physical description: Toniel is light in build, though not nearly the wispy-looking thing that Weyrwoman Cybele is. She is sturdy-looking in her thinness, with lean muscles first from dodging the hooves of runners, then from the strenuous task of caring for a growing queen. She is short, standing at approximately 5'4", so that she looks up to most everyone she sees, especially the new Weyrsecond. Her skin is a soft tan color, which turns into a richer tan in the summer sun, with few blemishes to speak of with the exception of a beauty mark below and slightly to the left of her thin-lipped mouth. A delicate-featured face is framed by straight black locks, which she keeps cut in slightly-disheveled layers.
It is rare to see those thin, but distinctly feminine lips, curl into a smile and even then, that smile never reaches her eyes. Eyes the color of freshly-plowed soil are large and framed by long, thick black lashes, but she rarely uses her beauty to her advantage. Toniel tends to select slightly more ornate clothing than Cybele chooses for herself, but when compared to some of the goldriders of old, she would seem plain and unrefined.
personality: Toniel is reserved and quiet, but it not due to any shyness on her part. Her mother kept to herself, mostly, and it is perhaps from her than Toniel gets this trait. She is not disdainful of other people's company, but nor does she actively seek it out. She is just as content to be alone as she is in a large crowd. When she does choose to speak, her voice is soft, landing somewhere in the range of what Harpers would call mezzo-soprano, and almost has a sort of far-away dreamy quality to it.
Toniel is not prone to distractions, remaining very focused in all that she does. She is a very serious woman and laughs rarely. In fact, it is generally noted that she shows very little emotion at all, leaving many people to think she is cold and uncaring. Others wonder if someone close to her died of Cloudlung and the experience so traumatized her that she shut herself down from the world. But this is not the case at all. She simply is one of those people. However, unlike Q'del, she is not overly passionate about anything. She is irritatingly calm when most others would rage or cry, exhibiting the strangest self-control.
The only being she has ever shown much affection for is her darling Aylinth, but it does not come in the usual form of private caresses. Knowing her dragon is there with her is immensely important to Toniel and she quietly reminds the gold of this every day. She is gentle and forgiving of her dragon's mistakes, a lesson learned from turns spent with runnerbeasts.
history: Toniel was conceived when a bronzerider was visiting the Hold on Search. That they had sent a bronzerider out was a measure of how desperate the Weyr was, numbers only just beginning to approach those needed to fight Thread in the coming pass. Raliel, a journeywoman beastcrafter, was not normally one to be taken by handsome faces, but this particular man was kind and had a good sense of humor, unlike the rough bronzerider who had forced himself upon her when she was visiting the Weyr and a green rose overhead. Half a wineskin later and she found herself easily charmed into bed with the ranking rider.
S'ton returned to the Weyr two days later and after a month and a half, Raliel realized her monthly courses were not coming and that she was pregnant. Eight agonizing months later, the beastcrafter gave birth to the dark-haired child, naming her Toniel. Because of his duties at the Weyr, S'ton was not present for most of Toniel's life and Raliel refused to leave her herdbeasts to go live at the Weyr. She was working with a good bloodline and could not afford to lose her work.
Toniel was a quiet child even from her childhood, not quite possessing the same desire to play constantly. Her mother thought that some of this might have stemmed from her wishes to see her father more. But even Raliel's other child, Raliran, was no social butterfly. Still, the girl looked forward to every visit from the bronzerider, though he could only come for a few days maybe twice a Turn.
When Toniel was only eleven, a disease began to spread like wildfire, tearing through the population and leaving many dead in its wake. Of these victims was S'ton's beloved bronze, Bannith. The Wingleader was devastated, having lost everything in the blink of an eye. From the moment Bannith raised his weak body and labored between, S'ton became a shadow of his former self. Then one night, things went terribly wrong. A few well-meaning friends gave the man a wineskin so he could dull his senses and forget about the pain for a night. But S'ton couldn't hold his alcohol well at all and became too intoxicated much too quickly. In an incredible accident, the bronzerider stumbled off the edge of his weyr's ledge and fell to his death.
