G'fal gathered up his hides and left them on his desk. He then headed out to the Bowl to wait for the weyrlings and his assistant to arrive. Today would be an interesting day. The dragonets would get to hunt of themselves for the first time. Some seemed to catch on fast while others didn't. And sometimes their riders didn't handle the new experience well.
Treoth was already laying by the beast pens waiting for his rider. The brown was an old pro at this and would help if need be. They will do fine. They are dragons. This is natural, the brown said to calm his rider down.
The Weyrling Master chuckled softly. Thanks old friend. I needed that.
Treoth just snorted. G'fal walked over and leaned against his brown's shoulder. Now all there was to do was wait for everyone. Until then, he'd just spend some time with his beloved brown.

LESSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNN! the multi-hued green cried gleefully into F'har's mind. It's time for a lesson, F'har! she repeated. The weyrling was clutching his ears, even though his external hearing had nothing to do with the overly loud volume of his growing dragon. His arm had healed by now, thankfully, so he was able to do more with her, but she was still almost more than he could handle. The young dragonet was racing out of the barracks almost before F'har could assess her words and he was left stumbling after her.
Irisith! You are going too fast! he yelled mentally, but she slowed only marginally. The green pair was first to arrive and this delighted her to no end. See, F'har? Now we will be first in line for the lesson! I wonder what we'll do today, hmm? "Um, hello, Weyrlingmaster," F'har said, a little embarrassed by his dragon's overexuberance.
Lyrensa had a bit more luck with slowing down her own dragonet, but this was largely due to her increasingly pregnant state and Brigith's thoughtfulness. The gray may have been leading Lyrensa out of the barracks, but she would stop frequently and look back at her rider to be sure she was close behind. I'm fine, Brigith. I'm only four months along, after all. Not nearly enough to hinder me. Still, the gray was concerned for her rider's well-being and kept glancing back.
The short walk to the bowl seemed to be made even longer by this halting progress, but Lyrensa was truly touched that her dragon, unlike some of them, was so concerned for her. She could feel Brigith's hunger almost as if it were her own and she hoped the lesson would release early so she could feed the growing gray. "Hello Weyrlingmaster, F'har," she said, dipping her head cordially to both. Greetings Treoth. What shall you be teaching us today? Irisith, your hide looks lovely today. The green preened and turned to her rider, undoubtedly to chitter some excited words to the young lad.

J'sen whistled a seafaring tune as he got ready for the Weyrling lesson, and Amonth seemed to sway his head in time to the melody. I like that tune, Mine. Something your sire taught you? J'sen simply nodded as he found a tunic and pulled it over his head, smoothing the fabric in place. He had just finished washing up after a rather grueling rowing exercise on the water, and barely got his breeches on when the summons came to attend the Weyrling lesson. Tugging his boots over his feet, J'sen stood and nodded to Amonth and Misty. "Let's go, you two. Can't keep Calyssa, Freyath, and Storm waiting on us, and we don't want to be late for the lesson."
The trio made their way out of the boys' side of the Weyrling barracks, and J'sen merely folded his arms across his chest and leaned against the wall, facing the entrance to the girls' side. Amonth simply sat on his rear haunches, his tail flicking about this way and that, while Misty perched herself on her pet's shoulder. Together, they waited.

Belenoth was literally bouncing around the barracks. His tail whipped out behind him as S'tex tried to dodge him long enough to pull on his boots. Come on! the bronze cried. I want to go! More lessons! More learning!
S'tex shook his head with a chuckle as he finally managed to get his boot on. Alright, I'm coming.
Belenoth charged out of the barracks. S'tex had to run to keep up with him. He wasn't able to even think about anyone being around until they finally reached the Bowl. He smiled to his other classmates. "Hello Weyrling Master." Belenoth pranced in place beside him.
"Hello," G'fal answered all three as they got there pretty close to each other.
You will learn how to hunt for yourselves today young one, Treoth answered Brigith.
~~~
Storm sat perched on Freyath's head while Calsysa quickly pulled her long hair up. She wasn't sure what today's lesson would be, but she was looking forward to it. She had enjoyed her lessons. Except of course where S'tex had gotten hurt, but that had only been once.
