Arktos accepted Kiyoni's comfort, leaning his head on her shoulder while he recovered himself. His eyes widened in shock at the blue that stood right in front of him crying. That couldn't be right. No one had ever reImpressed before, and besides he was too old. And of course, a young boy came pelting down the stairs after the blue looking shocked.
M'thos practically leapt out of the Stands and comforted the little blue. "I'm sorry Sylvanuth. I didn't know you were looking for me. We'll get you some food." He looked around, biting his lip, and followed on of the other newly Impressed weyrlings over to the tables with bowls of meat. He took one, but he wasn't sure what to do. He looked to the other weyrlings for assistance.
Quindara began to feel antsy. There were only a few eggs left. But the silver one was still there. She kept her eye on it, looking up into the stands every once and a while for a glance at her beloved. She just had to Impress this time.
Q'del laid his hand over Toniel's when she clutched his arm, recognizing it as not only a symbol of trust, but also as her needing support and comfort. "I know its terrible but just look at how happy the rest of them are. Even the boy with the broken arm looks happy." he said, not knowing what other comfort to give her. He could only hope that the gray was the only one to go between.

There were only six Eggs remaining now, and all were rocking with purpose. Four of them burst open nearly simultaneously, revealing a gray, a white and two greens. The white had come from a black egg marked with swirling forms and eerie staring eyes, but the dragonet himself, though extremely small, was not eerie in the least. His hide seemed to scintillate in the moonlight with hints of every dragon color, and none. His eyes sparkled with intelligence and playfulness as he bounded up to the Candidates, but unlike the bronze of earlier, he was not a clumsy oaf, he stopped just short of them and scampered around them merrily.
The gray had come from a spotted blue egg with a molten core. She was a lovely color, the blue-gray of good steel, causing many to wonder whether this was actually just a pale blue. It was about the right size. But she examined the girls carefully before setting her eyes on Lyrensa, and her mindvoice was quite feminine. I am your Brigith, Lyrensa. I am sorry to keep you waiting. I am very hungry, but later lets do something fun.
The larger of the two greens to Hatch had come from a small white egg that many had feared was a dud due to its odd coolness. But the pale green had practically exploded from it, and seemed to be in perfect health. In fact, she was quite robust and strong looking. She pushed her way past her clutchsiblings and through the group of Candidates with force, standing proudly in front of Luna. Luna-mine, I am Skadith. We will be the best dragon and rider ever, I am sure. But first, I really want some food.
The white seemed to have finally made his choice, or had just got tired of running around. He walked up to Calnex, peering at him intently. Hi, my C’nex. I’m Inarith. I am glad we are together now.
The other green was smaller and sleeker, and a much more vibrant color. She was clearly a curious dragonet, she took the longest to get to the Candidates, as she was busily looking around at everything.
While she was examining her surroundings, another egg, marked with blue and purples swirls and clouds of color, cracked open. The beautifully colored blue that emerged seemed to be half asleep, or in a daze. But he made his way unerringly to Laranes. Oh, L’ran.....I’m Morpheoth....I’m really tired...but also hungry....lets get some food.
The green finally made her way to the Candidates as the silver moon-marked egg finally showed cracks. She seemed to almost skip up to Demariss. Oh, D’mar! Do you see how lovely everything is? There’s so much I want to show you... after I eat. I’m starving. I’m Sionnth, by the way. We’re going to have a great time!
Just as this Impression was made, the silvery shell fell away to reveal an exceptionally lovely silver dragonet. She seemed to realize that everyone’s attention was all on her, and she held a pose for a moment, to make sure everyone had got a good look. Though the sky was beginning to lighten with the approach of day, the full moon was now directly overhead, making her glow. She made her way to the Candidates, not really taking her time, as there weren’t very many to choose from. Quindara, I am Artemth. Our paths are linked now forever.
With the last Impression made, a cheer went up among the spectators, everyone glad that the Hatching had gone fairly smoothly. Only one dragonet gone between, and a few Candidates injured, but no fatal maulings. The new colors had disturbed or worried many, but in light of the Feast to come, most had put those thoughts away for later. The Weyrwoman announced that breakfast would be served in the Dining Cavern and the Feast would be that night after everyone had got some sleep. This was greeted by cheers, while the new weyrlings fed and oiled their lifemates. The sun was just now peering over the horizon, and everyone seemed content with the new day that was to come.

Velain was not enjoying this Hatching. It was hot, his robe didn't fit him properly, and he was tired. The dragonets were interesting, but not interesting enough to keep his grumpiness away completely. He already needed another bath, between the heat and the sand, and a dirty Velain was never a happy Velain.
