Kiyoni had heard that Jaysen had been let out of quarantine and she wanted to make sure she apologized to him. She was feeling much better since her Search and her talk with Arktos that she felt she would be able to face the candidate now.
The search rider headed for the candidate barracks, hoping Arktos wouldn't mind her stopping by real quick to speak with Jaysen. She had tried to plan it around the lessons so she didn't disrupt them. Rivi chittered happily on her shoulder and looked around, wanting to play with the other firelizards. He knew which one they would see today and he was bouncing around in excitement.

Jaysen had been busy sweeping out the male side of the barracks since it was his turn in the rotation. Sweeping the broom this way and that, making sure he'd get the dust and dirt out of the corners and crevices; yet he understood the need to keep everything in tip-top shape. He'd been whistling a seafaring tune to help pass the time, and Misty was trilling her part of the melody perfectly.
It took him nearly half a candlemark to finish his chores, but as he swept out all of the dust and dirt, he looked up and out into the Commons Room. No one was in there at the moment, and he shrugged as he put away the broom. He was still whistling the same tune when he decided to head outside for some fresh air. As soon as he did, he caught sight of Kiyoni and Rivi. Misty broke off from her part of the song and crooned with delight, prompting Jaysen to grin. "Kiyoni," he greeted the Searchrider warmly. "I was hoping you'd come find me after I got out of quarantine."

Rivi trilled happily and fluttered his wings as soon as he saw Misty. The blue couldn't be happier to see one of his friends. There were so few of them anyhow.
Kiyoni chuckled at her blue's antics, but then turned to Jaysen. At least the young man didn't seem upset and it appeared that him and Misty survived the quarantine alright. "Hello, Jaysen," sh said. "Sorry I didn't stop by sooner. Do you have a few minutes?" She was a bit nervous about this. She still felt awful for forgetting to warn him about quarantine.

Jaysen nodded when Kiyoni asked him if he had some time. "Sure," he replied. "I'll always make time for my older sister. Is there anywhere specific you wanted to sit and talk?" He wasn't sure if she was allowed in the Candidate Barracks, given the disparity between their ranks. That, and he was still learning his way around the Weyr. Misty likewise trilled happily and rose from her pet's shoulder, fluttering around Rivi. She was always welcoming of company, and Rivi was no exception.
The young sailor looked at Kiyoni, and could tell she was as nervous as a raw recruit on his or her first seafaring trip. He shook his head. "I don't know why you're so edgy," he said. "There's really no reason to be like this."

The search rider smiled in relief when Jaysen said he had a few moments. Good, she had timed it right. She looked around thoughtfully. She didn't want to encroach on Arktos' generosity. Not that the barracks were off limits or anything. "How about the Dining Cavern? We could get some fruit juice while we're there too," she said.
Kiyoni sighed softly. She hadn't meant to be so nervous and jittery. Especially around Jaysen. He was like a brother to her and she had been missing T'mil terribly lately. "I know. I just feel awful that I messed up your Search so bad. I've never done that before," she said with a shake of her head. "I shouldn't have forgotten about quarantine."

Jaysen nodded when Kiyoni suggested they head to the Dining Caverns. "Wouldn't be a bad idea," he replied. "And I could always use something to drink." Misty halted in mid-flight and chittered at her pet. She wanted to come too! Beckoning at the tiny queen, Misty flittered back over to her pet's shoulder and landed neatly, her emerald eyes looking at Rivi and his pet. Jaysen afforded a glance at her, then looked back at Kiyoni.
"No one ever gets their course plotted accurately every time," he said gently when the Searchrider apologized. "Even I've made a few mistakes here and there." Jaysen gently squeezed Kiyoni's shoulder. "Come and humor your younger brother. Perhaps this sailor's advice may come in handy, and hopefully help you navigate out of these troubled waters you're in."

Kiyoni was glad that he didn't seem to mind the idea of the Dining Cavern. She knew any number of people could walk in there, but at least there they wouldn't have to worry about the other candidates. She smiled as Rivi returned to her shoulder. The little blue chittered happily and watched Misty.
The search rider sighed. "Perhaps," she agreed. "But I shouldn't have made that mistake." She nodded, liking the idea of talking to him. She hadn't known Jaysen long, but he did feel like a brother to her and that's what she needed right now. "I sure hope so," she said, leading him toward the Dining Cavern.

Jaysen grabbed two hardened but smooth stone cups full of fruit juice, then walked over to a table nearby. He sat down and placed one in front of him, then set the other in front of the seat opposite to him. While waiting for Kiyoni to be seated, he watched her body language carefully. He knew when she came to Azure Isle she'd been distracted, and now her mistake was eating away at her. "You shouldn't take it so hard on yourself, Kiyoni," he said. "Trust me, there were times when I nearly capsized my boat because I misjudged the waves. I wanted to kick myself for it, but my father told me sometimes they can be misleading. And the only thing worse than misjudging the waves is falling overboard and drowning. I would think, I would have to think, there are far worse things you can do other than blowing a Search." He looked into her eyes. "Kiyoni, you didn't fail with me. Believe me. Misty and I both pulled through. We've been in the doldrums more times than we'd like to admit. Being in quarantine was, well, slightly easier."
"But if that isn't what's troubling you, then what is it?"

