Physical Description:
(Reference: Lisa Ray)
Tess is, in a great many ways, the feminized version of her older brother – she has the same naturally slender frame, but with the occasional hint of a curve modestly hidden beneath oversized tunics. She’s short, only 5’1”, with a deep olive complexion and the same dark brown hair as her brother, though hers falls in waves just about down to her waist and is usually kept at bay by two thin strips of brown tanned hide halfway down her back (incidentally, in one of these strips, carefully marked with a series of notches, are tucked two Needlethorns prepped and ready for use in emergency stitching situations). Unlike her brother, she is undisturbed with the few pieces of hair that insist on falling forward and into her face though she is often required to patiently retuck them behind her ears. Her eyes, as with A’ren, are the same odd shade of blue-grey, though they tend to be softer and only twinkle when she is especially amused. Her voice, like his, is also soothing and somewhat deep for a woman.
Her waist is slightly accented by a plain belt, though the curve of her hips is mostly hidden beneath the four pouches she keeps on hand at all times. The first and largest of these pouches, about the size of three fists and strung at her left hip for easy access, is carefully packed with containers of Numbweed and replenished, if needed, as soon as possible. Also at her left hip, significantly smaller and tied directly behind the first, is a pouch with a few containers of Redwort, just incase. On her right hip, only slightly smaller than the bag with Numbweed, is a pouch stuffed with Mosstea based concoction. Her latest addition, about the size of the Redwort bag and tied behind the Mosstea, is a pouch with a decent emergency supply of Dragon’s Tongue, which she anticipates may be more relevant in a weyr than at her previous posts.
Personality: Tess’ predominate trait is patience – all other characteristics, emotions, and even thoughts are almost always moderated, maintained, or otherwise influenced by patience. Though not necessarily as trusting as her brother, she is every bit as willing to forgive, and twice as ready to relate.
Her fondness for people naturally engenders in her a deep sense of personal concern for their wellbeing, an emotional standby that was only increased by her Healer training. Despite this deeply personal attachment to her patients – and, as far as Tess is concerned, this bracket is neatly confined to everyone she’s ever met and everyone she’s yet to meet – a calm temperament, a steady hand, and turns of experience have allowed her to maintain a level head when faced with even the most horrific bodily damage. When she simply cannot find any physical source for distress, she readily offers up her services as an experienced and sympathetic listener.
While she does, at times, become highly agitated (mainly when a patient refuses treatment or she fails to adequately address some mysterious ailment), she has a series of calming exercises and logical redirections in place to force herself back into a useful frame of mind; when all else fails, her personal mantra (“Fretting wont bring the Herdbeasts home”), has always managed to clear her head and set her back on the mental path most likely to yield useful results.
While she can get a little preoccupied with her profession, she certainly has a sense of humor and appreciates, more than anything, someone who makes her laugh. Though she’s always had a healthy respect for dragons, it was through direct interactions with one in particular (her brother’s playfully mischievous blue Haseth) that led her to develop such a fondness for them.
She may or may not have commitment issues, and though she is very reluctant to ignore anyone, she would be forced to do so if the topic were ever directly broached. While she is, despite her steadfast-calm demeanor, an extremely passionate individual, she has carefully allotted all her passion to her profession and that, she often assures herself, is more than enough.
History: Tess was born 5 turns after her brother A’ren in much the same way, to the same reserved, adoring parents. As a child, she was a brave a curious creature, incredibly loving and as helpful as she could be. Though A’ren was Searched when she was only 9 turns, in their brief time together as children they developed a strong and lasting bond of mutual respect and affection. Though warm and welcoming, Tess had little interest in expanding her circle of friendship beyond her family, and so she had a rather difficult time adjusting to the sudden and unanticipated absence of her brother. Though she, like her mother, had always shown a strong natural knack towards healing, after her brother’s departure she truly threw herself into the study of the craft to avoid sinking into a depression.
Such an early dedication led to a particularly wide working knowledge of herbal remedies, injury recognition, general medical procedure, and anatomical theory (unfortunately, it did not leave her with any time for matters outside the direct realm of Healing). Combined with her continued dedication, this knowledge base won her many merits as an apprentice Healer and allowed her to climb the ranks fairly quickly. Though friendly enough and certainly eager for companionship, Tess has always, without hesitation, put her profession and her duties as a Healer first, which often results in a complete unwillingness to choose favorites between patients – this ultimately placed an impossible strain on each of her early attempts at close relationships, leaving her rather disheartened. In addition, Tess found that though most people appreciate her nurturing personality, they do not necessarily appreciate her inability to move beyond the Healer-patient dynamic. At one point she expressed these concerns to A’ren, who quietly and politely suggested she may have a few commitment issues – she has not spoken of it since.