Calyssa Mine, may we go now? I do not want to be late, the dainty red asked of her rider.
Of course, love.
Storm flitted to Calyssa's shoulder. Calyssa walked out of the barracks with Freyath right beside her. Storm chittered excitedly as soon as he saw Misty. Calyssa looked up. "J'sen!" she said happily.
Good day, Amonth, Freyath said, stepping up beside the bronze. Would you and Yours like accompany us?
N'huel awoke to a weight on his chest. To many, this would have been alarming, but the weyrling was quite used to it. He pushed futilely at the bulk that was his dragon. "Soon you'll be to big to get into the bed Inarith." The white was the smallest of the clutch by far, but he was still longer than N'huel was tall by now, and his head was shoulder height when he drew himself up fully.
I guess you'll have to get a bigger bed then. the white replied cheerfully, but he slid off the cot gracefully, only rocking it slightly. Its time for lessons, Treoth said we were to go straight there today, not eat first.
N'huel grunted assent, as he climbed out of bed and pulled a clean white tunic out of the chest, then thought better of it. He pulled a black one out instead. If, as he figured, the dragonets would be learning to hunt, it was sure to be a bit messy.
After rinsing his face with cold water from the basin and running his fingers through his wild black hair, he and Inarith made their way to the Bowl. The white ran up to greet his clutchmates excitedly, but N'huel hung back as usual, content to observe. Though he felt himself wonderinf if Kikaya and her gray would be here today. It was nice to have at least one person to talk to.
Artemth and Quindara woke at almost the same moment, something that happened nearly every morning. Both stretched like felines and yawned mightly. We are to go straight to lessons today, Treoth says. But I am hungry. There was a slight hint of reproach in the tone of the silver dragon.
"Well, you're getting big now. Perhaps its time for you to hunt on your own." Quindara replied as she swiftly rebraided her long hair. Aretemth sat up at that clearly surprised but pleased by thought.
Oh, well in that case, I will do my best. Artemth replied with an arch of her long neck. Quindara laughed.
"No doubt you'll be the swiftest anaceful at your butchering, you vain creature." With a fond pat, the two walked out into the Bowl and Quindara smiled at all the other weyrlings. She couldn't believe that so much time had passed since the dragonets had Hatched. And soon there would be 28 more weyrlings, if all went well. The Barracks would be quite crowded.
****
Cernuoth, as usual, waited patiently for his rider to wake, sitting on his stone couch still as a statue with his front legs crossed. K'von's firelizards were not so courteous however, Nereus and Cinaed were squawking angrily at each other over something and Araceli was hiding under the cover, cheeping fearfully. K'von sat up and separated the two male flits, giving them a stern talking to, which meant they'd both be off sulking the rest of the day. Then he coaxed the little green out from under the covers before turning his attention to his very tolerant dragon.
I believe we will be learning to hunt today. the brown said calmly as K'von pulled a clean but rumpled tunic over his head.
"Oh, what makes you think that?" the weyrling replied, muffled by fabric.
Treoth told us not to eat before lessons. It should be exciting.
K'von thumped his brown on the shoulder fondly. "I think you'll be good at it. And I'll be glad to not have to cut up meat for you any longer." With that, the two of them walked out into the Bowl, making their way unerringly to F'har and Irisith. "Morning F'har," K'von said, greeting his brother with a grin. "Irisith is looking well." The little green always looked so full of life, he bet she'd have the males after her in a few months. Not for the first time, he wondered what F'har thought of that. K'von was looking forward to Cernuoth chasing, as long as it wasn't Irisith, or preferably, any of the other females with male riders.
M'thos and Sylvanuth followed soon after, the young harper smiling at his friends as his blue skipped ahead happily. Mornin' Irisith and Cernuoth. I wonder what we're doing today. Wish we could've eaten first.
K'von grinned. "Cernuoth thinks it'll be the first hunt today. I sure hope so. I thought I'd have to start slicing up a whole herdbest for him soon.:
M'thos grimaced. "I won't mind not having to touch raw meat anymore but I'm not looking forward to seeing Sylvanuth tear up some poor beast either."
