized it was the same girl he'd seen a few days ago. Turning his head a bit more, he could now see it was a bronze firelizard his gold had started to chase. Which meant Misty had tried to help the girl only to become protective of her pet as soon as he crashed to the ground. He looked up at the queen firelizard, and caressed her head. "It's alright, Misty," he said. "They know it was an accident." Misty chittered, then jumped down to land on her pet's chest, and curled herself into a ball, her eyes never leaving the girl nor the bronze.
Jaysen gave the girl a half-grin, but he was still in some pain. "I'll be fine, miss...miss..." He blushed. He didn't even know her name, and yet here she was over him like a pretty young Healer who didn't have a weyrmate. "Forgive me, but I saw you at the Touching a few days ago, but couldn't come close because I was still technically under quarantine. I wanted to introduce myself, but I never imagined it'd be like this or under these circumstances."

Storm bowed his head and chittered and apology to Misty. He hadn't meant to injure anyone. He just liked to play from time to time. Calyssa scratched his eyeridge to put him at ease.
"Storm's sorry for causing you to fall," she said. Her blue eyes sparkled as she watched Misty and Jaysen. It was amazing how protective they could be. She brushed her bangs out of her eyes, studying Jaysen. She had seen him at the Touching, but she hadn't seen him since then.
"I'm Calyssa and this is Storm," she said by way of introduction. She giggled softly. "Definitely not the best way to meet. I saw you there to. Wasn't quarantine the pits?" she asked, still keeping her distance in case Misty was mad.

Misty looked at the bronze and simply blinked at him. She wasn't sure what to make of him, and his pet quickly apologized. The queen trilled something in response. "Misty's always been protective of me," Jaysen explained. "But she accepts your apology." He couldn't help but to be drawn in by the girl's blue eyes, and he found himself blushing again when she took a hand to brush the bangs from her eyes, only for his face to redden even further when she giggled.
"I'm Jaysen, by the way. Recently come from Azure Isle. My father's a fisherman and sailor, and he often took me on his fishing expeditions. But yes, quarantine isn't any fun. Reminds me too much of the doldrums." He figured he'd have to explain. "Really calm winds that don't push on your sails, making it hard to move and forcing you to rely on pulling the oars."

Storm perked up a little and his eyes whirled happily. He chittered a greeting to Misty, flapping his wings just a bit. Calyssa giggled again. "Storm can be the same way, so I can understand why Misty was protective of you," she smiled. Storm bobbed his head again and watched Misty.
Calyssa hadn't noticed Jaysen's blush. She was too busy feeling a bit awkward herself. Which was strange for her. She was normally fine around anyone, but for some reason she felt her cheeks heating up a bit while she talked to Jaysen. "I am still sorry about knocking you down though," she apologized.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Jaysen. I've heard of Azure Isle. I'm from Crooked River. Apprentice beastcrafter, but I have been on a few ships," she smiled. She chuckled. "That's a good description. There wasn't anything to do while in quarantine."

Misty chittered at Storm, her eyes indicating she would be accepting of the bronze firelizard and his pet, provided they were respectful. Jaysen, on the other hand, simply gave Calyssa a warm smile when she said her firelizard was just as protective, and apologized for knocking him down. He shrugged. "I've been through worse. Riding thirty-foot storm surges tends to do a lot more than tripping over your own feet."
He simply nodded when the other Candidate told him she was from Crooked River. "I can't ever say I've been to Crooked River, but I've heard of it. At least you've been on a few ships, so..." He blushed. "Maybe sometime we can go boating on the lake? Forgive me if I sound a bit forward, but so far you're the only girl I've met who knows her way around the water. As for being in quarantine, well...you'll find I tend to use ocean analogies frequently. Spending most of your time near the water tends to do that to you."

