About the character:
name: Garrett (G'rett)
pronunciation: GAIR-uht (Greht)
age: 22 turns (6.21)
rank: Wingleader, Stardust Wing
gender: Male
orientation: Straight
Family (name, age, rank, location, at least)
mother: Merritt, 45 turns, Drudge, Nova Hold
father: Garen, 46 turns, Master Smith, Nova Hold
sibling: None
weyrmate/lover: Quindara of Silver Artemth
children: None
other: None
Physical description: Garrett stands taller than the average male (roughly 6'2") and has an athletic, fit frame (about 175 lbs) - wide shoulders; a well-defined, muscular torso. Waves of dark brown hair cascade down towards his shoulders, typically worn loose but he has been known to tie it back with a simple leather cord to keep it from obscuring his brown eyes. Sideburns frame either side of his face while a mustache and goatee accent his narrow lips and pointed chin. On his right wrist he has a small, obscure birthmark, but is barely noticeable from the various scars and burn marks he has acquired during his apprenticeship.
He usually will favor tunics with narrowed sleeves rolled up to the elbows, allowing freedom for his large, calloused hands and powerful forearms yet provide as much protection as possible from the all-too-frequent sparks and heat from the furnace. Brown breeches and faded leather riding boots typically complete his attire. Yet if one were to view him sans tunic, he or she would note several thin white scars on his tanned chest and stomach - the results of several fights involving swords and/or daggers.
Personality: Garrett has been known to be kind-hearted, honorable, and usually is mild-mannered; but is also very loyal to those he truly cares for and is almost reckless when he feels he has to lay everything on the line. He's not entirely trusting of strangers and people he really doesn't know, but is willing to give them the benefit of the doubt unless their actions prove otherwise. Once he gets to know someone, however, is when his kind-heartedness will show and eventually will display traits of fierce loyalty - and that same loyalty will often drive him to recklessness when a friend is threatened. He has always been fascinated by the dragons, and holds a great deal of reverence towards them.
His greatest flaws, however, are is if he's overstressed or if someone pushes him too far, he tends to be prone to fits of violent rage; the opposite effect is if he feels abandoned or alone, he tends to be in a deeply depressed state. If he feels overwhelmed by too many tasks at once, or if goaded into a fight he really doesn't want to get into, this is when his rage will show and he'll usually start throwing various objects around - or if this happens when goaded into a fight, he'll start looking for the nearest heaviest and/or sharpest object to give him the advantage if he doesn't have his either of his blades with him. The converse is also true: having been taught by his father on the proper use of both the longsword and dagger, Garrett will focus his rage accordingly and will put most of his upper body strength into each swing and thrust.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, if he were to feel abandoned by someone whom he has tried to maintain friendship, or utterly alone; this is when his depressed state will usually kick in, and he'll typically mope around and say very little to anyone, preferring to avoid contact with other people if at all possible for a few days or longer.
History: Garrett was born within the halls of Nova Hold, and like most children, was often fascinated by the occasional visit from the searchriders from the nearby weyr. He and the rest of the children his age would often dare to dream about flying on the backs of dragons; but like all dreams that have an ending, Garrett's wasn't quite so pleasant. His father, Garen, took on his son as an apprentice smith when the boy was a mere twelve turns of age; in much the same fashion as his own father did. It was a common practice, father apprenticing son and on down the line. Though iron and other various metals were hard to come by, as a master smith Garen knew the secret techniques of how to forge high-quality, lightweight yet extremely durable goods using nearly half of the ore that was typically required. In spite of the elder man's health, having contracted cloudlung a few turns prior and spent enough time in isolation to avoid sickening his family; he was still able to continue his craft on a somewhat successful level.
For the next several turns Garrett learned how to forge various types of arms and armor using the same techniques his father used. He also learned how to be self-sufficient, and thanks in part to a few of the guardsmen, learned how to fight using polearms and longbows. Garen also made sure his son knew how to wield both the longsword and the dagger. The practice dummy within the shop gave mute testimony on the numerous cuts and blows inflicted by Garrett's blades.
It wasn't until shortly after his seventeenth naming-day when Garrett was Searched by a Blue rider from nearby Nova Weyr. At first the young man was a bit hesitant, unsure of himself. Merritt, ever the faithful and devoted mother, took her son to the side and told him a family secret: Her grandfather had been a Rider himself. Whatever talent or ability her ancestor had was likely passed down through the past three or four generations to her son. Garen, on the other hand, didn't wish to discuss the matter as he wanted Garrett to carry on the shop, but the master smith was smart enough to realize that the hand of destiny was on the young man. Together with Merritt, Garen encouraged his son to always think and act like a leader, as a man of honor. Be just towards others, he had said to his son, but give no quarter to any whom would seek to harm others.
It took Garrett nearly a full turn and a half before he finally Impressed to a medium-sized Bronze hatchling named Coth. The dragonet's egg had rocked violently before practically exploding into fragments, and the newly-hatched Coth made continual noises of complaint as he desperately searched for Garrett, injuring a few of the other Candidates in the process and running away from the Healers whenever they tried to step in and help. Garrett - or G'rett as he would now be called - managed to lift the bronze dragonet into his arms and half-stumbled, half-carried him towards the dining hall. Coth at first seemed to be unsure of himself, taking hesitant steps and displayed a complete distrust of other people and dragons, even on occasion exhibiting traits of pacifism. Time, however, has allowed the Bronze to develop a steady-minded, diplomatic nature; rarely resorting to violence unless no other options presented themselves...but still possesses a distrust of Healers in general. He is the perfect complement to G'rett, often sharing the same insightful tactics to get the pair out of a rather delicate situation.

personality: Once unsure of himself and entirely untrusting, along with a disdain for violence, Coth has grown into a Bronze that G'rett is proud to call his companion and comrade-in-arms. Diplomatic, even-keeled, and tactician would be the best adjectives to describe this noble beast; but generally will shy away from Healers and often makes his distrust of them apparent. Coth isn't one for violence, instead encouraging his Rider to negotiate with the other party and find a peaceable solution that benefits all. Yet make no mistake - this Bronze dragon will do everything in his ability to defend those he has been charged to watch over, and when engaged in combat, he is a formidable opponent.