Kikikaa and Peronith were among the first to show up at the beast pens. G’fal allotted a fair bit of time for the Weyrlings to get there which made things much easier for the first Lessons of the mornings. Peronith settled her large, cloudy-colored self nearby Treoth and set about preening at her wings while she waited for the Littles to show up for their Lesson. Of course, this Lesson would only include the Nova born dragonets since the Rogue Weyr’s dragons were all old enough to hunt themselves. Kikikaa smiled at the WeyrlingMaster as she took up a place between him and her dragon, firelizards flitting about high above in their own playful ways, both already with full bellies from their own breakfasts. “Good morning, G’fal. Nice weather for their first hunt, huh?” she said to the brownriding WeyrlingMaster.
Kyler woke that morning like she usually did with a hunger in her stomach that she could do without. Surely her young green would soon learn to temper her hunger just a little bit or so she hoped for that. But that was only one minor discomfort she had to deal with. Soon, her lovely Nyxith would be old enough to hunt on her own and it would make morning chores so much easier. As soon as she was aware that she was awake, she heard the soothing voice of her lifemate before she had even opened her eyes to see her. Let’s go, Kyler-Mine. I am hungry and our Lesson today is earlier than usual. Mine, what does Treoth’s have planned for us today?
That’s what it was. It was too early for a Lesson. Nonetheless, Kyler rolled herself ungracefully out of bed, dumping Sunil on the floor amid the blanket they had both been under. “I’m up, Nyxith. I’m up.” She was still too sleepy to realize just why their Lesson could be so early compared to usual and she stumbled to get dressed as Nyxith helped a squawking little blue out of the blanket. Silly, Cousin. Sunil chittered a thank you to the green as he found his feet and hopped back up to the bed, curling up on his Pet’s pillow with a yawn and watching her move about sleepily. It wasn’t until Kyler walked out of the room that the blue flitted hurriedly after her. “Let’s go, you two,” she said as she led them outside, spying the large green of the Assistant’s dragon and the brown of the WeyrlingMaster’s dragon near the beat pens. The beast pens? Nyxith’s belly growled as she eyed up the herdbeasts beyond the two adult dragons.
C’nell woke with the usual feeling that he was being watched. He opened his eyes to stare directly into the slowly whirling eyes of his young blue. He was slowly getting used to it to the point that he was not jumping out of his skin every time he woke up. Yawning and then realizing that he felt hungry, the Weyrling got up, tossing his blanket to the foot of the bed and reaching over to sleepily pat his blue’s head while rubbing sleep from his eyes. “I wouldn’t trade you for the world,” he told the watery-shaded blue before getting up and shrugging into a crumpled up shirt and a pair of pants. “Let’s go eat,” he said, pulling on his boots and not bothering to tie them just yet. He was not awake enough for that.
Manwydath bobbed his head with a happy croon for his lifemate and followed the young lad out of the Barracks. Once outside, he stopped and looked at his rider a moment. You’re boots will trip you, Mine, he stated matter-of-factly. And we’re not eating first. Treoth’s said to go straight to him for our first Lesson, he added calmly.
C’nell stopped and looked at his boots. With another huge yawn, he crouched down to tie his laces before standing up and starting onward again. “You’re not eating first?” he questioned, looking at his blue as he walked in the direction the muscled dragonet steered him.
Treoth says no. We meet him over there. Isn’t that the beast pens where the older dragons eat? he answered with a nudge to C’nell’s elbow. C’nell looked up and at about the same moment that it dawned on himself, his blue had figured out what the Lesson was today. I get to catch my own food! Manwydath said cheerily, a bounce beginning to show in his step as they reached the others.
G'fal smiled at Kikikaa. He had to admit, it was nice to have a female assistant. He had a feeling questions were going to start coming up that the female weyrlings would rather talk to Kikikaa about then himself. Which was fine. That's why he had an assistant. And he was glad to see that she was right on time. He enjoyed working with the younger green rider. She always seemed happy and upbeat. He watched as the weyrlings started to make their way down. Some seemed to have figured out what was going on. Others still seemed lost. "Good morning, Kikikaa. Yes, it is a beautiful day. I just hope all goes well."
