It's always fun when we have ours with us, Coth shared Elliwodth's sentiment. Turning his head as quick as he could, he couldn't avoid getting wet by the Green's wave. Bugling in response, the Bronze slapped his tail on the water to get the smaller dragon wet.
G'rett merely chuckled when he saw Rivi, Kiyoni's firelizard, try his best to get him wet...but just like his lifemate, was unable to avoid the splashing water sent at him by the Searchrider. He quickly shook out the excess water from his hair and laughed. That's when he looked toward the other side of the lake and pondered for a moment. It didn't seem too far away, but looks could be deceiving. The opposite shore directly from him, though, was a much shorter distance. G'rett knew the water would be deep enough for him to actually swim in, but not deep enough to be in any real danger of drowning. It would probably come up to just above his head. If Kiyoni wanted to prove her athletic abilities, well...
Grinning at her, he started to swim away. "Race you to the other side, Kiyoni!" he shouted.

Elliwodth seemed to laugh as she managed to get Coth wet. She was enjoying herself. She hadn't played like this in the water for a long time. The green tossed her head in surprise when Coth managed to splash her back.
Rivi gave up on trying to soak G'rett and went to playing with his cousins. At least he could play with them.
Kiyoni giggled as she managed to get G'rett wet. "Sorry," she said innocently. "Did I get you wet?" Not that she was sorry at all. She was enjoying herself. She tried to figure out what he was looking at, but wasn't sure. The green rider was confused when he started to move away from her.
"You're on!" she laughed, moving toward him. So, he wanted to race? She could do that.

Coth turned his head to watch as the two Riders started to swim towards the opposite shore, and soon figured out what his bonded was up to. He had challenged Elliwodth's! The Bronze then turned to look at the other dragon. Seems Mine has challenged Yours to a race of sorts, Elliwodth. I think he'll win.
G'rett looked over his shoulder when he heard Kiyoni accept his challenge and merely grinned. He then turned back around and started to pick up his pace a little, arms and legs moving as fast as they could so he could cut through the waves with relative ease. He'd always been a decent swimmer since he was younger, and the countless candlemarks he'd spent practicing his swordplay meant he'd have plenty of stamina to go the distance. G'rett didn't want to beat Kiyoni too badly, so he purposely slowed down every now and then. Just when it seemed like the Searchrider was about to catch up, the Wingleader took off again. He had always been fond of the slightly-older girl, but could never bring himself to tell her so. Besides, to him she was a valuable friend and ally, and he didn't want to put their friendship at risk. It would be easy to get caught up in the moment and get himself lost in Kiyoni's charms, but both of them would probably regret it much later. If and when Elliwodth Rose and should Coth Fly her well...G'rett would have a valid excuse. Dragonlust was very difficult to control, and during Aylinth's Flight that proved to be the case. He'd never liked being subject to the sheer emotions running through his body whenever Coth gave Chase. He'd much rather prefer being in control of those emotions himself on his own terms. Then again, the woman whose bed he would wind up sharing when Coth finally won a Flight would be very fortunate indeed. Most men often gloated over the fact they freely took a woman's virginity when the man often lost his at an early age. G'rett wasn't like that though; he'd kept his virginity intact throughout his teenage years, and was proud of it. The lads back at Nova Hold often derided him for it, but the girls always thought he was an honorable fellow.
No wonder G'rett had borne so many scars on his body.

Elliwodwth turned to watched the two riders. She seemed to laugh. In her eyes they were acting funny. I don't know. Mine likes to swim. She is always swimming. I think she will win, the green told Coth.
Kiyoni grinned and dove into the water. She hadn't had a good race in quite some time. Her and T'mil used to race but that was before his death. Since then she had still kept up her swimming, but she hadn't actually raced anyone except for Elliwodth. The young search rider smiled when she noticed him slow down. Well, she liked that, but she would prove to him that she could hold her own too. Although she found her mind drifting to other things while they swam. Why couldn't she get that picture out of her head? Sure, she liked G'rett as a friend, but that was it. Maybe Elliwodth was getting close to rising. Which would suit Kiyoni fine. Then she'd have a good excuse. But then again, maybe she was lonely. She had enjoyed her time with Arktos, but it appeared that the two of them were taking things slow. And watching G'rett swim wasn't helping Kiyoni any. She felt her face flush at a thought.