After a great deal of travel and many humbling opportunities to work with the great Master Healers of her time, Tess found herself a highly accomplished Healer in her own right and well on her way to becoming a Master herself. Another few turns with her head in the books and her hands in the field, Tess managed to sever every single tentative social tie she’d manage to make (with the exception of A’ren) and earned her Sr. Journeyman’s knots at the ripe young age of 31.
Restless and barely holding her head up out of depression, she agreed to accompany a small expedition south, offering both her services and expertise as a healer. While there, the group stumbled head first into a wild green wher and her clutch just before nightfall. The guides, deeply prejudice against wild whers (not entirely unreasonable), did not hesitate to kill the creature on sight with much ado. But a wher, even a sleepy little green, is not easily killed – many were injured in the scuffle. Naturally, Tess was there to sew them all up. In the process of doing so, the sun set and the clutch began to hatch. The group was again in uproar and went about trying to kill off what they could. However, one little wher rushed to hide behind Tess’s legs, who was already predisposed to disapprove of slaughter. Ultimately, the group and the remaining whers escaped one another, and Tess found herself with a new companion.
Though she had to leave the expedition early to care for her little ward, adjusting to life with a wher was surprisingly easy (she was already up half the night studying, it wasn’t so difficult to rearrange a few hours here and there and cut back a bit on sleep). Plus, it opened up a whole new realm of study and sparked her curiosity in the direction of dragon healing. As a final bonus, two turns, at 36, it gave her the edge she needed to snag her Masters knot quite ahead of schedule. With a willing test subject, she managed to make leaps and bonds in the field of wher medicine and wrote a series of essays theorizing the underlying genetic connection between draconic species based on anatomical similarities and elaborating on how the species had modified based on evolutionary necessity over the turns. Also, when she took her tests, there was a cheerful little voice in the back of her head reciting every bit of information she’d forgotten from her notes. The other masters assured her this was not the same as cheating and, impressed with her commitment and the steps she was taking towards renewing the field of dragon healing, they presented her with the rank.
Soon after her shift in rank, she received a brief message from A’ren reminding her they hadn’t spoken in at least three turns. Tess realized she missed her brother terribly and was, quite frankly, still lonely and unsatisfied. First and foremost concerned that this emotional upheaval would compromise her ability to function as a Healer, she immediately arranged to meet with her brother and brainstorm solutions. Upon finding that she was incredibly fond of her brother’s dragon, and considering her new research direction towards weyr related injury and illness, she decided it was prudent choice to seek a position as Healer in his Weyr. Besides, she supposed, though a weyr is where a dragon is, little grey whers probably belong there, too.
She applied to Nova Weyr with a scrupulous résumé, a lengthy list of professional references, and a sparkling set of new knots. Much to her relief, she was accepted and arranged to transfer there immediately, eager to delve into this branch of research.

Name: Tesk (Grey – 99BBBB)
Age: 2 turns
Size: 11 feet
Physical Description: Tesk is rather large for her color, but is otherwise mostly to standard. Her hide is a soft sort of blue-grey, fading to an even lighter shade along her belly. Her body is elongated and her legs short, so she moves in a sleek scuffling motion close to the ground, but lacks nothing for speed. As with all whers, her wings are absurdly small and her eyes rather large for her head, but all the better for fighting thread at night. Tess does not comment on her wher’s appearance anymore than she comments on her own, but A’ren feels she’s got a rather endearing sort of look about her. He’s very generous.
Personality: Tesk is, plainly put, a little nosey. She likes to be in other people’s business, she likes to know what’s going on, likes to know things in general. Like most grey’s, she’s also surprisingly good at remembering, so once she discovers something she carefully categorizes it away and doesn’t soon forget it. Tesk likes to think that, for these reasons, she is quite useful to her handler, who is also very fond of memorizing things and making lists. However, Tesk mostly ‘helps’ her handler by means of waiting for a mistake to occur and then promptly correcting it. Tess is endlessly frustrated by this.
Though she is, as most wher’s are, fiercely protective of her’s, she tends not to focus so much on the physical state of things but rather the mental and emotional ones. Again, she considers this especially helpful, since Tess is impeccably conscience of her physical state but tends to gloss over the others (and, again, Tess does not find this so helpful). Despite this protective streak, Tesk is actually rather sociable and not at all shy, especially when her curiosity has been tapped.