Treoth yawned and lay his head on his great paws. Good morning Peronith, the brown said cheerily. He liked watching the young ones learn new things.
Belenoth was still prancing happily as they made their way to the beast pens. He was hungry, but that wasn't bothering him yet. What do you think we'll learn? he asked, bouncing around S'tex.
S'tex rolled his eyes with a laugh. We'll have to wait and see, the young bronze weyrling said. Although he had a feeling he knew as they headed for the beast pens. He glanced around for Cheriss, wondering if her and her brother would there yet. He enjoyed talking to the red weyrling.
Storm chittered happily to Misty. The bronze could always be found with Misty if he wasn't with Calyssa. Calyssa smiled at J'sen. "Thank you for waiting for me," she said cheerily.
Freyath looked over at Amonth. Come. It would not be proper for a lady to be late, she said.
G'fal looked around at the weyrlings, making sure that they were all there. He didn't want to start until they were all gathered. Once he was sure they were he nodded and glanced at Kikikka. "Alright all. I'm sure you're wondering why I had Treoth tell you all to come straight here. Now, I know all your dragonets are hungry right now, so today's lesson will be teaching your young ones how to hunt on their own. That way you don't have to continue feeding them bu hand." He looked over at Kikikaa. "Kikikaa would you and Peronith like to show them the easiest way to hunt? I know she's a bit smaller then Treoth." They had already talked about this and figured it would be the easiest.
Calyssa gasped. Hunting on their own? Oh she couldn't believe their dragonets were old enough for that already. She beamed over at J'sen as Storm chittered happily. Freyath sat primly beside her and waited.
Belenoth on the other hand was ready to go When can I try? the bronze demanded, his tail twitching.
As soon as they tell us you can, S'tex said, putting a hand on his bronze's head. Belenoth settled just a bit.
"It's instinct. They'll all get it easily. It's just a question of how messy they're gonna be," Kikikaa said cheerily, looking up at her big green. Peronith had been very hesitant about getting dirty when they had done this Lesson turns before, but after she realized that freshly killed meat was better than the hand fed meat, she did not care about being messy at all.
Peronith looked at Treoth before responding to his greeting. A good morning it is! she said to the brown before G'fal began the Lesson.
Kyler smiled sleepily. Finally, Nyxith was old enough to hunt on her own. How wonderful that was. Nyxith crooned. I get to pick which one I want? she asked her lifemate, already figuring her answer out. There was a nice one that would do if they were picking from the ones she saw. Sunil landed on his Pet's shoulder and watched the goings on, getting a vibe that they were going hunting from Kyler and preparing himself to help.
Manwydath bugled happily after G'fal spoke of the Lesson for the morning. Which one should I pick, Mine? This would turn out to be great fun for the young blue. C'nell chuckled at the unusual feeling of giddiness from his dragonet. Let's watch Peronith first, then we'll pick, he said, wanting to see the older dragon demonstrate what to do first.
Kikikaa nodded with a smile, stepping away from her big green so that Peronith could demonstrate the easiest way to catch one's meal. After all, she still liked being neat about it. The cloudy-colored green spread her long wings to prep herself for the quick flight to the pens while she waited for the okay from Hers. Kikikaa smiled at the Weyrlings and quickly informed them of a few things. "Now your dragonets will probably get pretty messy doing this, but as they grow they will find their own ways to catch their meals. Peronith likes to be neat about it, so her catches are usually quite clean. Don't expect all of your dragonets to be clean like she's going to be." Looking at her green, she mindspoke to her lifemate, Go ahead, Love.
Peronith moved toward the pens, far enough away that she would not scare the beasts, but close enough to make her quick flight-like leap. With a great launch and two flaps of her wings, she dropped from the low altitude onto a beast, foreclaws slamming the creature into the ground and breaking its neck and back from the force, effectively killing it on her first attack. Grabbing the freshly killed beast in her foreclaws, she hopped with a glide to clear the fence, taking her kill off a short distance before looking back at her rider for permission to continue. Not yet, Love. Peronith snorted and sat on her haunches, one forepaw remaining over her kill while she looked at the others.
