The sands of time do not flow to one path.... what if they had turned another way? If Fax had killed F'lar and the Queen Egg had been Impressed by someone else, what would have happened to Pern?
This is the story of Nova Weyr, an alternate, loose canon, 10th Pass Weyr. The story begins as has been told. Fax kills F'lar in the duel, and Lessa does not recover from from the blow that the Lord Holder struck. Jaxom is a stillbirth. Another girl, Samara, Impresses the Queen Egg, and the dragon is called Blienth. Turns pass, Samara is not a bad Queenrider, though not as strong-willed as some would have liked. Hath flies Blienth, and R'gul remains Weyrleader. They do not prepare for the return of Thread.
Meanwhile, Fax has convinced the other Lord Holders to end the dragonriders once and for all, as they are parasites on Pern. He poisons the herdbeasts to drug the dragons and leads a raid on the weyr while he thinks all are alseep. But the weyrling dragons have not eaten the tainted herdbeasts, they are eating fish to save the weyr stores. So they hear the commotion and their dragons awaken to keen the death of the watchdragon.
As the battle erupts all around them, the Weyrwoman givers the weyrlings this message, Save the Eggs! So, 27 weyrlings escape to the Southern continent, each with an egg in a leather sack, including a Gold. After the battle, Fax is killed, and many dragons also, most having gone between when their riders are killed. Both Blienth and Hath are among the lost. Leaderless, some of the surviving riders go to the new weyr to help the weyrlings. It is deemed safer to let the eggs remain hidden there. Other riders remain at Benden. The eggs Hatch, most unharmed by their trip between. The Queen Impresses to Bronwen, she is named Valianth. The new Weyr is christened Nova.
Thread begins to Fall. In the South, the grubs have been partly successful. They stop the burrow from spreading, though plants touched by live Thread are still destroyed. The decision is made to only fly Fall in the area immediately surrounding the weyr. The North is decimated. The dragonriders ferry willing evacuees to the South, but most are left to their doom. Ten turns into the Pass, the North is declared lost and all are forbidden to travel there. By the end of the Pass, a Hold and a few Crafthalls are established, though many Weyr and Craft secrets remain lost forever. Population numbers, 1000 Holders, 500 Craft, 175 dragonpairs, 100 Weyrfolk.
The Interval is a time to rest and rebuild. Some go to the North to look for lost knowledge. Those who make it back report that no one is left living. Dragon numbers grow, though slowly, and by twenty turns before the tenth Pass, the weyr numbers 290 strong. Hopes are high that this Pass will be one for growth, and perhaps a new weyr will even be established. Some adovcate retaking Ista Island.
But it is not to be. A devastating disease sweeps through Pern. Cloudlung is the stuff of nightmares. Half the population is killed, including dragons and firelizards. The next ten turns are marked by despair. But the edpidemic begins to burn itself out and folk prepare for the Pass to being. It is now six months before the beginning of the Tenth Pass. The weyr has 150 dragons, and only one Queen. People still die of Cloudlung occasionally, so travel to the weyr is seerely restricted and the Healer Hall has never been so busy.
The past Turn has been a chaotic one. Clutches of firelizards have hatched that are...wrong. The flits are healthy, but they are not the right color. The Healers suspect that this is a adaptation to Cloudlung, since the odd-color ones appear resistant. Also, there are more large females than males born per clutch. No one knows if...or when it will begin to affect dragons, but if so, will it destabilize hundreds of Turns of weyr tradition?
The old Weyrleader, J'nel, dies unexpectedly from heart failure, and the Queen Chandrath is due to rise any day. Who will lead the Weyr into the new Pass? The junior Queen, Aylinth has clutched 21 Eggs which are hardening quickly and everyone wonders what the clutch may bring. Would you like to know? Then join the fight!