When the green ran into a boy, cracking his arm with a sickening sound, Velain started to back slowly away from the eggs. This night was just getting worse. He was so focused on watching the green, in case she barreled into some more candidates, that he didn't see the gray heading right for him. The hatchling collided with him, pushing him off his feet and then running away. Velain let out an animal cry of pain as the gray stepped right on his face, her claws leaving three marks across his cheek.
Through pain-fogged senses, he heard the keening of the dragons, but he didn't know why they were sad. The sound was horrible. He covered his ears, but he could still hear it. His ears only felt stuffy, and as the keening faded it was replaced by ringing. Why was the ceiling spinning like that?
He was only out for a second, and when he came to again, he was being carried to the Healer station. "My face!" Velain sobbed piteously. He wasn't just crying for the pain, but for the scar that would surely form there.
I am Osiroth, my V'lain. Let us go partake of nourishment. Where was that voice coming from? V'lain looked down and saw a large Black dragonet marching up to him. Another sob wrenched from his gut, but now he was crying from shock and joy. He had Impressed!
"I'm a little busy right now," he said weakly, reaching out to touch the black hide and reassure himself that it was real. He squirmed a little under the Healer's hands. "His name is Osiroth. He needs to eat," V'lain told them impatiently. He wanted to go feed his dragon, not lie here.
***
Every Hatching was different. Edilon had never been woken in the middle of the night to attend one before. He was groggy at first, but his bath woke him up, and by the time he reached the sands, he felt alert and excited. Maybe this time he would finally Impress.
First to hatch was a bronze. That meant good luck, but Edilon wasn't particularly interested in the bronze. He knew he could never Impress that kind of dragon, as much as his father might wish it. A blue was next, and the first Impression was made. Edilon sighed as he watched Cynell with his new dragon. It seemed a little unfair that the boy, just barely out of the creche, would Impress on his first try while he was left standing for turns on end.
The Impressions continued, with a Brown going to a girl. That was certainly unusual, and Edilon hoped that Minette would be able to stand up to whatever criticism she received for it. Then a gray dragon hatched. Edilon blinked, making sure that his eyes weren't playing tricks on him. Gray dragons were usually sick, but this one seemed healthy.
He gasped as a bronze ran into a boy, then Impressed him, and when a green did the same. Edilon knew he was lucky that he had escaped all of his Hatchings with only a few bruises and scrapes here and there. He shook his head as the gray slashed Velain across the face; that would leave a mark. Just another battle scar to tell stories about in the dining hall.
Edilon cringed when the gray vanished between. He gritted his teeth as the keening broke out. It wasn't the first time he had heard the dragon's mourning song, but it always left an impact. He was almost too distracted to notice the strange Red dragon, but then he saw her Impress to Calyssa and smiled. He would have congratulate her and S'tex later.
There was a lull then, and Edilon took a deep breath, mentally preparing himself for whatever else would come. Finally another egg hatched, revealing a black dragon. The same color as Arktos's wher. It seemed like the dragons were developing the same colors as dragons and whers now. Edilon felt grateful that he was living in a time when he could see all these changes happen and be right in the middle of it.
His eyes slid from the black to the pretty green that had hatched in his wake. She was walking confidently towards the candidates. Edilon watched her closely, almost thinking that she was going to run into him. He steeled himself for a collision, but instead he felt a burst of warm feelings and heard a soft but sure voice in his head. Of all the ones I have seen, you are the best, my E’lon. I am Danuth, you and I will always be together now.
"Oh, Danuth! I'm so happy you found me at last!" E'lon cried, throwing his arms around her, happy tears sliding down his cheeks. It felt like everything in the world had aligned, the missing piece of the puzzle finally in place. Danuth was so perfect, everything he wanted and needed. He didn't want to move, he just wanted to stand here forever and look at her.
I am rather hungry, Danuth said a bit apologetically. E'lon laughed, straightening up again and letting her go. "Sorry. Let's get you some food," he said sheepishly. He led Danuth towards the exit, excited to show her off to everyone.
***
M'lym smiled as Meera sat down, glad that the Greenrider had joined him. Seeing her erased his grumpiness at being woken up in the middle of the night. "Let's hope this is the good Hatching we've all been waiting for," he said, watching as the candidates filed in. There was his son, looking happy but nervous. M'lym truly hoped the boy Impressed. He was beginning to think that Edilon would lose hope if he didn't.
He didn't say much to Meera as the Hatching progressed, except for a few exclamations here and there about what was happening. It was certainly an eventful Hatching, for better or worse, with maulings and new colors popping hope. He was surprised to see the new colors, but then he had already suspected that it would only be a matter of time before the dragons copied their smaller cousins.
