physical description:
Cheriss is the shorter twin though she is taller than most of her peers. She stands at a decent height of 5'8" and carries her self with the pride. A bit on the thin side, one would wonder if Cheriss eats anything at all. But don't let that fool you into thinking she's weak. Her craft ensures that her upper body belays it's skinny appearance. Cheriss has often wondered if she will ever be graced with the curves of her friends.
Her dark hair is cut carefully short to keep it out of the way of her work. Her grey-blue eyes watch the world with a spark of mischief and hope of a dreamer. Well arched brows act as a shield against the woes and troubles of the world allowing Cheriss to be a childlike as long as possible. Full lips graced with deep dimples showing the world Cheriss's love of life and smiling. Only one scar dares to blemish Cheriss's smooth skin. A dark patch of skin on her left wrist just below her pinky finger serves as a reminder as to why she wishes to be a Dragon Rider. Some would think it's a thread scar, but it is in fact a burn mark from hot candle fat.
personality:
Creative, Dreamer, Impulsive
With a cook as a father, Cheriss learned at a young age that creativity is a wonderful tool. If one has imagination they can do anything. When Kariss noticed that his daughter shared his creative side, he did all that he could to cultivate it. Even if that meant the family pretending that the only girl was a runner for three months. Other times this creative streak had her dying the family canine blue, or decorating the small house with various drawings on the walls.
Along with her creative side, Cheriss is a dreamer. Every cloud holds a treasure, and every rainy day holds a rainbow for the short haired girl. Even after her beloved brother was killed, Cheriss will find the good in anything. The smallest detail that one might forget can make the skinny girl's day. A small flower poking it's colorful head through the barren dirt, a new foal in the stables, anything seems to put a smile in her eyes and her dimples on her cheeks.
As sunny as the girl is, Cheriss does have a problem about not thinking things through. Sometimes it's a small thing, like leaving her classes early to see a new litter of pups. Other times they can be larger, and most of these will get the teen into trouble. Not that she stays in trouble for long. Rarely will someone be hurt during her impulsive moments. The biggest however caused her eldest brother to lose his life.
history:
The day Cheriss and her brother were born dawned dark and dreary, but not long before the twins were born, the cloud cover broke. A single ray of Rukbat's glow shone on the small house. As the twins grew up, their father would tell them it was to show their mother the way home. Their mother had given her life to bring her infant son and daughter into this world. Demariss was born a scant quarter mark before his baby sister made her unexpected appearance. No one was expecting the baby girl to arrive at all, especially so healthy and squalling. Demche survived only long enough to see her daughter and name her before drifting away.
Cheriss's early turns were as uneventful as one would expect from a girl child raised by her father, and growing up with two brothers. Unsure of what to dress his daughter, Kariss put her in the same clothing as her twin. This pattern of dressing caused the community at Green Valley to believe young Cheriss was a very feminine boy. This allowed the girl to follow her brothers any where and every where she wanted.
The adventures the three siblings had were of the usual sort. Explorers, dragon riders, anything the children could get into. One adventure of theirs caused young Cheriss to believe she truly was a runner for a period of three months. To create her runner outfit, the imaginative girl used a long brush for a tail, and let her hair grow long and wild. She also insisted that everyone call her Rae, and would barely speak in anything but a neigh or nicker. Most of the time the girl could be found walking on all fours and eating her meals from a feed bag.
Once she knew that as the youngest she had special privileges, Cheriss used this to her advantage. She was not a naughty child, but a rather spit fire of a young girl. She would do almost anything to get out of trouble, and became rather good at getting others out as well. Especially her brothers, for whom she would do anything.
When the twins were barely ten turns, Kariss decided he needed a wife to help bring his children to be useful adults. At first Cheriss rebelled and threatened to scare the woman away, saying she didn't need a mother. But as she got to know Myrna, the only daughter soon came to love her. Myrna was soon teaching Cheriss the craft of candle making, and the impulsive girl found the art challenging and rewarding. Sadly just before the wedding was set to take place, Myrna was struck with Cloudlung. While the family all hoped she would recover, it was soon obvious that the dreaded disease would claim another life.
