Arktos merely raised his eyebrows at Tara's late arrival. He'd have to talk to her about it later, and he supposed he have to punish her. She wasn't usually late, so he decided in his mind that a few days of mucking out runnerbeadt stalls was good enough before he continued. "Very good, Ravis. Browns are medium size for a male, 30-35 feet long. They are consisted more patient, loyal and kind than bronzes, not as much for leading. They will chase any female, but as you said, they often do not have the stamina to catch a Queen. Browns usually will only Impress to men but occasionally they will choose a woman."
Then the Candidate Master turned to Mordecai and listened to his explanation. "You're quite right, you've clearly been studying. Silvers are the same size as bronzes, but as Artemth has shown, dragons defer to them just as if they were Golds. From what we know of silver firelizards, they will rise slightly more often than golds and their clutches will be slightly smaller. They are more similar to bronzes than golds in personality as far as we know, and quite vain, as you said. They will probably only Impress to women. Now, who is next? We still have reds, grays, greens, whites, blues, and Golds."

Viarnie shifted a little and raised her hand. The Trader girl didn't know a whole lot about grays since they were new, but she'd say what she knew. "The grays seem to be about the same size as the blues, maybe a bit bigger. I haven't gotten to see too many," she said. "I've heard they're smarter then the blues and greens. They're the biggest female that a blue is able to chase and still have a chance of winning." She couldn't remember where she had heard that, but it made sense. "They seem to be kind and actually seem to plan for things as much as a dragon can." The girl then sat back in her chair. That was all she could remember about them. She would have to do some more research later. And maybe even embroider something with a gray dragon on it.

Raising her eyes and her hand from the attention due her firelizard, Micala waited to be called on before speaking. After all, politeness and respect got one a very long way. “From what I’ve noticed, reds seem to be quite motherly. I don’t know how Chrysoberyth is, but the younger reds seem to be really patient, too. They looked to be about the same size as browns, I think,” she said, still not entirely certain that her observations were correct or not. Other than that, she did not know a whole lot about them. Time to spend some more time with her brother and sister and find out.
When Kanlar was finally called on, the young GlassSmith threw himself into his half-baked idea and knowledge of the white dragons, wearing a good-natured grin the whole while. “The white dragons seem to be quite playful an’ they look to be the smallest color that we know of. I know the white firelizards’re awful tiny. The firelizards don’t seem real interested in Chasing when females Rise, so I guess the dragons are the same with that. From what I’ve seen in the dragonets, I think they understand a lot more ‘an most colors and might be on the same intelligence as bronzes and golds?” His last phrase leaned slightly toward inquiry, but he was pretty sure of it as an afterthought.
Tialar waited patiently to be called on once he had gotten his thoughts organized. “Golds are very well off ‘cause all the other dragons look up to ‘em and they’re the only ones that can produce another gold that we know of. Even though silvers look to be their equal, they’re still looked up to over them from what I’ve seen. They only ever Impress to girls and they look like they can be caught by blacks, too, since the black firelizards have paired with the golds here and there.” Was there anything else that he was leaving out? Oh, yeah! “And they’re the biggest dragons on Pern.” That should do the trick. At least he hoped so.
Laret waited as patiently as he could, half distracted by his firelizard’s amusement with his brother batting at the little blue. Once called on, he began his dive into the world of blue dragons. “Blues are smart and quick and if ever Thread returns to our skies, they’d never be able to last a full Fall. They Chase any female that Rises and rarely catch any of them. They’re funny and amusing when they’re bored and sometimes just for the sake of it.” Rolling his eyes a moment in thought, he obviously hit the gold mine as he continued, eyes connecting with Arktos’ again, “And with the new colors in the ranks, it looks like their equal in size is the gray dragons, so maybe they’ll be able to catch them sometimes, too.” There. He was done. That should be enough for the moment.