Kiyoni quietly took the seat across from him. She cradled the mug in her hands as she tried to think of exactly what she wanted to say. She wasn't sure how much she should actually tell Jaysen considering she wasn't sure how much the candidate knew about Weyrlife and Flights. She managed a weak smile when he said they had survived. "I can see that," she said quietly. "And yes, there is worse things to do then that, but it still shouldn't have happened. I was too distracted."
The search rider sighed. "Do you know about dragons mating flights?" she asked softly. "They're kind of like the firelizards but much more powerful."

Jaysen took a long sip from his cup, then wiped off the red stain from his mouth with the back of his hand. He had to think for a moment or two about Kiyoni's question. He shot a glance at Misty, but the tiny queen gave him no hint, no inkling of what the Searchrider was talking about. Misty was barely two turns old, but never expressed a desire to mate with another firelizard. Perhaps she was too young still. Perhaps she would never have that desire. Jaysen wasn't sure either way, so the subject matter at hand was nearly foreign to him. Well, not quite as foreign. He'd spent some time in the Records Hall to read up on the material he'd missed since he was so far behind the rest of the Candidates, but quickly caught up. He read something about mating Flights, but didn't quite grasp the concept. He had to force himself to skip over the orientation class, as the idea of waking up to another man nearly made him lose the contents of his stomach.
"I read about them," he said truthfully. "But I wasn't in that particular class when the Candidate Master taught it. Was there a Flight that..." Again, he cursed his insight. Of course. It has to be that. Why else would she be so distraught? "Kiyoni," he said softly. "Was there a Flight that you were in recently?"

The search rider sat quietly. She could see by the look on his face that he wasn't totally sure what she was talking about. She glanced at Misty. Apparently the little gold hadn't given him the privilege of a flight yet. She had no doubt that he would learn first hand before long what she was talking about. Kiyoni sighed. Maybe she should just drop it. She didn't want to totally confuse the poor young man. She smiled slightly when he mentioned he had missed some of the classes but at least had read about them. Maybe she could still talk to him.
Kiyoni nodded slightly. "There was," she said quietly. Should I tell him anymore? How much is too much? "Elli rose just before I found you on Search," she tried to explain. "I was still thinking about that flight when I Searched you. That's why I messed it up so badly."

Jaysen blinked in surprise when his suspicions were confirmed. Just how bad was that Flight? His head started to throb, and he had to reach up and massage his temples. Misty crooned softly at her pet, worried that he wasn't feeling well. Offering the queen flit a soft smile and a reassuring rub of her head, he looked back at Kiyoni. For several long moments he didn't say anything. Finally, he found the words he wanted to say.
"I've read accounts were Flightlust makes you do things you normally wouldn't do," Jaysen said casually. "And it's usually the day after you either remember it fondly, or just as soon wished to forget it ever happened. At least, that's what I think I read." Shrugging, he took another sip of his fruit juice then swallowed. "You may think you didn't do well when you Searched me, Kiyoni, but I'd beg to differ. As for your thoughts about the Flight...the only thing I can really suggest to you is try to put it behind you, at least the stormy parts. Hold on to the times the seas were calm and gentle. You'll find it wasn't so bad after all, no matter what happened."

Kiyoni's face paled as she watched him. "Are you okay?" she asked worriedly. She hoped she hadn't gone too far. Maybe she should have just kept quiet. But oh how she had needed to talk. Even if Jaysen didn't understand everything she was saying. She smiled as she watched Misty. Rivi had finally settled onto her shoulder and was sleeping.
The search rider nodded. "That it does," she agreed. "Sometimes it's better when you don't remember what happened." She shuttered a little. She wished she didn't remember all of the flight. Although being with G'rett had been enjoyable. She smiled at Jaysen. "Thank you, Jaysen, for being so understanding about the Search. And I will try to put your council to use and forget about the flight." Well, she'd try even if it didn't work.

Jaysen polished off the rest of his juice, then nodded at Kiyoni. "Aye, I'll be fine. Just sometimes my head starts pounding as if the waves themselves were lashing against it." He shrugged. "And sometimes we wish we don't remember all of the details of an incident we'd just as soon like to forget, but that's never easy. I also know better than to pry into what happened with your Flight." He wondered just how bad it had been for his adoptive older sister. But Flights couldn't be all that bad, could they?
Still, he had to nod when Kiyoni thanked him for understanding. "Aye, it's what I try to do best. I may not be a salty old sea dog yet, but I'll get there one day." Jaysen gave her a teasing grin; he still used ocean analogies frequently and didn't think he'd ever get rid of them anytime soon.

Kiyoni cringed a little. "I'm sorry. Is there something I can do to help? Or have you mentioned to the Healers about your headaches?" She wasn't really sure if it was anything to worry about, but she didn't want to see Jaysen get sick or anything. She had taken a liking to the younger man and did view him as a brother. She smiled a little. "My flight just got a bit carried away," she said. "A couple things happened that don't usually happen during a flight. Maybe once you've learned a bit more about them I'll tell you. But not all flights were like this last one. Usually they are enjoyable for the ones involved." She didn't want him to start dreading flights when he Impressed.
The search rider giggled. "I don't think I can picture you as a salty old sea dog," she smiled. She had actually gotten used to his analogies and could figure them out pretty easily.
