Micala jogged along a well-beaten path on the outskirts of South Sands Hold as she headed toward a smaller cothold with a message for the lady of the hold. Her long streaked hair had been freshly braided that morning after a cold bath with the desert heat expected for the day.
Leaves rustled in each tree that she passed by as a dark gray firelizard darted in and out of them in a playful race with her Pet, chittering away about her morning's adventures. Mikay catch sand bug! Sand bug try bite Mikay. Mikay scold sand bug. Mikay eat sand bug! Happy Mikay!
Micala wore a grin at her gray's picture story, hazel eyes drifting to the crossroads ahead of them where she soon turned right to head out of the main Holding, her footing sure as she hardly slowed her jog, Mikay touching down just briefly on the sign post before darting after her Pet merrily. It was not twenty more steps that a shadow skittered across the sandy ground, bringing the young Runner to a sudden halt in her travels, long plait whipping over her shoulder before gently tugging at its roots to come to a stop.
Looking to the clear skies, Micala hoped to see a familiar bronze dragon coming in for a landing, her eyes only taking a moment to locate the beast in the sunlight. A sigh escaped her lips as she noted that it was not the small, burnished bronze Kyanath that belonged to V'zee, but a watery blue. She had been hoping for a visit by V'zee, having heard that he had gotten hurt two months back via their firelizards. She should send him another message later, so she stored that reminder carefully in her mind and contemplated on checking this out. Maybe he was a Search dragon?
Though she loved the warmth of the sand, she would love to have a larger version of her sweet Mikay to carry messages even further than the small southern Holding she currently traversed daily. The message was not urgent. So long as it was delivered by sundown. She had plenty of time to get there. So, with a curious smile, she rerouted herself to head in the direction of the low-flying blue dragon to see what was up. She could always relay information to the Holder or even the Harper Hall after a dragon visit and Search...

Kaitoth circled over the Hold slowly, sensing his rider's nervousness. South Sands had always been a rough place, but it had never been one which Tesni had feared to tread until the mess with G'rett. Lord K'ain might be moldering in his frosty grave, and his riders might be part of Nova now, but there was always the worry that there was still one on the loose, bent on vengeance. Plus the rogue rider's antics had not endeared the locals to dragonriders as a whole. So it was with some misgivings that she had accepted this Search.
Finally the blue dragon landed on the dusty ground. A small group of people had gathered to watch, but it was much smaller than in might have been at another Hold. Still, it was a start. Tesni dismounted and removed her helmet and goggles. Not many people would be intimidated by her elfin features and wide blue eyes. Itzal and Indra had been left at the weyr, for safety reasons, and she felt a bit naked without their weight on her shoulders. But she straightened and addressed the crowd.
"I am Searchrider Tesni, of Nova Weyr, and this is Kaitoth. We come on Search as there are two dragons ready to clutch any day. If all youngsters between the ages of 10 and 21 could please gather here, I'd be grateful." Kaitoth added a gentle croon as an endnote.

When Micala arrived where the blue had landed, there was already a decent crowd gathered and a line had formed. Mikay landed on her shoulder as she slid to a stop, gazing at the magnificent creature before her. They were all gorgeous in her eyes and the fact that her brother and sister were alive and riders made her all that more happy to attend a Search gathering. Before word had come from her brother, she had avoided every Search dragon that had come to their little Hold.
Having arrived after the woman had introduced herself, Micala had not heard the instructions and so stayed where she stood, gazing in wonder at the blue, so much smaller than her friend's bronze Kyanath.
Mikay trilled and flitted from her Pet's shoulder to investigate the dragon closer in curiosity. She crooned a merry 'hello' before diving into a tale of her existence, ending her chittering images with an inquiry of the blue's existence.
Micala stood frozen as her gray firelizard boldly approached the dragon and his rider. For several moments, she was numb as to what she should do with her pet.