G'rett was nearly halfway across the lake when he afforded another glance over his shoulder. Kiyoni appeared to be closing the gap, slowly but surely. What he saw, though, in her face was most likely the same feeling that was now stirring in him and slowly working its way towards his loins. He knew that feeling all too well, and he quickly turned away as a grimace came to his lips.
It was lust, pure and simple. Not the type of lust that consumed him when Coth gave Chase, but it was very similar. G'rett had managed, albeit barely, to keep it from driving him into the first random woman's arms after losing Aylinth's Flight. He really didn't need to give in to it at the moment. Especially with Kiyoni around. Oh sure, she was pretty in his opinion. But the Wingleader wished this onset of lust had been caused by a Flight, and not by his own desires. It would have been so easy to blame what amounted to a one-night affair on dragonlust. G'rett didn't have a weyrmate or lover yet, but had made a promise to a certain redheaded Candidate. He did warn that particular young woman that if Coth won any Flights between now and the time she became a Rider in her own right, there wasn't anything he could do about it. Truthfully, G'rett wanted to give his virginity to that redheaded girl. It was tempting enough to give it to Kiyoni instead.
So much for a day of rest. The Wingleader redoubled his efforts to reach the shoreline first. But he would have to ask the one question he dreaded to know the answer to:
Just when exactly would Elliwodth Rise. If the Green was close, well...then it wouldn't be quite *so* bad. If it was still a ways off, G'rett would have to do something about his rising desire...and he was almost certain that same level of intensity was rising in the Searchrider behind him...

Kiyoni tried to concentrate on just swimming and not the man in front of her. She couldn't remember the last time she had felt so giddy. She felt like she was a teenager again. When she had first Impressed and didn't know how to control the emotional bond that she had with her dragon. But Elliwodth was seven now. Surely she could control that now.
But was this all Elliwodth's doing or was her body trying to tell her something? It wasn't like Kiyoni slept around. The only time she did was during Elliwodth's flight and surely Arktos would understand. She was only human afterall. Kiyoni groaned. Shard it anyhow. What was she going to do when they finally reached shore? Maybe she could brush it off. She glanced back up at G'rett and sighed. Nope, that definitely wasn't going to work. Apparently she would just have to face the music.
It wasn't like she had actually said anything to G'rett, so maybe things would be okay. Maybe it was just her. But then again she wasn't so sure about that either. One way or the other she was going to have to figure something out before her feelings and desires drove her over the edge.

G'rett was roughly less than two hundred feet from the shoreline when he came to an abrupt halt. Slapping his hands against the surface of the lake in frustration, he turned to look at Kiyoni once again. He couldn't quite feel his feet touch bottom, but he was an avid enough swimmer to keep his head above water for a while.
"Please tell me Elliwodth is due to Rise any day soon," he pleaded with the Searchrider, his brown eyes looking directly into hers. "It's bad enough Demnoth barely beat Coth in Aylinth's Flight, and I had to do my best to avoid giving into the lust that remained." G'rett took in a couple of deep breaths and let them out slowly. "I know I'm only human, Kiyoni, but by Faranth's Golden shell...I'd much rather wish this was brought on by dragonlust more than an outright physical desire. You may or may not have heard that I've never been with a woman before. That much is true. But I don't want to lose myself like this. I can't. It's nothing against you, Kiyoni..." His voice trailed off. "I mean, you're pretty, but I feel like I'd be taking advantage of you unfairly. If Elliwodth were about to Rise, I won't feel quite as guilty. I'll level with you, though. One of the female Candidates has taken an interest in me, and you and I both know to have a relationship with her puts her at risk of not Standing. I honestly want to wait for her, but I did warn her between now and the time she graduates - provided she survives her weyrling training - Coth could give Chase to any female dragon he chooses. Including yours. Rumor has it Chandrath is about to Rise soon, and if I know Coth, he'll definitely give Chase. Which means if Coth Flies your Elliwodth...and then turns around and catches Chandrath..." He didn't have to finish the statement. He just didn't have to. Quindara would be extremely jealous of Kiyoni if Coth won Elliwodth's Flight, or even possibly Chandrath's...but on the other hand, G'rett long suspected Q'del's sister swung both ways. Not that he could ever think he could wind up in between two or more women, but there was always that possibility. Yet he wasn't sure how each woman would treat the other after the fact. G'rett supposed he could somehow make room in his heart to have more than one lover, but that would imply each woman in return would likewise have to get over the fact she'd be sharing the young Wingleader equally with the others.
Life was going to be very complicated if he didn't watch his step.

