From Weyrwoman Fiena's personal journal
Entry dated 6.19.3008, early morning
Can't sleep again. The Healers have told me there's not much time left until this sharding parasite comes out of my body. I suppose I really shouldn't talk that way about my son or daughter. Must be pre-Threadfall jitters, though I've been sitting them out for quite some time now.
Or maybe it's just general jitters. Months later I still don't think that Z'ika's death was entirely accidental. I keep replaying that scene over and over again in my mind, seeing Kalianath get struck, seeing him fall off her back...
But if someone was going to target the fertile greens - why now? Why not back when Revanth first started laying eggs, eight Turns ago? Why not after Kalianath's first clutch hatched a copper, an entirely new color that way too many people called unnatural? Why not when I first gave them all rank, making them goldrider equivalents?
I'm probably just being paranoid. Things are looking up for us. We've weathered Threadfall thus far, and we have Monaco Bay Weyr to support us. We have new gold blood in the form of a refugee from the North. I still can't believe those idiots exiled a gold, no matter how few eggs she was laying. And the copper - Avaleth - finally flew, proving Master Caol right in the end. He says she'll lay eggs soon. I wonder if they'll hold any more surprises for us. Somehow I doubt we've seen the last of these new dragons.
Jeseth's just told me that X'nair's mate has gone into labor. So my Weyrleader will be sitting this one out. I just hope D'lenor's up to the task of leading Fall. He's young, but he's done a good job so far. Suppose I ought to try to sleep, so I can greet my Weyr when they return from fighting Thread.
Entry dated 6.19.3008, afternoon
Something unspeakable has happened today.
My hands are shaking. I can barely write. I may have to give the order for something I never thought one dragonrider could even consider doing to another. What have we become? What have they forced us into becoming?
I'm afraid that now it will take a bona fide miracle to establish peaceful contact with the North. I hope I'm wrong. By Faranth's first egg, I do.
----
Golden Valley Weyr is an 11th Pass, play-by-email Weyr. AIVAS was never found and never will be. The weyr was isolated from the end of the 10th Pass, when resentment and pride lead the Northern Weyrs to cut contact, to just a few Turns before current play, when another Southern weyr made contact. Now both Southern Weyrs are isolated from the North - but not from each other.
This centuries-long isolation put evolutionary pressure on the dragons of Golden Valley, and the fertile greens and copper came about to make sure that there would be enough dragons to fight Thread. No one knows if this will continue, if the two fertile greens and the one copper will produce more of their kind, or if they are 'freaks' and their lines will die out.
We have open spots for browns, blues, and greens - bronzes will be considered on a case-by-case basis. We also welcome crafters of all kinds, including Master Crafters. With a copper clutch coming up, we especially need more Candidates!