Kaitoth was just settling himself to his duty, one he actually enjoyed, when a small gray thing zoomed into his vision. For a moment, he thought it was Indra, and he was about to tattle to his lifemate when the little thing spoke its name and then began to rattle off a series of images, which, in typical flit fashion, did not make much sense to him, though they were interesting. Finally there was a pause and a sense of inquiry that Kaitoth interpreted as a window for introduction.
I am Kaitoth and my rider is Tesni. I am a Searchdragon. After a pause, he showed her a picture of Candidates being Searched, though he wasn't sure the little thing would understand.
Tesni looked to see what had distracted Kaitoth and laughed when she saw the firelizard. "You look almost like my Indra. I wonder if all grays are so playful." She shook her head and went back to supervising the lining up of the youngsters, figuring it was one of them that owned the little gray.

Mikay paused in her scattered flying to gaze at the blue before remembering to flap her dappled wings before gravity took hold of her tiny form. With a chirp at herself for forgetting something quite important to a winged creature, she quickly changed back to her merriness. Micala Mikay's! Micala message runs! she told the blue, having understood his words and what he was getting at. The little gray whistled merrily before darting off to join her Pet again, curious as to why she was not talking to the dragon, too.
Micala flinched at her gray's return and she found some composure again, looking up at her firelizard's quick images, green-hued hazel eyes listening to the quick messages and quick mind processing their meanings with ease. Finally the young Runner looked back at the group of youngsters from her Hold. She took a hesitant step toward them, but then stopped. Did she really want to do this? Did she want to give up her life of freedom and running to become a Hopeful? Did she want to go to the Weyr and leave everything that was familiar and normal behind? For the first time in her life, Micala was torn on what she should really do, hazel eyes drifting back to study the blue dragon as she tried to stumble over her thoughts of her next action.

If dragons could raise their eyebrows, Kaitoth surely would have. The little thing certainly was excitable. As it sped off to it's owners drawing the dragons attention to the young girl standing there, somewhat far off. He felt something then, that he hadn't so far felt from the other youngsters.
Mine, look at that girl over there. I think I sensed something from her.
Tesni looked in the direction of Kaitoth and their was indeed a young lady there. She waved the girl over, trying to get her attention while still watching the line of youths going by her blue.

The rider's wave did not go unnoticed and Micala glanced at the dragon again before finally stepping forward. Her stomach felt like it was in knots as she stepped nearer the line of Hold children and she wondered just why she felt the way she did. This was normal, right? One got noticed by a dragon and their rider often, didn't they? The Runner fiddled with the end of her braid nervously as her mind bounced from subject to subject as to why she had been called over. Did they recognize her for her brother and sister? Did she do something wrong?
Mikay followed her Pet merrily, trilling her conversation with the blue dragon to Micala in an attempt to make her feel better.

The short line of youth from South Sands was coming to an end with no results. Tesni expected as much, what with the Hold being raided by the rebels plus she herself had just Searched here a scant four moons ago. She looked hopefully at the young girl, a Runner by the looks of it, and hoped Kaitoth was right about her. Otherwise they'd have to search the hold for children who'd avoided the call or go home empty handed.
She smiled at the girl as she approached. "You missed the introductions, but I am Tesni and my blue is Kaitoth. We're on Search from Nova Weyr. Kaitoth wanted a closer look at you." The aqua colored dragon lowered his nose to Micala's eye level, regarding her with eyes the color of cornflowers.

As she approached the rider and her dragon, Micala quickly tossed her braid behind her shoulder and stood at attention. There were only three dragonriders that she greeted on a more personal level and this bluerider was none of them. She nodded, hazel eyes drifting to the dragon briefly before she gave a slight bow. "Welcome ta South Sands," she said clearly in the trained tone of a messenger. As the dragon, Kaitoth as he had been introduced, moved closer, the young Runner stood still, all too aware of the fluttering of her stomach at getting the attention of a Searchdragon. She gazed at the blue's eyes, reminding her of V'zee's bronze Kyanath's when he was happy and content. "Hi, Kaitoth," she managed in a whispery voice, hardly her normal when it came to things like meeting new folk.
Mikay trilled merrily, chittering at her Pet, then whistling and flitting energetic circles about the three beings happily. Her Pet would be just fine!
