Calyssa and Sertex were still trying to get adjusted to the Weyr. It seemed so much different from Crooked River. Calyssa stayed close to her brother as they made their way toward the Dining Cavern.
"Do you think we'll meet anyone?" she asked.
Sertex shrugged. "I wouldn't be surprised. I mean even dragon riders have to eat," he answered as he led her inside. They were both thrilled to be candidates, but kind of nervous at the same time.

G'rett was sitting in the Dining Cavern, eating his lunch. It was relatively quiet in the hall, with only a few individuals here and there. The Wingleader of Stardust sat in his chair at the head of the table typically reserved for the rest of his wing. It was one of many privileges he received ever since his promotion, privileges he wasn't quite used to. Nor was his rank. It had only been a few days since the meeting in Cybele's weyr, with Toniel and Q'del present. He still wasn't sure why Q'del had advanced him, but G'rett wasn't about to let the Weyrsecond down. Nor let his personal grudge get in the way.
He thought he heard voices and looked up, in the direction of the entrance. Two young people - probably brother and sister based upon their looks - were walking in. He studied them for a moment, wondering who they were.

Sertex looked around the Dining Cavern. It was so much bigger then he was used to. Of course if he thought about it it made sense. It had to hold the riders and who ever else was at the Weyr.
Calyssa handed her brother a mug of fruit juice as she stuck close to him. "I can't believe how big this place is."
"Me neither," Sertex answered as he caught sight of G'rett. "Why don't we go introduce ourselves?" he suggested.
Calyssa hesitated, but soon shrugged. Sertex grinned and led his sister over to G'rett's table, hoping they weren't interrupting. The teen didn't know if they would really Impress, but he figured it would be a good idea to get to know some of the ones around. "Hello, sir," he said politely.

G'rett watched as the duo walked over to his table. He studied them closely, and figured they had to be brother and sister. The boy greeted him first, and the Wingleader nodded. "Greetings to you both," he replied. "My name is G'rett, Wingleader of Stardust Wing. My Bronze is Coth. Would I be correct in presuming both of you are newly-arrived to Nova, and are currently Candidates?"
While he waited for them to reply, G'rett invited them both to sit down near him. "This table is normally reserved for Stardust Wing, but I'll suspend the formality for a while," he said, offering the boy and girl a soft smile. "Please, take a seat, both of you. I'd like to hear your tale."

Sertex nodded and took the lead since Calyssa seemed a bit tongue tied at the moment. "Yes, sir. Only been here 3 days," the teen answered cheerily. "We're from Crooked River and candidates now."
Sertex helped Calyssa sit down before sitting down himself. "A Wingleader?" Calyssa asked, her eyes lighting up. She hadn't expected to meet a bronze rider let along a wing leader so fast.
Her brother chuckled. "My name's Sertex and this is my twin Calyssa. I thank you kindly Wingleader G'rett for allowing us to sit with you and please tell Coth hello for us."
"Yes, please do," Calyssa piped up.

Edilon looked around the dining cavern for someone to sit with. Fortunately, his father was not at his Wing's table. M'lym was all too fond of forced, awkward meals with his son. There weren't many people around, but Edilon had his sketchpad in his shoulder bag and a pencil tucked behind his ear. Maybe he would just sit alone and draw.
Then, he saw a pair of candidates sitting across from Wingleader G'rett. Edilon grinned and trotted over to the Stardust table. He couldn't resist butting in, especially since the table was mostly empty.
"Are candidates allowed to join the Stardust Wing now?" Edilon asked G'rett jokingly, coming up behind the candidates and putting a hand on each of their shoulders. He looked down at the pair. "Let's see, I've seen you in the barracks...Sarissa and Certex?"

Calyssa and Sertex both jumped when Edilon touched their shoulders. They spun around in their seats, not realizing the other young man was a candidate yet and thinking they were in trouble.
"Calyssa and Sertex," Sertex answered politely. He glanced over at G'rett, wondering if they should leave.
They didn't know yet that Edilon just liked to tease. Of course they had only been there for 3 days, so they hadn't met many people yet. Calyssa smiled a bit when she caught sight of the pencil behind the other candidate's ear.
"Do you like to draw?" she ventured.

G'rett nodded slowly when the boy introduced himself as Sertex and his twin sister, Calyssa, explaining they had recently come from Crooked River. "Well met, both of you. I can't say I've been to Crooked River recently. I came from Nova Hold originally when I was Searched, but that was roughly three, four turns ago." He couldn't help but smile softly at Calyssa's surprise when he told the twins he was a Wingleader. "I was recently promoted to Wingleader of Stardust Wing after a rather delicate situation arose. Rather long story, and unfortunately I really can't go into details due to the nature of the issue. But perhaps at some point, you'll be able to meet Coth for yourselves. He and I tend to share the same mindset when it comes to tactics." G'rett shrugged. "Although he always wasn't like that when he was a dragonet. Took him a while to develop the skill."
When Edilon arrived and put a hand on the twins' shoulders, watching them practically jump out of their seats, he stifled a chuckle, and smirked at him. "Perhaps I'm grooming them for a couple of slots within Stardust," G'rett said coolly. Then he looked at the twins and grinned. "But that all depends on how well they Impress, and how well they do during their Weyrling training." Of course, the way he said it was in a joking manner, but there was a bit of truth to the statement. The Wingleader was now on the lookout for the most capable Riders to join Stardust, and he would give each Weyrling and Candidate equal consideration.
"Calyssa, Sertex, this is Edilon," he nodded at the new arrival. "He's also one of the Candidates that you'll be getting to know over time, and you'll be training in the same Weyrling group should all three of you Impress at the upcoming Hatching."