Kiyoni had been letting her mind drift and trying to think straight that she hadn't noticed G'rett stop to being with. She nearly plowed into him, but managed to stop herself before it was too late. Her eyes widened in surprise. Apparently she hadn't been the only one thinking those thoughts.
She glanced back at Elliwodth. "She is due to rise soon," she said quietly. "Maybe not for another sevenday or so, but very soon." Her green was odd. Sometimes she would rise before Kiyoni knew it. She wasn't sure if this would be one of those times or not. She smiled softly. "I did not know that about you, but that is good for you, G'rett," she said. "Not many can claim that and I'm not at all offended. I'm happy to hear it." She nodded a little. "That must be hard for you having to wait on the candidates. And if it makes you feel any better I kind of a thing going with Arktos, but it's not definite yet," she smiled. Kiyoni liked G'rett for his honesty. And she definitely didn't expect him to stay with her. "If your wonderful Coth does catch Elli I wouldn't expect you to stay. I know how flights work. Don't worry."
She hoped that helped put him at ease. She did like him, but she didn't want him to be uncomfortable.

Judging by the way Kiyoni had widened her eyes as soon as G'rett practically bore his soul to her, he knew she'd been thinking along the same lines as he. At least, that wasn't so bad. It let him know there had been at least one other woman in the weyr whom had an interest in him...
But by the same token, it could have a significant impact on his life. He just didn't know how much at the moment.
He had to smile warmly at the Searchrider when she told him she was proud of him for keeping his male virginity intact. That had often been a sticking point with the lads at Nova Hold while growing up. "You probably noticed the thin scars on my chest and stomach," G'rett explained. "I never took advantage of any of the girls while growing up at Nova Hold. The girls appreciated that, and paid more attention to me than the other lads. End result: the scars on my chest and stomach from all the fights I got into."
Kiyoni had then mentioned she and Arktos, the Candidate Master, were developing a blossoming relationship. "Arktos has been through much tragedy," G'rett said, inserting a bit of wistfulness into his voice. "I think it'll be good for him to learn how to start loving again, but we all know that we have little control over the results of any given Flight. Or Cloudlung, for that matter. My own father came down with cloudlung several turns back, but he managed to survive."
He breathed a sigh of relief when the Searchrider said she didn't expect him to stay, should Coth win Elliwodth's Flight. "Most women would find it hard, I suppose, for their lover not to remain with them after winning a Flight. I certainly know Lady Cybele was devoted to J'nel before his passing. Toniel, on the other hand, I've been watching carefully after Aylinth's Flight. She's been rather distant towards Q'del." G'rett kept hidden his own feelings towards the Weyrwoman's Second, but instead decided to soften his voice. "As for me, well...I know I shouldn't make promises I can't keep, Kiyoni. But should Coth Fly Elli before he does Chandrath, or any other female dragon...know that you'll always have a place in my heart as my first. Should you wind up bearing my child as a result, that child will also hold a place in my heart. It'll be a special reminder of the time I had with you, and I'd be honored to be that child's father. I sincerely hope things between you and Arktos do work out, however. I think you'd be good for him."
"No matter what happens, Kiyoni, I'll always remain as a close friend and confidant to you. You need someone to talk to, a shoulder to cry on...whatever...even if you need someone to hold you close throughout the night. Well, provided I haven't taken a weyrmate by then, but I think I can convince her otherwise." He blushed at the thought, and for a brief moment considered what just might happen. "I just want you to know I'll always be here for you until my very last breath."
G'rett reached down below the surface of the water to lift Kiyoni's hand up, and he kissed it before letting it go, his eyes never leaving the Searchrider's.

