Okay, so now that the thrill of the Hatching is over, we need to think about the future. I've had a new weyr-wide plot under my sleeve for some time now, and its about time to bring it to life.
The Weyr is going to have a Cloudlung epidemic! The first case will be Tesni's dragon Kaitoth, and here is the situation. First of all, note that humans cannot catch it from dragons, only from other humans, but dragons can catch it from dragons, as well as humans, whers and firelizards. There are several outcomes to catching Cloudlung:
being a silent carrier ( so you never get sick, but others can get it from you)
having the first stage and recovering (you may never know for sure if it was Cloudlung since there isn't a test)
dying from it, obviously
surviving stage two and becoming a chronic case- (you are no longer contagious, but have a chronic condition that makes it difficult to breathe and causes constant join pain, probably shortens your life as well)
also, a rider might not become sick, but their dragon might die.
Once the epidemic gets into full swing, the whole weyr will be affected. To ensure that no one chickens out of participating, here are the rules:
If you have more than two characters, and they're not all brand new weyrlings, at least one of your characters must be affected in one of these ways:
-they could die
-their dragon/wher could die
-they could survive, but be chronically ill
If you have a lot of characters, you probably want at least two, but I'm only requiring one. For the record, I'll be killing off one character in a long drawn out sort of way, and making Tesni dragonless. If you are really attached to all your characters, I wont mind terribly if you adopt someone only to kill them off, I just want everyone to participate. Ill be starting the plot for real tomorrow, but you'll have quite a while to decide who's getting the axe.
Now, the second order of business. First of all, a lot of people have been finding the method of time-keeping mildly confusing, and secondly, its quite slow isn't it? So, Ive been thinking of switching to a new method that will speed things up considerably as well as make it less confusing.
I'm thinking of going to a season type time-keeping, so that, instead of a month, we'll be in a season, which is approximately 3 IC months long. It will still last approximately a month RL, or as long as it takes to get things wrapped up for the season, but this means that everything will go about three times faster, so that the sr. weyrlings (from last hatching) will start mating flights for greens in march and Artemth will have her mating flight in april or may, with the clutching and hatching to follow in june. The weyrlings should graduate in about july or august.
The consequences for this are that hatchings will happen more frequently, but the clutches will necessarily have to be smaller, but weyrlings will graduate faster, and only a third of weyrling classes will be played. Also, babies who are conceived could actually be born in three months RL time. We'll still use the same dating system for posts, this is just to keep track of what happens when.
If most people are in favor of the system, I'll start it right after the Hatching feast gets underway, meaning that the next weyrling lesson for older weyrlings will be mounted flight. Yay! Just offer your opinion by replying to this thread.
Thanks a bunch,
Kit