Kikikaa smiled and turned back to the Weyrlings. "Some of your dragonets won't go for a kill like Peronith just did, but they will try to take down the beasts with their teeth first. It's their instinct and they may not all succeed on their first attempt at this," she said, then looked to G'fal to signal that she was done with her part of the Lesson and he could continue.
J'sen, Amonth, and Misty dutifully escorted their preferred mates to the Weyrling bowl, then waited as both the Weyrling Master and his assistant taught the lesson. Unconsciously, J'sen slipped his hand into Calyssa's; Amonth's tail was slightly wrapped around Freyath's hindquarters; Misty perched herself right next to Storm. It was still a rather odd feeling, J'sen reflected, knowing that he and Calyssa had taken the next step toward adulthood. Not quite the way he preferred it, but nonetheless was bound and determined to stay with his lover and future weyrmate.
The young sailor watched as Peronith moved toward the pens, then launched herself toward a herdbeast, the Green's foreclaws gripping the hapless beast and killing it on her first run. J'sen let out a low whistle of appreciation as the Green now glided over the fence, looking back at her rider. Amonth merely watched, the Bronze's eyes shading towards blue as the older dragon neatly took down her intended target in one swoop. Looks easy enough. What do you think, Mine? The gold-bronze looked over at his bonded, and J'sen turned to look at him. Just do what Peronith did and you should be able to pass this lesson, Amonth.
Artemth watched intently, tail lashing with hunger and anticipation of the hunt. Quindara smiled at her lifemate's eagerness, but she did hope that they'd be allowed to try quickly. She wasn't sure how much longer she could restrain her hungry silver.
N'huel watched Peronith with a slight expression of worry. What if Inarith wasn't big enough to take down a herdbeast that way. He didn't want his dragon to be hurt. But the little white did not seem worried, he was practically bouncing with energy and N'huel thought he eve saw his tongue flick greedily over his muzzle once or twice.
K'von whistled in appreciation over the skillfulness of Peronith's kill. Think you can do it like that, Cernuoth?
The sandy brown dragon had been watching the whole process intently and looked up at his lifemate with a thoughtful expression. I will try my best. It does look like fun. K'von snorted, fun was not usually a word Cernuoth used to describe things.
M'thos wrinkled his nose in disgust at the anticipation of seeing blood, but he was pleasantly surprised by Peronith's grace. Unfortunately, she informed them that their dragons would not likely be so skilled. He looked doubtfully down at Sylvanuth, who was watching Manwydath's tail with the rapt fascination of a kitten about to pounce. He had a feeling this was not going to go well.
Nyxith watched Peronith's demonstration closely, liking the way she did it so neatly. She could do that! Oh, yes she could! Her stomach rumbled at the thought of food. When can I go, Kyler-Mine? I'm hungry, she stated simply to Hers. As soon as G'fal tells us to, Kyler answered quickly, receiving a dragon-like huff in response.
Manwydath's head bobbed up and down and side to side as he followed the movements of Peronith in taking down a beast, his tail swishing from side to side to keep him balanced in his half-sitting stance that he currently held and his multifaceted eyes locked on the dragon's movements. That was easy! He was already doing hops like that! I can do that! he told his rider confidently.
G'fal watched quietly as Kikikaa and Peronith took over the lesson. He liked letting her teach too. It kept it more interesting. And Peronith was definitely more dainty about catching her meal then what Treoth was.
Treoth huffed. When I hunt I want to eat, not stay clean, the brown said.
The Weyrling Master chuckled. I don't mind, Treoth. But I don't think some of the weyrlings were ready for that yet. G'fal watched as Peronith finished up, then turned to the waiting weyrlings. "Alright, I want Quindara to start, then V'lain. Then the bronze riders, red riders, brown, gray, blue, green, and white," he said, waiting for them to sort themselves out.
Belenoth was nearly bouncing as he waited to get in line. I want to try! the bronze exclaimed. It looked like fun to him.
You'll get your turn soon, S'tex promised, moving to get in line.
