Randy was just starting to wake up, feeling her wher wake. She was reluctant to leave her mate, but she knew her and Ransk needed to get up and moving.
Ransk twitched a bit as she started to wake up. Randy's eyes widened when she caught sight of her wher. The red was instantly on her feet. Ransk?
The wher snorted. Come catch me if you can! the red called to the whers in the Weyr.
Randy was swamped by sudden emotions as Ransk ran out into the Bowl. The young wher handler hadn't gone through many Runs, but she at least knew what to expect.

V'zee stirred when Randael got out of bed. The bronzerider had always been a light sleeper and during his youth had often spent time napping in the stables, so light sleep came naturally in the form of feline naps whenever the need arose. "Be careful," he mumbled to his mate, finding Vikki to have moved into the warm place where the Handler had just been, curling up sleepily and soon snoring again.
Kyanath twitched on the ledge as the red wher of his rider's mate brushed past him, but the little bronze made no further move, having gotten used to the creature of the night in the last two turns with her random midnight feelings.
----------
Sanrev and Sanresk were just passing through the creche after their duties in the high isolation weyr on guard duty for the evening. One of the female Handlers was up there now. After watching the little ones dream in peace and letting the creche mother get a little bit of rest, the pair was now headed on one of their frequent meanderings about the Weyr Bowl and Rim, only to hear the cry of a female wher in heat.
Sanresk's awkwardly shaped head snapped about to zero in on the wher's call, finding the source streaking out of one of the ground level weyrs. No words were said between wher and Handler. The brown knew that he was allowed to run. Sanrev never held him back. The long dark brown bugled an answer to the glowing red as he sprung from the narrow ledge that led upward toward the Rim along the cliff face, small wings carrying him in an awkward glide to the Bowl floor before he darted after Ransk in slinking chase. Catch, Sanresk will! the brown called to her as his dark form closed in the vast distance between them to join the run.
Sanrev sighed and glanced at the weyr ledge that belonged to a certain Healer bluerider and a brief thought of seeing if she was awake crossed his mind. Either a swim or finally giving into another woman would make him feel better whether Sanresk won or lost.

Arktos lay in bed next his mate, taking a light nap now, partly just for the comfort of being next to his beloved. Arkysk was out on the ledge with Eliwodth, gazing out over the low lip of the Weyr Rim into the lands beyond. Suddenly, the lustful cry of another wher spli the still air. and the black jumped to his feet, standing with neck craned out, sniffing.
Arktos came more slowly to awareness and as his eyes finally opened he heard Arkysk in his head. Ransk Runs. I will Chase. You will stay here, yes?
It took a moment to remember that Ransk was the red wher. He blew a snort of air out of his nostrils. It was sharding inconvenient, but Arkysk deserved it. Go ahead. Win yourself a mate. The black waster no more time, he vaulted off their ledge and over the cliff, disappearing between to appear just above the floor of the Weyr Bowl where Ransk was. He would catch her, and win!
Arktos rolled over int the bed, running his hand along Kiyoni's side to wake her gently, He would need her there once the Run was over.
Tesni was woken from a fitful sleep by Ransk's cry. What's going on out there? she asked her blue.
One of the female whers is getting herself chased, it looks like. I thimk your friend Sanrev's wher is out there.
Feeling a pang of she wasn't sure what feeling, Tesni flung off the furs and padded out to the ledge in her sleeveless shirt and knee length cotton pants. She leaned against Kaitoth fir warmth and looked down into the Bowl. "Looks like your right," she murmured. "Wonder what happens if Sanresk loses..."

Ransk looked over her shoulder as Sanresk and Arkysk joined in. A black and a brown. Not bad. The red couldn't complain at all. She bugled another challenge as she took off across the Bowl, making short hops and glides, letting the males at least get semi close. Come on, boys! the red taunted. I run all night! Ransk wasn't her nurturing self at the moment. She wanted Arkysk and Sanresk to work for it.
Randy teetered on her heels as she watched. She glanced back into her weyr, wondering if V'zee was awake. She wanted to go to him, but she didn't dare leave her spot where she could watch Ransk. Hopefully Kyanath had heard and would wake V'zee.
Kiyoni shifted slightly when she felt Arktos move. It was still dark, so the young green rider definitely wasn't awake yet.
Elliwodth opened her eyes when Arkysk left. The green watched curiously. She had never seen a wher run, but she hoped that Arkysk won. She liked the black wher after all and wanted him to be happy.
"Hmm?" Kiyoni mumbled when Arktos touched her side. She opened her eyes half way.