The only way Cheriss could escape her grief was to throw her self at the craft Myrna loved so dearly. At twelve turns, Cheriss made the decision to become an apprentice of the local candle maker. Soon here grief faded as her love of her craft took over her life. But it wasn't to last.
Her eldest brother Rissem was old enough to be Searched when a rider came. He found the teen to be worthy of becoming a rider. The family was excited that Rissem was to Impress. A large party was thrown, and gifts and tokens were exchanged to help the teen in his days as a rider and candidate. But his baby sister had nothing to give him at the time.
Needing something special, the impulsive imp decided to make a scented candle for her brother to remind him of home. The only problem was the best place for the fruit that she wished to remind him of was in the middle of a bull bovine pasture. With a cheerful shrug Cheriss took off, not realizing the trouble she would cause.
The short haired girl made it to the tree with no troubles at all. But her mere presence irritated the bulls. Soon her off key singing had them in a frenzy. Rissem had been looking for his sister when he heard her voice and saw the moving bulls. Moving as fast as he could, Rissem tried to save his only sister from what he as was certain death. But he was too slow. A bull spotted him before he made it to the tree. It charged, striking young Rissem square in the chest. Falling backwards, the boy knew he broke a rib or two, but failed to realize he had broken his wrist in his fall.
By this time others had heard the commotion and had distracted the animals enough to get the injured boy out of the pasture. Cheriss had to be convinced to get out of her tree. A close friend of the twins had to climb the tree to help her down. But young Cheriss misjudged the distance and fell a few feet to the ground, cutting her hand on the way down.
Both were treated as best as they could be. But no one noticed that Rissem had broken his left wrist. The healer claimed it was a simple sprain. It wasn't until the boy fell ill with a fever did any one think about a break. By then to was too late, the infection had spread. The very day Rissem was to move to the Weyr he succumbed to the infection and joined their mother.
Four turns have come and gone. Seasons changed and so did Cheriss's body. She grew taller, rounded out slightly, but to her displeasure, not as much as her peers. Boys started to notice she's not the same playmate that tagged along with her brothers, and Cheriss has started remembering old dreams. Just as her older brother had, Cheriss's eyes have been seen wandering towards Nova Weyr.
Craft Information:
craft: Candle making
rank: apprentice
speciality: scented candles
If dragonrider:
dragon name: Eponath
dragon age: Hatchling
dragon size: adult- 35 feet.
physical description:
One of the first red dragons to Hatch on Pern, Eponath's hide is certainly unique. It is a dark, somewhat maroon color that seems dull even after a good oiling. Her body is covered in a series of lighter colored lines, giving her hide the appearance of a runner's hair. She is stockily built, quite large for her color at a mature length of 35 feet, with the room for several riders at a time. Her muscles stand out against her wide-set bone structure, rippling powerfully beneath her ticked hide. She is short, though, for her length, appearing slightly disproportional. With her equally stubby wings, she will be more suited for strength than speed.
personailty:
Eponath is in many ways similar to her sister, Freyath. She is very lady-like, though she is not nearly as soft-spoken as the other red. She is shy, but can also be very opinionated and will stand up for herself if need be. She has a bad habit of lying, however, though it is no out of deviousness that she does it. It is more of a defense mechanism, so that no one can see how vulnerable she really is.
Eponath will have an odd streak of unluckiness. She will seem to always catch the one wind current that tries to blow her off course into another dragon, bring her rider to the one weyr that's absolutely infested with tunnelsnakes, or unknowingly blunder into just the dragon or rider that she and her rider don't wish to talk to.
Can you:
read? Yes, but it takes a while unless it's candle making notes.
write? Yes, and better than she reads for some reason.
figure? In her craft one has to know her figures and sums.