He saw a green striding purposefully towards his son, and then the look on the boy's face confirmed that he had Impressed. "Yes!" M'lym cheered, grinning. He didn't even care what color, he was just happy that E'lon was finally paired to a dragon.
He looked down and realized that he had grabbed Meera's hand in the excitement of the moment. Clearing his throat, he released it. The last six eggs hatched, all Impressing without incident.
"Breakfast sounds good. I'm starving." M'lym stood, yawning a little. Now that the excitement was over, he felt tired again. "I should go congratulate Edilon. I'll see you at the feast, Meera," he told the Greenrider before heading down to find his son. He was definitely planning on saving her a dance tonight.

Kia was feeling a little emotional herself as the Hatching finished off. It brought back memories of her Impression to Merequith. What a tumultuous time that had been, so soon after Jefyr's death. Merequith had been the best thing that ever happened to her, and she probably owed her sanity to him now.
She glance down to the Healer station, chuckling a little when she saw C'olt dealing with the wreckage the Hatching had caused. And what was the man wearing? C'olt was always sure to outdo all the ladies with his clothes.
Maybe that is why you think he is so pretty, Merequith said as he lifted off to go find a good place to watch the hatchlings emerge from the sands. Kia blushed and shook her first at her dragon. You be quiet!
Still fuming slightly at her dragon's comment, Kia followed the crowd out of the Hatching Grounds. She had to get some more sleep, and then get ready for the feast.

Demariss was proud of his twin. She had Impressed a stunning dark red, whom she called Eponath. Beaming as his sister made her way to the door way to the waiting food, Demariss missed the next cracking of eggs. Everything was happening at once! How did they expect a body to keep up?
Watching the new dragonets, Demariss's eye kept straying to the prettily colored green. Various hues danced in the moonlight as the pretty thing danced her way down the line of candidates. She seemed to have such a fun time that he couldn't help but smile and laugh quietly. She took her time in finding her bonded, enjoying what the new world had to offer her.
Before he knew it, the green stood before him, eyes swirling a rainbow of colors he itched to create on a dish. Then he too felt the blending of minds, of souls as two hearts became one in an instant. Oh, D’mar! Do you see how lovely everything is? There’s so much I want to show you... after I eat. I’m starving. I’m Sionnth, by the way. We’re going to have a great time!
D'mar smiled as he felt the wonder and joy his new bonded felt at the world, "Indeed it is a wonderful place, Sionnth. I'm glad you find it to your liking, and would dearly love to share it all with you. Now, come, my pretty. Let's see if they have enough food for us as well!" With a hand resting on Sionnth's head-knobs the new pair made their way towards the entrance D'mar's twin had taken just moments before. Sionnoth skipped along side of her bonded twittering about all the new things they would see together.

Senior Weyrling/Journeyman Healer C'olt
C'olt blanched at the boy when he cried that his face would now be hideously scarred from the blow. "You'll be fine. Before long, it'll fade into thin white lines...and they'll be barely noticeable unless you're out in the sun. Hold still." The Healer looked up just as he saw something out of the corner of his eye, something nearly the color of shadows. Wait. Another odd coloration? And his eyes were rainbow...looking down at the new Weyrling, C'olt gave him a mocking grin. "Oh, trust me, I know that it's important that you feed your new lifemate. I had to do the same when I Impressed to Aromath." His is Osiroth, C'olt. V'lain is his name now. the gentle voice of Aromath came to his mind. Looking the black dragonet up and down, he had to nod in appreciation before helping V'lain to his feet. "Don't keep him waiting," C'olt said with a wink. "It's not wise to upset a hungry dragonet."
---------------------------------------------
Wingleader G'rett
G'rett unconsciously held his breath as one by one each dragonet that Hatched made its way over to their bonded. He looked down at Quindara, knowing what was going through her mind right now. But he still kept holding on to hope. He just knew this had to be her time. Six eggs. One of them was a silver. One by one, each of them hatched...a white, a blue-gray, a pale-green and a more vibrant green. Then another blue. All five dragonets found their lifemates, which meant just one was left.
The silver one. But would it hatch?
Only Quindara and a few other Candidates now remained on the Sands. G'rett felt sorry for his beloved, and was ready to console her in case she wasn't going to Impress this time. Yet as he watched, a silver dragonet emerged from its shell. It stood still as if posing, then made her way over to the remaining Candidates...
...and stopped in front of Quindara, its rainbow eyes suggesting the two were now bonded.