After watching a few moments, Kyanath laid his head down on his forepaws and closed his multi-faceted eyes. Vik-Mine, Ransk mates. the soothing voice of the bronze entered his rider's sleep-fogged thoughts. V'zee opened his icy eyes after fussing over those words a moment. Then he was quick to sit up, waking Vikki in the process from moving the furs so quickly. The Wingleader glanced about the room then out to the ledge that his dragon shared with the wher and saw Randael out there. Knowing what would be coming soon, he woke himself more fully while he waited for the Run to end and his mate to come running for relief.
Sanresk bugled as he closed the gap between himself and Ransk just as Arkysk appeared to Chase. The dark brown paid the bigger wher no mind as he concentrated on the red ahead of him, reflecting her hops and glides in his own awkwardly long fashion. Sanresk Run all night, too! Ransk beautiful prize! he told her.
Movement on the ledge Sanrev had looked for made him smile. She was awake. Even if he just talked. Then again, he was not sure if he could keep his hands to himself until Sanresk's lust wore off. What if she was that sort of rider that did not sleep with anyone outside of a mating flight that was not their mate? The Handler had a dilemma on his hands as his brown faded in and out of the darkness in his Chase.
Neek decided to take things into his own claws and flitted away from his Pet to find his way to the mentioned ledge, crooning softly at the bluerider when he got there. Kaitoth's Pet keep Neek's Pet company after Run? he asked her in a flitter's images, hoping that he had been clear enough.

Arkysk snorted at Ransk's assertation even as he leaped after her, not spending himself too quickly. The wher knew instivtively that he was the stronger, it would be his job to outlast Sanresk. Not if I catch you before! he called to her, confident and joyous in brief bursts of flight mixed with a ground eating stride.
Arktos smiled inwardly at Arkysk's boldness as Kiyoni moved slightly against him. With the practice of Turns, he could keep the mating lust at bay, but that didn't mean he liked it. Now, his love was here, lying so close that they touched. When he spoke, his voice was rough around the edges.
"Ransk is Running. Arkysk is Chasing now," he said by way of explanation as he pulled her closer.
Meanwhile, Tesni was quite surprised to get the message from Neek. She turned several shades of red, though she was far from displeased. She'd found the wherhandler attractive ever since he'd been her patient a few months ago, but she'd never been sure how he felt. That he wanted to be with her now was a good sign. And hopefully something would grow from tonight that would be deeper than a temporary alliance. "Tell him I'd be glad to,"

Ransk seemed to laugh. The red wher was enjoying the two males attention. Although she was going to push them as far as they could go. She didn't want things to be too easy for them. We see, Sanresk, she teased. She glanced back at Arkysk. Try hard then. I go fast, the red assured the black. The wher suddenly veered to the right with a flick of her tail. She did a complete turn around and slipped between the two males. She wanted to see how good they were before she even thought of letting either of them catch her.
Randy teetered on her heels as her red's emotions hit her more. The handler was usually good at keeping Ransk's feelings at bay, but she didn't want to tonight. She had V'zee. Well, at least she hoped he was up. And for some reason, Ransk was really enjoying this Run. Randy closed her eyes and let herself get lost with her wher.
Kiyoni opened her eyes part way. She wasn't really effected by the whers, so she wasn't sure what was going on. She looked up at Arktos with a yawn. It was still early or late, depending how you looked at it.
"What?" the green rider asked in surprise. She had never thought about Arkysk ever chasing. She smiled and snuggled closer to her love. "So that's why you woke me up," she teased him, kissing his cheek.

Sanresk growled at Arkysk before Ransk made her turn and slipped between them. The tall long-bodied wher spun about quickly with a hop to right his dark body before dashing off after the red again. He would chase until he tired which, for the constantly moving about wher, usually took quite a while. Though Arkysk was bigger and probably stronger, the brown had no quarrel about challenging him for Ransk's affections.
Neek returned to his Pet with a cheerful chirp. He knew what his Pet needed. Red Tesni happy Neek's Pet company after red wher's run. A brief moment of firelizard invasion on the Handler's thoughts actually surprised him. Tesni wanted to keep him company after this? Perhaps she did feel the same toward him. It was a nice thought at such a moment. A very nice thought indeed.

Ransk ran between them and Arkysk growled, partly in response to Sanresk and partly out of annoyance. Being the largest wher ever to break shell had its advantages but maneuverability was not one of them. The black slid to a stop in the sandy gravel and whipped around as quickly as he was able, luckily not losing too much ground and breaking into a leaping run for a moment to catch up. Ransk's scent was everywhere upon the air and it drove the black to new levels of exertion.
Arktos let half his awareness travel with his wher, wincing slightly at Ransk's trick. But the part of his awareness that was still with himself demanded precedence. He chuckled low in his throat. "I didn't think you'd mind keeping me company," he said, returning her kiss as he ran his fingers through her hair.
Meanwhile, Tesni tried to watch the Run from the ledge, though it was next to impossible in the dark. Kaitoth wrapped a wing around her to keep her warm. You will enjoy yourself with Sanresk's then? You have been alone too long.
Tesni laughed. "Well I'll certainly enjoy myself tonight. As for the rest we'll just have to wait and see."