Storm bowed his head again. He would be more careful for now on and respect her and her Pet. He hadn't meant to act so badly. Calyssa scratched the bronze's head. "Hmm, I guess that would be much worse then just fallin over," she agreed with a small shutter. She knew for a fact it could be worse.
Calyssa smiled, her blue eyes lighting up. "Then it sounds like we're in the same boat," she teased. The young candidate hesitated for just a minute, but then nodded. "I would like that," she said. "And no, it's fine. Being straight is a goos trait. At least I don't have to guess what you're thinking," she smiled, absently brushing her hair out of her face. "I can see how that would make sense. I've grown up around animals my whole life, so I apologize now if I start comparing things to animals or anything related to them."

Misty trilled at Storm, thanking the bronze for his candor. Jaysen, on the other hand, grinned when Calyssa teased him slightly, and his grin only grew broader when she accepted his offer of going out on the lake with him sometime...and complimented him on being straight with her. "My father was a gentleman through and through. I guess it rubbed off on me after all the time I spent with him at sea, watching him treat my mother and sister with respect."
He had to nod, though, at her animal analogies. "I can understand that, but I never been around animals much save for Misty." He reached up and rubbed the underside of her muzzle. "She's more like family, though, so me calling her an animal would be an injustice." The queen firelizard chittered at her pet. Of course she was his only family here at the Weyr! Jaysen had to blush at her chittering, then turned to look at Calyssa.
"I wonder where the other Candidates are?" he asked.

Calyssa continued to smile. She was enjoying this conversation with Jaysen. It had been great fun meeting the new candidates and wouldn't Sertex be surprised when his little sister said she made a new friend? Calyssa grinned at the thought. She loved her brother and stayed close to him, but sometimes he could be too protective. "Well, it sounds like your father raised you well and is a very kind man," she said cheerily.
Storm cheeped at Misty again. Calyssa shook her head. "That's alright. Not everyone is around animals all the time." She chuckled. "I know the feeling. Storm would have a fit if I called him an animal. And they really do become your best friends."
Calyssa looked around. "I'm not sure. I know my brother's in his room studying, but I don't know about the others."

Jaysen found himself quickly falling for this young lady in front of him, but he wasn't quite sure if it was just his own feelings or if Misty actually liked Storm, and those feelings were being transmitted to his mind. I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually. Still, there's no need to rush things between Calyssa and me. I've only just met her. Her comment about his father caused his chest to swell with pride, but brought a touch of sadness as well. "He is. But it's been difficult not to see him before I was Searched and brought here to Nova. At least Searchrider Kiyoni promised she'd send word to my family when it came time to Impress, so that's something to look forward to."
He did raise an eyebrow when Calyssa mentioned she had a brother. Great. That means I get to brave the waters to earn his trust. Taking Misty into his hands so he could move her off his chest, he rose to his feet then set his queen firelizard on his shoulder. "I'd like to meet him if it's alright with you, Calyssa. Wouldn't hurt to make new friends."

The teen found herself blushing for no real reason at all. Of course Jaysen had been the first person she had felt comfortable talking to since Braden had died. She watched him quietly, trying to figure out what it was about him. Storm trilled softly and Calyssa glanced at the bronze. "Oh, that must have been hard," she agreed sympathetically. "I know I'm real close to my father and Tesni told us the same thing. She's make sure he got here." She couldn't wait to see her father again.
She smiled as he sat up. At least he could still move, so apparently he hadn't been hurt too bad when he fell. She would have felt awful about that. "Sure. I could send Storm to fetch him," she offered. "He needs to take a break anyhow."

He saw Calyssa blush, prompting him to blush as well as his feet were finally able to support him. Jaysen supposed it was mostly a mix of feelings, but he knew he couldn't charge blindly into the waves. Not this time. He did nod, though, when Calyssa told him she was close to her father. "I'd like to meet him at the Hatching," he said thoughtfully. "I'll be pleased to introduce you to my mother, father, and my younger sister if they arrive in time."
He looked at Storm when his pet suggested to send him to fetch the sibling, then looked at Misty. Her eyes whirled with curiosity, prompting the young sailor to chuckle. "Something tells me Misty wouldn't mind joining Storm," he said. The queen firelizard trilled at him, then at Storm. "If it's not too much to ask, can she join him in getting your brother here?"