Lirona chimed in, rather annoyed that she was going last and rather wishing that she'd gotten a more majestic color. Oh well. "Greens are the smallest female dragons. They rise all the time, it seems, and are generally thought of as flirty, and silly compared to some of the larger colors. They are infertile, because they chew firestone, but they are the quickest and most agile fliers."
Arktos nodded, "You all did very well. Now, let's write down here what we know, starting with Golds, for traditions sake." He took up the chalk and began writing, talking as he did so. "Golds are the largest female dragons, 40-45 feet from nose to tail tip. They are intelligent and strongwilled, and all dragon defer to them. They Impress to women only. They rise once every one or two years during a Pass, but in thr middle of an Interval it may be much longer. They can be flown by bronzes, blacks and the occasional brown, and they lay clutches of 15-30 eggs, usually. Though their clutches can contain any of the ten colors, at least half of each clutch will consist of blues, grays, greens and whites." That ought to give them something to think about.
"Blacks are the largest males, the same size as Golds. They are quiet, intelligent and protective. They can Chase any female, but are more likely to catch larger colors. Their size makes them too slow to have a good chance at green or grays. They probably only Impress to men."
"Bronzes are the second largest males, 35-40 feet long. Impressing only to men, they are aggressive, and confident, but make good leaders. They Chase the same as blacks nut are maybe slightly more likely to catch a green."
"Silvers are the second largest females, same size as a bronze. Calm, daring, and vain pretty much describes them. Dragons will defer to them as they would a Gold, and like Hold probably only Impress to females. From firelizards we know they rise once a year to every nine months during a Pass, it can be assumed it would be less often during an interval. They can be caught by blacks, bronzes, or browns. If flown by a bronze or black they can occasionally lay Hold Eggs, though silver is more likely. Their clutches tend to have more browns and reds than bronzes and blacks as compared to a Gold, but still half will be blue or smaller."
"Reds are 30-35 feet long. They are known to be nurturing, loyal, and brave. They are generally caught by bronzes or smaller. Since they are much akin to browns in size and temper, I would assume that they would Impress mostly to women with a very rare male. A blue might hope to catch a red, if he was very lucky. They can clutch, assuming that they aren't chewing firestone. They seem to rise about every six months. Judging by Chrysoberth, it seems than 5-15 Eggs is a good guess for clutch size. They will likely never lay a Gold, or even a black, though if a black managed to catch them they might, and silvers and bronzes would be rare."
"Browns, a personal favorite of mine, are hard-working, loyal and patient. They will Chase all colors of female, but have the best chance at catching reds, grays, and greens. They Impress primarily to men, with women being a rare exception."
"Blues are 25-30 feet long. They tend to be intuitive, funny, and a bit moody, and Impress to males and females nearly equally, with a slight bias towards males.. They are considered the most intelligent of the smaller colors, but grays may be their equal. They, so far, make the best Searchdragons. Kaitoth is currently our most productive Searcher. They will Chase silver's and below, they usually won't bother with Golds, because they know they have no chance. But as was previously stated, theyre most likely to catch grays and greens."
"Grays are the same size as blues. They are logical, intelligent, and kind. They probably Inpress similarly to blues, with maybe a slight female bias. They rise very infrequently, about the same as a Gold, actually, and my feeling is that they will not be allowed to clutch. From the little we know about them, it seems that they have really excellent memories for dragons, but lack the intuition that makes blues such good Searchdragons."
"Greens are the smallest females, 20-25 feet in length. They are fun-loving, flirty, and social, and as Lirona said, very quick. They Impress equally to males and females. They rise four times a year, but do not clutch. All males Chase them, as an outlet if nothing else, but browns and blues are the most likely winners. They are also often Searchdragons, and seem to do well at it. They make up the bulk of every wing."
"Whites are the smallest males, and some even seem to get smaller than greens. They are quite smart, and intuitive, and playful, and I expect we'll eventually see white Searchdragons. They seem to have many of the good qualities of eveyr color, most of them have excellent memories, and are ridiculously brave. Their main drawback, besides their size which leads to lack of strength and stamina. is that they are completely sterile. It is assumed they will also Impress to males and females equally."
"Now, take a look over this information, and think about what color you'd like to Impress. I want a five hundred word hide on your decision on my desk in three days. Our next lesson will be about mating, that's a yearly favorite. If you have no questions, you are free to go." He smiled at all of them, hoping he'd given them plenty to think about.

This was one of the first things that Ranelli had attended as a candidate, having only been searched a couple of days before. The young holders daughter was still shocked at what had happened..but pleased none the less. She'd made sure she was on time to the lesson and had sat quietly to the side, slightly away from the group. She hadn't made any friends with the others yet, it wasn't that she was unfriendly or unapproachable, it was just simply because she hadn't yet had the time..
She listened intently to what she was being taught, so eager to both show to Cybele that she had been worth the arguement, but also keen to start her knew life.. she felt like she had been given a second chance.. and she wanted to gasp that with both hands.. and make the most of it. She listend intently, trying to memorise everything that was said.

Ravis studied the information he had wrote down while Arktos had told them everything. The boy smiled a little. He was intrigued by the black dragons and would love to have a black. If a black didn't choose him he wasn't sure what his second choice would be. Oh well, he would write about the blacks though and why he loved them.
Viarnie studied the different dragons. She wasn't at all sure which color she would want. The reds sounded nice and friendly too. She didn't think she could ever have a gold or silver. They probably wouldn't look twice at her. Of course a little gray or green would be nice too. Or even a white. She really didn't care.

Micala looked at the list after writing down notes on them all. Might as well have that information tucked away for latter references, not that she would need to see it. Her memory was very good, but this type of thing she was going to write down, just in case. That and it was not designated for specific eyes or ears only, so it did not matter if someone else happened upon it down the road. Mikay crooned softly as she watched the quill’s end moving about as her Pet made pretty marks on the piece of hide in front of her, even receiving a small dab of ink on her dappled forepaw when she went to grab at it once or twice. Grays appealed to her most, maybe because they had good memories, but she liked the idea of reds and greens, too. She could not see herself on a gold or silver. That sort of rank, she did not think that she was suited very well for.
Mikan grinned as he wrote down some information. He knew which color he wanted. Well, one of two colors. Blue and white appealed to him most and he made sure to include as much about them as he could on his hide. He was not looking forward to writing a big essay, but this would be entertaining, nonetheless. He would just mention both of them since he could not quite decide between them. Pip attempted to steal his quill as he wrote and he continued to shoo the little blue away. At least he was done picking at his hair for his hairpiece for the moment.
Tialar wrote down what he could after Arktos had written things on the board and gave them an assignment to be done. He was not quite sure as to what he would like to Impress more. Maybe he could strive for a brown or maybe a blue? No, brown. He thought they would suit him best. Patience was something that he was good at with the competitions of his brothers a constant.
Kanlar liked the idea of the blues and whites the best and wrote down that information to mull over later on. He would decide during his next free period, then get on with this hide due in a few days. No way was he going to be the last of his brothers in getting it done. No siree! After all, out of what he had heard and seen, he figured those two colors to be the most social of them all. Perfect to be able to keep on making friends.
Laret wrote down everything that was on the board. He was not quite sure which color to settle on entirely. He liked points of each of the ones that picked male riders. He imagined that he would probably lean toward blues by the day’s end, but one never knew once one thought about things. Blues were definitely his favorite, but he could see himself paired with a brown, a bronze, or a white, too. Only his dragonet really knew what color was best for him. Before he left, though, he stepped up to his CandidateMaster and asked, “Sir, what if I can’t settle on one specific color? Do I write about all the ones that int’rest me?”
