Kiyoni sighed. She had put this off long enough. She lay a hand on her stomach and frown slightly. She was starting to show a bit and she wondered how many people had noticed. The search rider pulled on a loose tunic and pants before slipping out of her weyr. Arktos was out with the candidates and Kiyoni had someone that she needed to talk to.
She headed for a certain bronze rider's weyr, hoping he was in. She could have gotten Elliwodth to bespeak his bronze, but she really didn't want to get her dragon involved. Although she did regret putting this meeting off for so long. She had stopped to check on him once he had returned from being held prisoner, but she hadn't told him her secret. Now she needed to.
Kiyoni stopped outside his door and knocked. She waited patiently with Rivi sitting quietly on her shoulder. For once the little blue was actually being quiet and well behaved.

G'rett looked up from his desk when he heard someone knock on the door. Coth lifted his head from his forepaws and looked in that direction, his eyes were a steady green, suggesting curiosity. Are you expecting anyone, G'rett? the Bronze asked his bonded, now turning to look at the human. G'rett shook his head, setting his shoulder-length hair to swaying. "Not really, no. At least, not at this particular candlemark." But his curiosity demanded satisfaction, so the Wingleader eased his chair back just enough for him to stand up. He headed to the door and opened it, and he was taken back at his guest.
It was Kiyoni, and if anything she looked worried; at least, that's how she appeared to him. Her blue firelizard wasn't making any noise, either, which only added to the man's puzzlement. "Kiyoni, are you alright? Please, come in; you seem troubled." G'rett gestured for his friend to enter into his quarters, waving his hand at the couch.

Kiyoni was trying not to fidget as she waited for G'rett to hopefully open the door. She knew it was an odd candlemark, but she had to talk to him before she lost her nerve. He deserved to know the truth. Rivi chittered softly in hopeful comfort. He didn't like how confused his Pet seemed.
The search rider looked up when G'rett finally opened the door. She gave him a tired smile as she stepped into his weyr. "Thank you. Could I talk to you?" she asked, moving over to the offered couch. She carefully sat down, wrapping her arms around her stomach. Rivie curled around her neck and looked up at G'rett. "I am a bit troubled," she answered, trying to pick her words carefully.

G'rett walked behind Kiyoni, noticing just how badly his friend tried not to fidget in his presence and once she settled down on the couch, the man's eyebrows knotted in concern when the Searchrider said she was troubled. Based on the way she wrapped her arms around her stomach, either she wasn't feeling well, or...
"Are you well? What's wrong?" G'rett asked, lightening the tone in his voice as he sat down next to her. Coth, too, looked at Kiyoni, his emerald gaze now fixed upon the woman. "Have you seen the Healers?" The Wingleader tried to look into the brunette's eyes, wanting to know if there was anything he could do to help. If Kiyoni needed to see the Healers, he'd be willing to escort her to the Infirmary.

The search rider looked down at her hands. She knew she wasn't acting like herself. She was just worried about how he was going to take this news. She knew he had told her he'd always be there, but she had never dreamed that she would have to take him up on it. And to be honest, she was still a bit scared. This was all new to her and she didn't know the first thing about having a baby.
Kiyoni shook her head, her hair falling into her face. "I have already seen the Healers," she whispered, looking up at him. "That is what I need to tell you, G'rett," she said uncertainly. She hesitated briefly. "I'm pregnant," she finally blurted out, looking back down.

G'rett sat back, his jaw slightly agape when Kiyoni said those two little words that sounded so minute yet expressed so much. I'm pregnant. Coth, too, seemed to be taken back by this sudden news; the Bronze looking at his bonded then back at the Searchrider. He seemed to study her for a moment, then turned to look at G'rett. Elliwodth's speaks the truth, G'rett. She is with child. The Wingleader turned to look over his shoulder at his dragon, then turned back to look at Kiyoni again.
His facial expression turned from surprise to a quiet contemplation, one arm now across his ribcage while his right forefinger and thumb were rubbing his bearded chin. G'rett tried to think exactly when this would have happened, then it came to him. The Flight. It had to have been Elliwodth's Flight, the one he shared with Kiyoni and Quindara. It was mostly a blur, really, except for when the trio finally were conscious of the fact they all shared the same bed. G'rett had been rightfully worried that somehow he had impregnated both women, and as a result Quindara would be ineligible to Stand. Fortunately, she wasn't, and managed to Impress to Artemth, the first and only Silver dragon in the entire Weyr.
Kiyoni was, to use a phrase often quoted by B'ren, a "wild card." G'rett knew Arktos had also been with Kiyoni, which led to a discussion between the Candidate Master and the Wingleader. It wasn't known if the Searchrider had actually conceived, but if she did and neither of them knew who the father was, Arktos had said he would raise the child as if it were his own. That was fine with G'rett, but should the child actually prove to be his, he had asked the boy or girl would be made aware of his or her true paternity.
G'rett leaned over, unfolding his arms and gently lifted Kiyoni by the chin so he could look into her eyes. "There is nothing to be ashamed of, Kiyoni. In fact, you should be happy." He spoke softly, and kept a soft smile on his lips. "I don't know if you've spoken with Arktos, but I think you should tell him as well." G'rett leaned over and gently caressed Kiyoni's cheek with his lips. "I may not be your wingleader, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to refrain from any flight activity until after the baby gets here. Of course, it's ultimately up to you; but you know me, I'd rather give a child a chance at life, regardless of if I'm the father or not."

