See below for the update to this plot!
Now that G'rett has been ordered by Cybele to fly patrol over South Sands, I was thinking of having him and Coth crash during a nasty sandstorm. Normally the sands would be enough to scour flesh and hide from bones, but instead local ruffians from the Hold manage to come across their unconscious forms and take them to "safety". In reality, both G'rett and Coth wind up being held hostage.
Since G'rett fails to report back to Nova, he is presumed MIA - Missing In Action. Quindara suffers from a nervous breakdown, Kiyoni likewise is distraught at the apparent loss of the Bronze Rider. Both Artemth and Elliwodth are doing all they can to console their Riders, but it's not going so well. The Leadership realizes sending him to South Sands was a tragic mistake, but Arktos believes the man and his dragon are still alive and insists they go looking for the pair. Either Cybele can order search operations to begin immediately, or Q'del can suggest contacting South Sands Hold to find out if the holders would be willing to aid in the search. The search is called off due to sandstorms, and everyone fears the worst - G'rett and Coth are both gone. Q'del and Toniel grieve in their own way over the loss of a fellow Rider and his Bronze, and make amends with Quindara since she's taking the brunt of the emotions.
Three days later, a note arrives to the Weyr claiming they're holding a Rider and his dragon hostage, and the ransom is steep. Will the Leadership decide to meet the demands of the kidnappers and pay the price? Or can they enlist the aid of the Lord Holder of South Sands to bring the ruffians to justice without risking war? Furthermore, will G'rett and Coth be found alive, or will there only be a single human corpse and a dragon gone between?
