The day was already seeming long, and yet it had hardy began, it was a busy busy day, the day before Ranelli's life was about to change forever, the day she handfasted Tardol, Son to lord holder of Nova Hold. Ranelli longed for a moment to herself, but between Tardol's mother, and her own mother, lady Ellimae, there was always someone with her, flanking her every move.
The decorations were going up around the hold, the food was starting to be prepared and Nova hold was buzzing with activity as people wondered around tidying everything up, trying to make everything look as best as it could for the big day tomorrow..
Ranelli wasn't interested, every-time someone wondered up to ask her a question or opinion, one of her 'guardians' made the decision for her.. whether it was what she wanted or not. She was starting to get frustrated about it.. but knew snapping wasn't the way forward.
Tardol seemed enthusiastic, happy and expectant when they has passed briefly that morning, and it had made her stomach drop, Tardol appeared more into this relationship than she..He was a wonderful man, made her laugh, listened.. was everything that a girl could hope for, every-ting that a friend should be...but she just couldn't bring herself to feel anything stronger for him..and yet, she knew that she shouldn't get worked up about it, they actually got along well.. and liked each other which was a lot more than some other people on Pern..and he loved her.. that much she did know.
...why were feelings so difficult?
She wanted to spend more time with him, some time to just talk through her worries.. and hope that maybe he would make it all feel so much better..but there was no escape, and as the day passed onwards her worries and reservations increased, the ladies meant well when they spoke about her future as they would, it wasn't their fault that her doubts threatened to consume her in their darkness.. and Ranelli really didn't know what to do..
...would she learn to love him in time?
...would these dreads dissipate when everything just happened??
"Ranelli!!!" Her mother snapped, impatient that her daughter had not responded the first time she called, despite the fact that Ranelli had not been paying attention. "Ranelli!" She snapped again.
"Yes, Lady Ellimae?" She asked calmly as if there was no agitation in her mothers voice, just as she'd always been told to. Wondering what she had missed.
"your dress has finally arrived.." Her mother added, to which Tardol's mother snapped. "about sharding time.." Ellimae was silent for a moment as she wait for it to register in her daughter mind, and then she proceeded. "We need to get you into it..so the weaver can make final adjustments.." She said, there was a fond smile luring behind her mothers stern eyes. A lady holder she may be, but Ellimae was very fond of her daughter.
"I've had it put in her and Tardol's quarters.." Dolia, Tardol's mother added. "it'll be fine in there, as Tardol is sleeping elsewhere tonight - Ranelli, are you happy with these?" She asked pointing out the delicate table decorative arrangements, but not waiting for a response as they trafficked her out of the grounds and towards Tardols... no, her and Tardol's rooms.
Ranelli was concerned, if Tardol was not sleeping in the room tonight then where was her? and when would she get a chance to talk to him about things?
The walk to her shared quarters was not too long, and as she walked in the first thing she noticed was the large white dress with seductive red decor. It stood out well in a room that held no traces of white or red colourings. In fact, Tardol's room was a rather dark coloured place
The weaver waited quietly beside the dress, looked relieved that the 'bride' had turned up finally - it made Ranelli wonder at how long he had been standing there for. Ranelli smiled, trying to be friendly as she was taught to be.
"Good Day," She said with a nod of the head, a greeting that was return from both her mother, and Tardol's. She hadn't expected them to stay and was quite disappointed to find that they had. Guess she wouldn't be able to get rid of them just yet then!
They dressed her in the dress, doing up the ties as the back to keep it in place and stepped back, leaving Ranelli stood in the middle of the room wearing it. For as elegant as it looked, it was a heavy dress! She was certain that by the end of the day she would be exhausted tomorrow!
"What do you think, Lady Ranelli?" The weaver asked of the young bride after letting her wear it for a moment..
"It's wonderful! It'll do perfectly!" It was Ellimae that spoke up before Ranelli could say anything, and turning her face away, Ranelli rolled her eyes. "Tardol will be quite eager to take you to his bed when he sees you in this!" Ellimae added to Ranelli, who blushed profusely. There was a sparkle in Ellimae's eyes as she said this to her youngest child and only daughter... and whilst the comment shouldn't have upset her, inwardly, it made her feel sick.
...she hadn't though about the consummation of the union..it was not something she was ready for, nor did she desire with Tardol. Her smile faltered for a second, but if anyone noticed they didn't say. It was a thought that alarmed Ranelli greatly.
"Lady Ranelli?" The weaver asked again, wanting a response from the one wearing the fruit of his labour.
"Yes? Oh! sorry!" She said making herself look enthusiastic and happy. "It's lovely!" It truly was, she wasn't lying about that.. just would have been better in different circumstances..
"Yes Ma'am...but does it fit OK? Not too loose or tight?" He asked with a raised eyebrow.
"It's perfect, thank you... fits like a dream" She said.
It was Tardol's mother who spoke up next. "Good" She said, "Now lets get you undressed so we can get on with our preparations..we've got the kitchens to check on, think about how to do your hair..and i still need to send someone to clean up this room for you both.."
Ranelli just nodded, wishing that this day would end already so she could be on her own.. she needed to think..time to escape and think of what exactly she expected from this union.. But something told her that it would be A lot longer yet..