Calyssa smiled over at J'sen as he slid his hand around hers. It didn't even seem to feel awkward. She knew she had deep feelings for J'sen and the gold flight had only proven that. Stormy chittered softly to Misty. The bronze liked the gold. Freyath looked over at Amonth, twining her tail with his.
The red watched Peronith in disgust. I do not want to do that, the red said. A lady shouldn't be dirty and that looks like I will get dirty. Freyath definitely didn't want that.
Calyssa smiled fondly at her dragon. You'll forget about it once you start to eat, she assured her red. And I'll give you a nice bath afterward. She looked up at J'sen. "Freyath doesn't want to get dirty."
F'har watched as everyone arrived, greeting each one with a smile and the occasional word. He watched as Kikikaa and Peronith demonstrated how to make a kill. The whole idea did not sound very pleasant, but far better for Irisith to deal with the blood rather than him. He waited for some of the others to go before him, all while Irisith wriggled energetically beside him. When it was her turn, she took off running, her gait merely a faster, more awkward hop-skip than usual. She spread her wings, which only really served to slow her down, as when she leapt to take off, she was already catching up to the beasts. They were emitting frightened bellows as she pounced onto one of the stragglers, tackling the old buck to the ground. It mewled its fear until she latched her jaws around its windpipe and crushed it. F'har winced. What? I killed it, F'har! I really did! He hesitated, not really sure how to tell her. Irisith, sweetie...you were supposed to fly and then land on it and break its back like Peronith did. The poor thing was in pain and scared! The green looked sad, hanging her blood-covered head. Sorry.
Brigith was watching the whole thing with a calm, serene interest, studying the others to figure out what worked and what did not. She glanced up worriedly at her rider when she saw Irisith make her kill. That was not the right way, Lyrensa, she said quietly and the pregnant healer nodded softly. She was not yet so swollen with child as to be severely hindered, but as a healer, she knew she had to start slowing down and taking things easier. She'd work herself to death in the infirmary otherwise. Brigith returned her gaze to the pens, already singling out a beast so that her flight would be smooth and efficient. Then she took a single bounding stride before launching herself into the air. She went high before circling loosely and diving down towards the herd, banking to single out the lame cow from the remainder of the herd. Just as Peronith had, the gray landed hard on the beast, snapping its neck and spine before it even hit the ground. Her eyes whirling a soft yellow, she turned her gaze to Lyrensa for approval, who smiled. Good job, Brigith. Very good job.
Manwydath wriggled as his turn neared and when it came, he paused only briefly to look at his grumbling stomach, stepping away from his rider and the dragonet that had been behind him, completely unaware that his tail had been a target for some time. Stepping up to the spot that most of the others had been taking off from, he wriggled his haunches before launching himself airborne, only to drop quickly on the beast he had targeted, successfully crippling it but not quite killing it, making his young rider cringe at the beast's sound. He quickly latched onto the beast's throat, crushing the windpipe and finishing it off with a quick twist of his head, then he proudly drug his kill away from the others. Look what I did, C'nell-Mine! he said as he dropped it and lowered his head to figure out where he should start, sniffing at one area or another until he just took a chunk of hide and meat from a hind quarter. C'nell stood back a bit, a little put off by the grossness of his blue's first kill. At least Manwydath was not the only messy dragonet so far.
Nyxith waited as patiently as she could, trying to push Hers into letting her go already, but Kyler kept her firmly on the ground until it was her turn. "Okay, love," Kyler said to her dragon and stepped away as the dark olive-shaded green spread her wings and took to the air with a few short steps. She circled once to gain some height, having seen a few not quite succeed in their kills and then dove for a beast that she had singled out. Misjudging her pounce, she stopped suddenly after landing on the creature, managing to kill it, but favoring her right leg a little. But she was hungry and so she did not bother to worry over a bit of soreness in her shoulder and drug the beast away to start digging in. Cleanliness did not matter as she latched onto the first bite of meat hungrily. "Nyxith, are you okay?" Kyler asked allowed as she hurried up to her green in worry. I'm fine, Mine. Let me eat. And that was the end of the argument for the moment.