Kiyoni finally managed to get her face to return to normal and she smiled. At least neither seemed upset by what they had just told each other. She had been worried for a bit about what would happen.
The green rider's eyes widened. "That's awful!" She couldn't imagine why anyone would want to treat another person that way. "They had no right to do that to you. You have every right to wait for the right person."
She nodded in agreement. "He has been through a lot. And I think that's why we're trying to take things slow." Although she had to admit she was lonely. "Cloudlung I think effected all of us in a bad way. I lost my brother to it and it took a while to get the hurt to stop so much."
Kiyoni shrugged a little. "I'm a green rider. Elli rises a lot more then the golds and can be caught by any number of dragons. I've also been raised in a Weyr, so I'm used to the idea of having a different bed partner after each flight." She smiled up at him. Although so far G'rett had been the kindest and he hadn't even won Elliwodth's flights. "I must say, I wouldn't mind at all if your Coth won Ellie's next flight. And thank you, G'rett. It's nice to have a friend. Someone you can talk to." She blushed a little. "I hope your first time will be everything you hoped for," she whispered. Her first had been Elliwodth's first flight. Not her best idea, but it was what she had wanted. She smiled. "You're going to make someone a great mate," she said. "I hope your candidate Impresses."
The search rider actually giggled softly. Her face reddened just a tad. She had never been around someone quite so understanding.

G'rett simply shrugged, his movements not clearly visible below the lake's surface. "True, but that's not how most lads are. They think it's a matter of pride to lose their virginity early, and take advantage of any and every girl they lay eyes on. I wasn't quite like that." He blushed. "About the closest I've been was when I was invited over to the living quarters where three sisters lived. Their parents weren't home, and I sneaked out of my own parents' quarters late one evening. Nothing happened, though I wound up getting quite a show." That much was true; all G'rett ever got out of that night was a bunch of eye candy and good conversation.
He frowned when Kiyoni mentioned she lost a brother to cloudlung. "I was an only child myself. I'm sorry for your loss." He felt awkward, but wasn't sure what else to say regarding that particular topic. Still, he genuinely felt sorry for the Searchrider, and was a bit relieved he'd told her earlier that he'd be there for her.
"As for Coth catching Elli and winning his first Flight, there's always that possibility. The concept of winding up in someone else's bed is still a bit foreign me, since I was raised at Nova Hold. My mother and father stayed true to each other for many turns, and are still together to this day. Honestly, I'd rather have only one weyrmate and lover...but I suppose if Coth should Fly more than one female, I'd better get used to the idea of having more than one bed partner." He could feel his face redden somewhat and had to shake his head over it. From what he understood, having a weyrmate meant he'd more or less would be bound to one particular woman, and the only time he'd be excused for what amounted to adultery was if Coth wound up catching some other female dragon on her Flight. Though he sometimes wished he could stay true to that one woman...yet the idea of having him shared equally between two or three women as their lover still tickled his fancy. Especially if it just happened if said women all wanted to share his bed and moved into his weyr with him. It'd be a tight fit, but he had one of the larger weyrs that was given to senior-ranking Riders. He'd make room.
At least Kiyoni admitted she wouldn't mind having him in her bed after Coth Flew Elli, and there would be no serious problems that would result afterwards. She would remain close friends with him and vice versa. He smiled softly when Kiyoni whispered that she hoped G'rett's first time would be everything he hoped for. "Depends on the teacher," he winked at her. "I certainly wouldn't mind if that happened to be you. As for making someone a great weyrmate, well...I suppose I could. But you'll never believe who the Candidate in question is."
He paused a moment, then lowered his voice. "Quindara."

Kiyoni cocked her head to the side. "I guess I never thought about that before," she admitted. "I had a brother, but he ended up Impressing to a green dragon if that tells you anything," she said. Although she had known T'mil to have a good time with a few females as well. Apparently he had been one that hadn't been reserved about losing hsi virginity. She giggled a little. "I bet that was quite a show you got."
"Thanks," she said. "I miss him terribly, but I'm moving on. I know that's what he would have wanted," she said softly. She tried not to think about T'mil too much. It was still a raw hurt at times.
The search rider nodded sympathetically. "I can understand your feelings. I think it seems the hardest for ones who grew up in the Holds. I never knew my parents, so I never really knew what it was like to have just one partner. Although I think it would be nice." She knew though that it wouldn't be possible. Not if she continued to see Arktos like she wanted to. He didn't have a dragon, so everytime Elliwodth rose she would have a different bed partner. "If it makes you feel any better I never slept with anyone until Elli's first flight," she said with a slight smile. She was still proud of herself for making it that long. She watched his face for a second. At least they seeme to be on the same page.
Kiyoni grinned impishly. "Oh I think I've learned a thing or two from Elli's flight," she chuckled. And if Coth did happen to win Elliwodth's flight Kiyoni would make sure to go easy on him. She didn't want to scare him away from flights with his first one.
The young rider looked at him in surprise. "Quindara?" she repeated, but smiled. "I think I can actually see that one. I'm guessing she feels the same way from the way you were talking."