G'rett let out a sigh of relief and hung his head, lowering his hands. His eyes were wet with tears. His beloved had finally Impressed. Even though he didn't directly turn around, his mind reached out to his own dragon. Coth? What's her name?
Silver Artemth, to Quindara, came the response. You seem relieved, but why are you crying, G'rett? G'rett wiped away the tears from his eyes. I'm crying because I'm happy, Coth. Quindara finally Impressed. Indeed, it is truly a cause for celebration. Coth crooned with joy at Quindara and her Artemth.

There certainly were some loons in this clutch. I'en had told him that dragons came in only five colors. Yet it seemed that all that was missing was a rainbow dragonet and he'd've seen everything. Calnex fiddled with his dark hair, sighing as he wondered what would happen next. And then eggs hatched--there was a strange white dragon next, no bigger than a gold fire-lizard. It pranced about, making Calnex's restlessness even worse. He wanted to run somewhere, this excitement was bothering him!
And it seemed that he could bear it no longer when a young voice entered his mind. Hi, my C’nex. I’m Inarith. I am glad we are together now. He promised that he wouldn't cry like the others, and he stayed pretty determined to take it in stride, but he suddenly understood why people risked life and limb to Impress dragons. C'nex, for it seemed that Inarith had named him, now had someone who wouldn't stab him in the back or consider him to be a moron.
"I--I'm glad we're together, too," he said, sounding as if he was holding back either sobs or laughter. Indeed, he wasn't sure if laughing or crying was more appropriate. Instead, he watched the little dragon and considered picking him up. He stooped down instead and stroked the dragonet's chin with one finger. "You're smaller than the others, Inarith. I wonder how you're going to carry me when you get bigger."
Don't worry, Inarith said. A small rumbling had started in his chest, and his eyes closed half-way. We will be great, C'nex. I know we will. Then the dragonet cheeped. I'm hungry, C'nex. Can we go get something to eat now?
C'nex still wasn't sure if he should carry the small dragon or not. He decided not, since no one else was carrying a dragon. It might embarrass Inarith, too. He stood, then patted his thigh as if calling a dog to him. "Let's head off, Inarith. I've worked up an appetite, too. I could eat a whole herdbeast!" He laughed as he walked to feed his dragon, Inarith romping around his feet the entire time. He was certainly going to get into an argument with I'en over whose dragon was the most magnificent!

The heat of the Sands didn't seem to be letting up any time soon and Lyrensa's soles were on fire. Yet, they also seemed tough as she bent to pick up one foot to check herself over for injuries. The skin didn't seem too bad, quite rosy, but not burnt yet. She rocked back and forth, trying not to focus on her feet and keep the cooling thoughts in her head. It was hard, especially with the heat being as bad as it was. Of course, the dragons were doing quite a good job of distracting her, mauling people left and right. She narrowly avoided the claw of one dragon, leaping backwards at just the right moment.
Time flew past and she didn't even notice that candlemarks had passed since she had been awakened by the humming of her firelizards. Suddenly, it was down to six, though the intact shells were not immediately discernible amidst the wreckage of now-empty eggs. And blood. Those dragonets did not seem to care who got in their way, though she supposed she could not blame them. They were forced out of their shell by a fierce hunger and a need to make the connection that every dragon needed to survive. So if they were desperate, so be it.
Four dragons seemed to Hatch at the same time, revealing a pale bluish-gray, a glittering white, a nearly-white green and a bluish-green. She fervently hoped for one of them to come to her. That white was pretty, even if he was odd, though the pallor of that green worried her. The gray began to walk along the line of female Candidates, eying each of them before her gaze lifted to Lyrensa's face. I am your Brigith, Lyrensa, the soft, feminine voice sounded. I am sorry to keep you waiting. I am very hungry, but later let's do something fun.
Lyrensa's face split into a wide grin and she knelt to throw her arms around the small gray body. Yes, we will, Brigith. I promise! From above her, she could hear the excited trills of her firelizards, who had also began showing their happiness by performing a litany of aerial acrobatics. Flips and spins and quick flapping, they did it all. They waited until Lyrensa straightened and began to leave before they slowly drifted down to her, hardly able to restrain themselves. They chittered at the gray, who peered at them curiously. They seem friendly. Who are they?
Fariah and Radko, Brigith. Fariah is the green and Radko is the blue. They are very friendly! Lyrensa explained as she walked. Soon they arrived at the food and she set to work feeding Brigith, chiding the firelizards when they tried to steal some of the meat.