The twins smiled. "Nova Hold?" Sertex asked. "I've only been there once with my father. We'ver grown up in Crooked River and haven't really had a chance to travel much. We were normally out helping with the animals at home," he explained.
"Oh," Calyssa said. "Then I won't ask anymore on that subject, but I would be honored to be able to meet your Coth sometime. He sounds like a wonderful dragon."
Both candidates seemed to settle down once G'rett had introduced Edilon. At least they knew they weren't in trouble. Sertex glanced over at G'rett. He could tell G'rett was partly joking, but he hadn't realized that Wingleader started to watch the candidates as well. He thought maybe just the weyrlings.
"It's a pleasure to meet you," Calyssa said cheerily.
"It's nice to get to meet another candidate," Sertex added with a smile.

Edilon grinned when the siblings jumped. Judging by Sertex's polite tone, they weren't sure if he was important or not. Edilon was highly amused by this. Then G'rett went and ruined the fun by introducing him. Ah well. He couldn't really expect to play tricks when there was a Wingleader around.
"Nice to meet you as well," he said, taking the liberty of sitting beside them. Now it looked like they were interviewing G'rett, but it felt too awkward to sit next to the Wingleader. "I'm so glad we're getting more candidates again. Things are so dull with an empty barracks."
He set the bag with his sketchpad in it down on the chair next to him, then remembered Calyssa's question. "Yes, I do like to draw in my spare time. I'm usually too busy with candidate things, though." And if he Impressed, he'd be even more busy with his new dragon, but Edilon was sure the sacrifice would be well worth it.

"There aren't very many candidates?" Sertex asked. He hadn't really had a chance to look around much yet. To him it just seemed odd that there wouldn't be quite a few. But then again he hadn't grown up in a Weyr and didn't understand everything. Although he thought Edilon seemed nice. And maybe he'd be their first friend here.
"Oh that's great!" Calyssa said. "I envy ones who can draw. I can only draw stick figures." She tilted her head to the side. "Do candidates have a lot that they have to do?" she asked curiously, looking back and forth between G'rett and Edilon.

G'rett leaned back in his chair and rubbed at his chin, amused look on his lips. He remembered when he was a Candidate and newly-arrived to Nova, but that was several turns ago. Daily chores, practicing his chosen craft, learning about the need to be sexually liberal because there really wasn't such thing as 'marriage' and relationships never quite ran along the same lines as most thought - and that particular Candidate class was interesting...learning dragon anatomy, about the Hatching process...it was mostly a blur to him now, but a few bits and pieces still stood out in his mind. Especially about why he needed to be open-minded about the sexual freedom bit. G'rett had always been heterosexual and never had a desire to be with a man, and had bluntly told the Weyrling Master he really didn't think he could stomach the thought. He wound up spending an extra sevendays pulling double duty in the kitchen as a result. "I don't know if the Candidate Master has changed things since I was a Candidate myself, though I highly doubt it." G'rett spoke. "Edilon would be a better resource on that than I would."
When the question was asked about why there weren't more Candidates, the Wingleader merely shrugged. "A valid question," he said. "Most of the Holds from what I heard are reluctant to send anyone to us for various reasons, even though our Searchriders continue their primary task of looking for potential Candidates. At least, that's the way I understand it. I was my parents' only child, so I can understand their fears of my coming here when I was Searched. Faranth willing, that will change soon enough since we're the only Weyr on the continent." He shook his head, slowly. "Time will tell, though."

Sertex shook his head. "You would think people would want their children to be riders," he said in confusion. Sure cloudlung had hit, but that had effected everyone and being a rider was a true privilege. Not to mention Pern needed as many riders as they could get. The teen shrugged. "I can see that point. My sister and I are the only family was father has left, so I can see how that would be hard."
"But still, to have the chance to be a rider?" Calyssa said. "I couldn't imagine turning that down." She looked over at Edilon to see what he had to say on their chores and duties. She definitely wasn't against chores, but she was curious what all they would have to do now.

((Sorry I took so long to reply, everyone))
Edilon shook his head when G'rett described the Hold's reluctance to send candidates. He couldn't imagine not being encouraged to Impress, since he was a weyrbrat. Not only did his father allow him to stand, M'lym would be very disappointed if he never Impressed. Edilon had been raised hearing how important riders were to Pern. "I can't imagine anyone turning it down, either, but I guess Holders have their reasons."
He shrugged. Holders were sometimes like a different species to him. Chores, on the other hand, he did understand. "Nope, things haven't changed much. We still get plenty of chores. Helping in the kitchen or the infirmary, changing glows, cleaning out the ash pits if you're unlucky." He chuckled. "Basically anything the drudges aren't already doing. Oh, and you get more if you get in trouble." He grinned. Edilon usually managed to stay out of trouble, but he had been given extra chores a couple of times.

Calyssa and Sertex were both glad that their father had allowed them to stand. They both knew if he would have asked they would have stayed despite their desire to be riders. They loved their father terribly and didn't want to upset him.
"Chores we can do," Sertex smiled. "We helped with the animals all the time at home."
"And I took care of the house," Calyssa piped up.
Neither sibling was against hard work. Actually they were looking forward to learning to new things. Although they hoped to stay out of trouble. They didn't want anyone to have a reason to send them home or anything like that.