G'rett blushed. "Oh, it was. Some of the lads heard about it and teased me because I wouldn't sleep with the girls and have my way with them. I simply told the lads I wasn't quite ready to be a father at that early of an age. And as for your brother Impressing to a Green, I bet he had fun regardless of who he wound up with." He shrugged internally. He never had a problem with Riders who swung both ways, male or female. He himself just never had a desire to be with a male Rider who was bonded to a Green, often overriding Coth's desire to Chase. "I understand that you miss your brother and you're trying your best. But like I said before, Kiyoni, if you need someone to talk to or anything, come find me."
His eyes widened a bit in surprise when Kiyoni told him she'd never slept with anyone until her Green's maiden Flight...and the fact she gave him an impish grin after suggesting she learned a few things as a result. G'rett gulped visibly and had to blink his eyes a few times, then cleared his throat. "That's interesting," he said, his voice cracking slightly. Whoops. "I suppose we'll have to see what happens, then, if Elli Rises before Chandrath."
The Wingleader then nodded, and gave a sheepish smile when Kiyoni thought she could see why he'd make a good weyrmate for Quindara. "I only know what she told me, and she's not overly proud of her checkered past. I was willing to look past that, and you and I both know that not every Weyrling survives his or her training. Still, the fact remains I have to wait for her to graduate before I can do anything else. As much as I want to be with her physically, I don't want to risk her ability to Stand at the upcoming Hatching. But yes, Quindara wants to be with me as well. She isn't too happy about the idea of Coth winning other Flights and therefore having to share me with others, but that's life in the weyr for you. Being bound to a single lover is very difficult at best. At least it's somewhat easier if you're good friends with the person you wind up with as a result of a Flight."

Kiyoni shook her head. "I never could understand boys," she teased him. "I'm sure the girls appreciated you not taking advantage of them." The green rider smiled, through a thin film of tears. "Oh yes, T'mil enjoyed himself no matter who he was with." She nodded slightly. "Thank you, G'rett. I may take you up on that sometime. It's nice to just talk."
She studied him curiously. "Did I say something wrong?" she asked worriedly. She hadn't meant to offend him if she had. She shrugged a little. "One can never tell with dragons. I don't know when Chandrath is supposed to rise."
"I think we all have things in our pasts that we wish were different," "But I can see why Quindara would appreciate you being able to overlook them." The green rider looked down at the water. "Well, you can tell her she doesn't have to worry if Coth catches Elli. I wouldn't take you away from her. You both sound like you really care for each other. And it's nice to hear that you don't want to jeopardize her chances of Impressing. But if she does Impress sometimes a dragon will fly the same one continually so she may not have to worry."

G'rett had to restrain himself from outright smooching Kiyoni, so he settled instead for hugging the Searchrider. "Anytime, Kiyoni," he said warmly. He separated himself from her when she gave him a curious look, and he shook his head. "No, you didn't say anything wrong. It's just, well..." He blushed. "I know I said I wouldn't mind if the teacher was you, and I won't." He looked down into the water and could feel his face burn.
He had to look up again and watched as his friend looked down into the water herself, as if she were regretting something. G'rett gently lifted Kiyoni's chin so he could look her in her eyes. "You can tell her that yourself," he said softly. "I think she would much rather hear it coming from you. Perhaps the two of you can come to an agreement of sorts." A twinkle came to the Wingleader's eye as he let those very words escape his lips. "And I know that sometimes a male dragon will Fly the same female continually. But that doesn't always hold true. All I can really do as of now is to wait to see how Coth reacts, if he decides to Chase Elli. He may only Chase her once. He may choose to Chase her each time she Rises along with Quindara's dragon, once she matures." He shrugged. "We'll just have to wait and see."