The red wher seemed to laugh as she watched the brown and black try to turn. She was impressed though. They were both larger, so the turn wouldn't be as easy. Ransk knew she couldn't keep it up much longer. Her Runs were never long, but she wanted to test them just a bit further. Catch if can! she taunted as she started to zig zag. She'd see how they handled that before she made her choice. She already had an idea though.
Randy gasped as she watched her wher's Run. Ransk never did the same thing twice and Randy never knew what to expect. She shuttered a little as she felt her red start to lean toward one of the two males.
Kiyoni smiled as she rolled over to face her mate better. "Mmm, no I don't mind at all," she whispered, closing her eyes as he played with her hair. She was glad that she could be there for him.

Sanresk slipped into the zig-zag with the red, keeping his long body low to the ground to allow for the quick changes in his direction. When she called her challenge again, he bugled and slinked out of the zig-zag into a straight forward run to try to close the distance more quickly, aware that the big black was nearby in the darkness. Catch Ransk, Sanresk will! he told her with another bugle of effort.
With Sanrev's nod and a smile, Neek flitted back to Tesni to give her an answer and question where his Pet was going afterward. Trilling a soft hello to his big Cousin, the bright blue spoke to Tesni again. Sanrev nod and smile. Where Sanrev go? Kaitoth's ledge or Sanresk's ledge? he asked of her.
Sensing that the Run had gone on long enough, V'zee got out of bed and headed for the ledge with a fur to keep his mate warm until her wher chose a victor. After that, instinct was going to kick in and he would only hope to please her as she did for him after Kyanath lost flights.

Seeing Ransk begin to run zig-zags, Arkysks snorted and leapt into the air where his larger wings gave him an advantage. They flapped hard to get him aloft and keep up with the forward momentum of his leap. The thickness of the night air helped, and he turned the leap into a stooping dive at breakneck speed, hitting the ground running barely a wing's length in front of Sanresk. He ran after Ransk, bugling in response to her cries of challenge, his great tail swinging side to side at every turn.
Arktos pulled Kiyoni against him, running his hands over her familiar curves and kissing her softly on the lips, letting their breaths mingle. "What would I ever do without you?" he murmured.
Tesni meanwhile was surprised to see Neek again. She gave the question some thought. "Tell him to come here, if that's all right," she finally decided. She didn't want to traverse the weyr in her pajamas.

Ransk looked back at them once again. She was impressed by how well they had caught up and they had both used different methods to close the distance. She liked that. And it appeared neither were ready to give up, but she knew who she wanted. Now to see if he got the hint. The red slowed her pace just a bit and swerved into Arkysk. If he was smart enough to grab her, then so be it.
Randy closed her eyes and trembled a bit. She knew the Run was almost over. She folded her arms and waited for the catch when she could run back to V'zee. She wanted her loved so badly at the moment.
Kiyoni moaned softly as Arktos ran his hands over her body. He may have woken her up, but she didn't mind at all. The young green rider leaned into his gentle kiss. "Aren't you glad you don't have to find out?" she whispered, snuggling closer to him. She'd help him through this.

Sanresk growled at Arkysk again as the black landed just in front of his muzzle. Of course he would take flight to catch the red easier. Sanresk was not much on flying, but he was fast at running. Yet size seemed to be the winner here as he saw the glowing red move into the black ahead of him. Still the dark brown kept up the Chase. There was always a chance that the female would suddenly change her mind...
Neek whistled an affirmative and disappeared again, finding his Pet where he had left him and trilled softly, landing on his Pet's shoulder. He would tell his Pet after the Run where to go. No need to tell him now. He would not go anywhere anyway.
V'zee stepped up behind his mate and gently placed the fur around her shoulders, moving to hold her against him as he watched the rest of the Run with her, dark, icy eyes managing to focus on the quickly moving whers in the Bowl.

Arkysk heard the change in Ransks's breathing that indicated she was slowing down just as the shimmering reds of his native thermal vision showed him about to crash into her. The black expected that this was another trick of hers, yet he could not let the opportunity pass, there might not be another. As she swerved into him, he unfurled his wings, using the near one to envelop the smaller red and hopefully pull her down into a controlled tumble that would end with him on top. There was none of the grace and beauty of a dragon mating flight in a wher's run, just speed and strength.
Arktos sucked in a breath in surprise, he couldn't believe it was over so quickly and that it appeared Arkysk had won. A new wave of desire seemed to crash over him and he moaned softly. It had been so long since he'd given his whole self to Arkysk this way, it was much different than the emotions of a Goldflight, perhaps less powerful, but much more personal and he found he did not have the voice to answer his weyrmate. He only pulled her against him, burying his face in her hair, surrounding himself with her smell as he waited for the outcome.
