"Oh, he's fine since you're here with me. I wouldn't suggest coming in here without permission though," he warned them seriously. "But as long as you don't catch him unawares, he's about like a big canine. Only, I am bonded to him, as a dragon is to their rider." He could tell by their eyes they had never seen a wher before, but he admired their bravery in the face of such a big, and admittedly ugly, animal.
"Now, hand me your Search tokens and I'll record them. You'll have to go to the infirmary for one sevenday, just to make sure you are well. They'll make sure you don't get too bored. Then they'll bring you back to me, and you'll get your chores and cotrooms and things. You have had lessons with the harpers I assume? You can read and write?"

Sertex watched Arkysk as Arktos talked. Like a big canine? He hadn't quite thought of the wher like that, but Arktos said so. "WE definitely won't come in without permission," he assured the man. He didn't want to make the wher mad. Although he was intrigued by the black.
Calyssa dug her search token out while Sertex did the same. They both handed over the tokens. "We have to stay in the infirmary?" she repeated, but shrugged. "That makes sense to me. Wouldn't want to get anyone sick or anything."

Arktos took the wooden disks, recording the two under Kaitoth's tally and marking down their numbers. Then he handed them back. "You get to keep them. In the old days, this was so you could transfer to another weyr if you wanted, but now, its just for keepsake reasons."
He nodded at Sertex. "Its a precaution against Cloudlung. Dragons can catch it too," he said, his voice gone a little hoarse. Unconsciously, he clutched at the saddle-star hanging from its chain, an anvil and a sword, crossed. Then he shook himself. They hadn't answered his question about their education, but he let it slide for now. The healers often took it upon themselves to test the new Candidates. Tesni worked in the infirmary as well, and she often requested Candidate duty.
"Well, that's all I need for now. I'll drop you off in the infirmary. Tesni will probably be by to see you later, she was a Healer before she Impressed and she still works over there in her spare time." He rose from the chair and beckoned them to follow, Forge still sitting on his shoulder.

The twins took their tokens back. Neither had realized they had forgotten to answer a question. They both caught up in looking around. Everything was so different from what they were used to.
"We can keep them?" Calyssa asked with a smile.
Sertex nodded. "Then I can definitely see why they would want to keep us isolated for a bit.' He tried not to dwell on the thought of cloudlung. The hurt of losing his mother was still extremely strong. He smiled a little. "Are the Healers nice too?" he asked.
Tesni and Arktos both seemed nice. He was just wondering if all the Weyr was like that. He motioned Calyssa to follow him as they headed after Arktos.

"Yes, they are all good people. And its only a sevenday," he reassured them, walking down the main corridor of the Barracks and turning just before the Hatching Ground door to another door which was closed but not locked.
Opening the door, he led them into a room that was all painted in soothing greens and blues. There was a man behind a desk who greeted Arktos warmly. "New Candidates for me?"
The Candidate master nodded. "These are Sertex and Calyssa, from Crooked River. They are twins, fifteen turns old."
"Very good, well they'll get a check-up and you'll get them back in a week I'm sure. They look healthy." Arktos nodded and turned to leave.
"See you in a sevenday," he said, before walking out.

Sertex smiled. He was glad to hear that. Although he had never had problems with Healers, so he wasn't real worried. They stopped behind him as he opened the door.
Calyssa peaked around Arktos to see better. "Hi," she said cheerily to the Healer. Might as well be friendly. The twins stepped inside.
"Thank you, Arktos," Sertex said.
"See you soon," Calyssa added.