Tears slid down Kiyoni's cheeks as she waited for G'rett's reaction. She didn't know if he would happy or angry. She knew Arktos was happy at least. Although she was still scared. She had never had a family and really didn't know much about children. Would she really be able to handle this? And just who was the father? Kiyoni sill had no idea of the answer to that question. She didn't know if she would ever know that answer. She glanced over at Coth. Could the bronze tell that she was pregnant? Not many could yet unless she wore a tighter shirt, but she had chosen a loose shirt. Why, she didn't know. G'rett had a right to know after all.
The search rider slowly looked up when he touched her chin. Her blue eyes were sparkling with unshed tears as she kept her arms protectively around her stomach and unborn child. "Arktos knows," she whispered. "He was there when I found out. I passed out in the Bowl and scared Elli." That had been a scary day the whole way around. Kiyoni nodded slightly. She hadn't been doing a lot of flying except for the occasional Search. "I don't know if I'm happy or not. Right now I'm scared and confused," she whispered. "It didn't seem real until I realized just a couple days ago that I was starting to show." Being thin didn't help. There wasn't really any way to hide it then.

G'rett nodded slowly when Kiyoni told him of how she had passed out in the Bowl and scared her Green, of how Arktos already knew about the pregnancy and of her uncertainty of how she should act. G'rett simply enfolded his friend into a warm embrace. "I understand that you're not sure of what to do," he said. "But I did promise you I'd be here for you, and I'm not going back on my word." He leaned back a little so he could look at her. "Do you have a rough idea of how far along you are?"
He really wasn't sure how he could help his friend during this stage of her life, but he'd be betweened if he sat by and did absolutely nothing. G'rett sighed, wondering what he could do - if anything.

Kiyoni tried to stop the tears that were threatening to fall, but it was no use. They continued to come. She had never felt so scared and confused in her life. What if she couldn't handle this? What if she was a terrible mother? Or she lost the baby? She shuttered at that thought. She would have to be careful with how much she did. Tess had already warned her that she needed to take it easy. Having contractions at two months wasn't good.
She snuggled close to him and cried softly. She knew it probably wasn't good for the baby or herself, but she just couldn't stop. "I know you did," Kiyoni whispered, looking up at him, her blue eyes a bit faded. "I'm about three and half almost four months along," she whispered, laying her head against his shoulder.

G'rett simply nodded when Kiyoni told him how far along she was. That meant she was about a third of the way through her pregnancy, but not quite to her halfway point. "I can talk to T'gan if you want," he said softly. "Probably wouldn't hurt if you were to take it easy until the baby gets here. I know I'd be asking the same thing of you, but then again," he shrugged. "I'm not your wingleader. Tess would have the final say on how long you'll be on the inactive list, and I'm sure the Weyrwoman would fully support that decision."
He gently wiped the tears from her cheeks with a thumb. "You'll make a good mother, Kiyoni. I just know you will." G'rett gave her a soft, reassuring smile.

Kiyoni had already started to have some of the morning sickness and she hated it. Although hopefully that meant the baby was still healthy. After her initial scare she just didn't know. She almost felt paranoid. But somehow Arktos had kept her grounded for the most part. She shook her head. "I'll talk to him," she whispered. Kiyoni looked down. "I haven't told you everything," she admitted. "I had early contractions. That's how I found out I was pregnant. Tess still isn't sure what caused them, but she told me I needed to rest and relax." That hadn't been the easiest thing to do. She was worried sick even though Arktos had been thrilled.
The young search rider looked scared as he gently touched her cheek. "I don't know," she whispered. "I don't know the first thing about being a mother."

G'rett considered Kiyoni's words as she explained. He was no Healer, but for Kiyoni to experience contractions early in her pregnancy didn't sound good. For Tess to tell his friend to rest and relax was probably best for her - and hopefully T'gan would also approve of that decision. Technically, G'rett did outrank T'gan, but in most cases opted to let the Wingsecond handle the day-to-day responsibilities that belonged to him. It meant the Wingleader of Stardust knew better than to get involved. For now.
"I'd go with what Tess said," G'rett said thoughtfully. "Although you might want to avoid going between for any prolonged length of time. Probably would be best if you didn't altogether. As for seeking the advice of one who's a mother," he shrugged. "The most qualified person I can think of would be the Weyrwoman herself."

She was still scared stiff that she could lose the baby. Why hadn't Tess been able to figure out what was causing the contractions? Had it been something she had done? Maybe she had been too stressed. The green rider sighed softly. Arktos had definitely tried his hardest to make sure she didn't get over stressed and she was grateful for that. But she wasn't ready to be totally bed ridden. Not when she still had months to go. And she really did need to talk to her Wingleader. Why she hadn't done that already she didn't know.
Kiyoni looked up at G'rett. "I just don't understand why I had such problems to begin with." She sighed. "You're probably right, but I don't want to stop all together. I love going on Searches and surely that isn't too strenuous." Or at least not normally. Her face paled. "I wouldn't want to bother the Weyrwoman over something like this. She is so busy anyhow."