This news came as a hard blow to the already-serious girl. Toniel didn't speak for days and her infrequent smiles came even less. The girl that was already quite reserve locked down even more, going about her chores with the same efficiency as if nothing had happened. But it was that quiet tie to her duty, the fact that Toniel refused to show her emotions that made it all too clear to Raliel what S'ton had meant to her daughter.
Raliran soon left the Hold to apprentice to the beastcraft, leaving Raliel and Toniel alone. Though Toniel showed an interest in the various animals of the Hold, she was never really drawn to an official apprenticeship. Still, she assisted her mother is raising the few herdbeasts who had not been struck down by Cloudlung. Her interests leaned more towards runners and she often found herself in the stables grooming and eventually training the beasts.
Toniel did not have long in the Hold with her mother before she was Searched by a bluerider from Nova Weyr at the age of 15 Turns. In her usual emotionless manner, she accepted the offer of Candidacy, knowing full well that many dragons and riders had been taken by Cloudlung and that every suitable person was needed for the clutch hardening on the Sands. So she went to the Weyr, but the next Hatching did not bring her an Impression. Nor did the next, for that matter.
It was not until after Toniel's eighteenth naming-day that her big day came. A golden egg had been lain and everyone was hoping that it would Hatch and Impress. The Weyr had been having horrible luck with their queens lately, with one egg not even Hatching and the other hatchling being so sickly that it died only moments after Impressing to a drudge out of seeming desperation. But this time, a healthy, vibrantly-hued gold stepped out of her shell and headed single-mindedly for Toniel. The Impression was unexpected, but it was enough to stir the girl out of her funk. It did not cure her reticence, but she could at least find some joy in life.
Aylinth was a lively youth, hyperactive and talkative. Thankfully maturity has mellowed out the gold considerably, or the mindhealers would have had their work set out for them. The moments between Toniel and Aylinth are precious and emotional, as every glance at the beauty reminds Toniel of her father and his orange-hued bronze.
If dragonrider:
dragon name: Aylinth
dragon age: 4 Turns
dragon size: 42 feet
physical description: Aylinth's hide is a rich, glimmering gold the color of Rukbat as it is nearing the horizon in the middle of the evening. She is stockily built, short and squat whereas Chandrath is long and lean. Her tail is a bit short for her length and naturally thick, leading to a slight loss of stability in the air. Her wingspan, however, is large even for a gold at the uppermost limit. They are perhaps the only graceful thing about her, with finely tapered points and a delicate bone-structure.
The gold's hide is mostly unmarked, with only the faintest traces of bars on her legs like you would find on a dun runner, paired with an orangey-gold dorsal stripe that is obscured by her neckridges.
personailty: Out of the shell, this little gold was a fireball, a whole lot of energy rolled into a compact package. She was confrontational, taking insult at the slightest comment, and frequently having to be talked down from a fight. As easily as she was angered, she was just as easily made happy again, having a generally positive outlook on life. Even though Cloudlung continued to take dragons, including a few of her weyrling classmates, Aylinth was able to take comfort that so many of them still remaining.
Reaching maturity has helped Aylinth to settle into a more peaceful state, though she is still not the reserve being that her rider is. This gold strives to be in the public eye, simultaneously striving for perfection as well. She is calm and regal around other dragons, only releasing her playful energy when she is with Toniel or some of the dragons she went through weyrling training with.
pets:
name(s): Leifa (leef-ah)
species: firelizard
age(s): 3 months old
description: Leifa is all too well suited for Toniel. Though she is barely out of her egg, the firelizard is incredibly placid, rarely making so much as a chirp. She will take up residence on the goldrider's shoulder and sleep, waking only to be fed or to meet new people. Unlike her owner, however, Leifa is very affectionate, snuggling up to even complete strangers and soliciting them for caresses. Her hide is a muted red, almost pink in color, and she is the smallest red seen as of yet on Pern. Her body is delicate and fragile-looking, though quite a bit of baby fat clings to her growing body.
