Finally, out of quarantine! Velain had detested the infirmary. It was clean, that was the only good thing about the place. Besides that, it was boring, and he had to share the space with so many others. To make matters worse, most of his clothing had been taken and locked away. The Candidate Master had called it "superfluous." Velain was still fuming about that as he walked down the hall towards his assigned room.
He pushed open the door and gaped. "What the..." Velain gasped, putting a hand up to his mouth in horror. This was no room! This was a cubicle! How was he supposed to live here? "I demand an explanation about this!" he cried, turning around as if he expected the Weyrwoman herself to appear and tell him that there had been a mistake, he was actually assigned bronzerider quarters. No such help appeared. Velain pouted and put his hands on his hips, standing there and trying to adjust to the sight of the small room before him.

Sertex had been busily studying his notes when Velain came in. He didn't pay much attention to the other candidate to begin with until his exclamation. The teen quickly looked up. "Not what you were expecting?" he asked kindly.
Being in such tight quarters had been an adjustment to him as well. The only thing that had helped was he was used to spending the night in stalls if need be, but the barracks were still a lot different then he was used to and he had been separated from his twin.

Jaysen poked his head around one of the curtains that separated his space from the others when he heard the sudden outburst. The thin cloth gave him a bit of privacy, but otherwise he could still hear everything else that went on inside the barracks. "Ah, a new arrival," he said cheerfully. "Just get out of quarantine, did you?" He looked the other fellow up and down for a moment, as if studying him, then shrugged as he pushed the curtain aside and set down his own set of notes. Rising to his feet, he held out a hand to the newcomer. "I'm Jaysen, come from Azure Isle." No sooner than did he extend a hand did Misty suddenly appear from between on his shoulder, prompting the sailor to chuckle. The tiny queen studied the boy for a moment, her green eyes taking him in before chittering her own greeting. "Oh, and this is Misty," Jaysen explained.

Instead of the leadership, Velain only had the words of the other candidates to comfort him. He sighed and looked at Sertex, wondering what the boy was studying. Did candidates have homework to do? "No, it's not," he said sourly. "But then, nothing in the Weyr has been."
The other candidate who emerged from behind his curtain seemed entirely too cheerful, but if this candidate could be so happy with these living conditions, maybe Velain could adjust too. He took Jaysen's hand and shook it firmly. "I'm Velain, formerly of South Sands Weaver Hall," he said, smiling a little ruefully on the "formerly" part. It was hard to really consider himself weyrfolk this early in the game.
When the gold appeared, Velain practically turned green with envy. A fire-lizard, and a gold no less! "Hello, Misty," he said, reaching out to scratch her eye ridges. Then he hesitated, not sure if it was polite. "Mind if I pet her?" he asked, his hand still half-suspended in the air.

Sertex smiled in sympathy. "Trust me, it gets better," he said, putting his notes away. "It just takes a couple days to get used to things around here. I'm Sertex by the way," he introduced himself. "Originally from Crooked River."
Sertex looked over at Jaysen and Misty. He smiled at the other candidate, finally on good terms with the other teen. He chuckled as he watched Misty. He wouldn't be surprised if they soon saw Storm flitting around somewhere. "Hey Jaysen," he said cheerily.

Jaysen nodded, shaking Velain's hand. "Well met," he replied. "and no, I don't mind if you pet Misty. She would appreciate the attention." Right on cue, the queen firelizard trilled happily at Velain. "Though I admit I've never been to South Sands. Sounds, well, a bit on the dry side." He shrugged, then nodded at Sertex. "Hello, Sertex," Jaysen greeted, then turned back to Velain. "But he's right, it takes a couple of days to get used to how things are ran around here."
