Physical description:
Alda is an imposing woman when you look at her, despite the fact she’s only about 5’5” in stature. She has steel grey hair streaked with lines of white, drawn tightly back from her face in an ever present bun at the back of her head. Sharp eyes go with – predominantly grey with light flecks of blue along with shapely eyebrows and what was once a very pretty face. She still has the high cheekbones and delicately angular face she once had, but it is now weathered with age and wrinkles have appeared. However, she only looks harsh if her expression is. Despite having flinty eyes her gaze can be soft and inviting, understanding too. Her small mouth is just as often smiling as it is pursed or a thin line. In fact, Alda can be remarkably expressive, but just as easily she can school her expression into that of unreadable indifference.
She’s not a plump elderly lady, in fact she’s quite lean. Her body has the general wear and tear that you’d expect to see and has lost the tone it had long ago, though that doesn’t mean she’s lost her strength. Just her figure. Commonly she can be seen in work befitting clothes that are always immaculate, and generally a pressed white apron is tied over the top. Stains are unheard of for this lady and she is always pristine wherever she goes.
Personality: Clean freak. Easiest way to describe Alda is a perfectionist clean freak. Everything must be spotless, all the time. Everything must be put away in its appropriate place and never left out. Everything must be ordered and stacked away properly. The last bit could perhaps be a touch of OCD but that's not how she'd put it. She’s also very strict, thus she makes an excellent headwoman. Nothing is out of place, everything is in order and everything gets done. There’s no shirking when Alda’s about, and you know that if she confronts you with her hands on her hips you’re in bother. She’s driven to say the least, and determined to get things done right and on time. Punctuality is nearly as important as pristine cleanliness.
Age has mellowed Alda and she no longer has such a fiery temper, though from time to time it will flare up a little. Get her riled and you’re going to be facing down a storm, and she’s devious. Annoy her too much, or cause some large insult and she will get back at you indirectly. Be it late food or other such things (The only time that anything is ever late), lower grade things (Only time anything is not of the highest standard), Alda will find a way to get back. And every time it is always just little annoying things, never anything upfront or direct or big. Unless of course all you need is a good dressing down. Underneath all of the sharpness though, she can be warm, comforting and very friendly, and her manners are always impeccable.
Alda has a photographic memory. She doesn’t forget anything and makes sure to commit people’s names to her memory every time she meets someone knew. Riders especially, and she will make sure to learn their name and that of their dragon as well. Recall can sometimes be ever so slightly delayed, but she won’t forget. Which can also work in your disadvantage. Luckily she’s not the type to bear large grudges.
History: Alda was the result of a Flight, as many children are and was raised in the crèche along with many other children. She didn’t know her parents very well, and whilst a little sore that this was the case she never minded too much. After all, she was hardly unique in this matter, and got on well enough with people. She grew up in Nova weyr and from the start had made sure that everything was clean and ordered – even when she was little in the crèche. She’d be the one that put away the toys at the end of the day.
She started off working in the crèche herself, but soon moved on to the kitchens. Throwing herself into the chores that could be done she established herself as a drudge and set her sights on the role of headwoman, determined that she could run the Weyr better than the current headwoman at the time. She was offered the chance to become a candidate, but she turned it down. Being a rider was all well and good but not for her. If she wanted this Weyr in good shape she’d be better off as the headwoman, seeing as she wouldn’t make Weyrwoman. So of course she grew and advanced in the ranks, until she achieved her ambition at the age of 36. That was one thing set aside, and the next goal was to get Nova up to her standards. Drudges were whipped into shape and everything suddenly became that little bit cleaner. She kept people in line with a firm but fair hand, and so wasn’t resented for being headwoman. Standards have never slipped since.
Craft Information: No craft, but ca cook, clean, sew and basically perform any task required of headwoman.