Toniel was grateful for the comforting way Q'del's hand covered hers, even if that gratefulness didn't quite penetrate her stony facade. She struggled to control herself, nodding quietly. There was no denying the joy-filled faces of those who had Impressed. She just wished she had been able to do something about that gray who had betweened. With a Pass approaching, it was all too important for them to have as many dragons as possible. She didn't want to think about the others that they would lose during weyrling training and then the losses they would take from the full riders.
She forced her gaze out over the Hatching Sands, brushing against Aylinth's mind, only to have the queen engulf her with soothing thoughts. A small smile played at the corner of her mouth. What would she do without her dragon? She watched as more of the strange mutated colors Hatched and then...the large silver-colored egg began to split. Ah-ha! There was the silver she had expected. Only a few Candidates remained on the Sands, one of them being Quindara, Q'del's younger sister. She watched as the silver-colored dragon approached the redhead, her eyes swirling into rainbow hues. "She Impressed the silver," she said in a hushed voice, in surprise and awe of Quindara. To Impress the first silver dragon...that would put her out of her brother's shadow!

K'von saw the boy who had Impressed from the Stands looking totally confused at the tables with the meat. He walked over and held out his hand in greeting. "I saw you Impress from the stands. I'm K'von, my brown is Cernuoth. Would you like some help?"
M'thos (he still felt odd calling himself that) shook his hand. "I'm M'thos, and my..my dragon is Sylvanuth. I just don't want to do anything wrong." He felt completely out of his depth, and yet the feeling of love and acceptance from Sylvanuth calmed him.
I'm sure you could do it right on your own Mine. You are smart. Sylvanuth assured him.
K'von nodded. "Its all right. You just feed him one piece of meat at a time, and make sure he chews. Once you start getting a full feeling from him, then you know to stop. If you overfeed him, he'll get sick, and he's too young to know better." Both Arktos and his father had told him this. "Then, we're supposed to go to the weyrling Barrack and give them a bath and oil them. I'll wait for you, so you can follow me an' Cernuoth."
It is kind of you to help that young one. Cernuoth said seriously.
K'von laughed inwardly. He's older than you are, silly. But I couldn't just leave him standing there. Everyone's so busy, they kind of overlooked him.
I am not silly. Cernuoth retorted, and K'von stroked his eyeridges in reassurance, feeding the brown another piece of meat. He wondered when he'd get to see F'har. He hadn't even had time to congratulate him on his Impression or anything.
Quindara watched as most of the other eggs Hatched together and found their lifemates, feeling resignation set in. Maybe the Searchdragon had been wrong. She could just quit standing and concentrate on her craft, give G'rett lots of children...but no, that really wouldn't have been her style. Then the silver egg she'd been eying all along burst open. She gasped at the beauty of the silver hatchling that was revealed, though she almost laughed at its unashamed posing. Then the dragonet marched right up to her, lifted her rainbow eyes to look into Quindara's green ones and spoke into her mind. Quindara, I am Artemth. Our paths are linked now forever.
The consciousness of the dragonet seemed to flow into her, merging with her until it seemed they were one being. She fell to her knees in awe, overwhelmed with emotions she couldn't even begin to name.
Are you all right, Mine? I am really hungry, so could you take me to some food? Artemth said, nudging her in the forehead with her own head.
"I am fine, Artemth. Its just that I am so happy. But we can go get you food right now." She could feel the newborn dragon's hunger twisting in her own belly. Standing back up, she brushed the sand from her and looked up at G'rett, eyes shining, and waved.
Who is that, Mine?
That is G'rett. I love him. You'll meet him later.
Oh, well, not more than you love me though?
No. Its a different kind of love. You'll understand when you're older. Now lets go get food.
Q'del watched his sister walk towards the meat tables with the silver dragonet. He was glad she had Impressed, but he sensed that the mutant colors, and especially the silver, which he knew was a Queen as much as a Gold was, would cause trouble later. "I'm proud of her, but she sure knows how to make a scene and that dragon seems the same." He smiled at Toniel, relinquishing her hand. "Do you feel better now? It went fairly well all told, besides the gray. We have 20 new weyrlings now." He stretched and stood. "Can I escort you to breakfast, my lady? I feel like *I've* been cooped up in an egg for months too, I'm so hungry."
Demnoth nuzzled Aylinth happily down on the Sands. All the babies were as pretty as you said. Lots of different colors, like a rainbow! Demnoth didn't really know that this might be a bad thing.
Meanwhile Arktos wiped his eyes and smiled at Kiyoni. "It was a good Hatching. I'm glad you were here with me. Now, lets go get breakfast, and then...a nap." he pulled her close and kissed her cheek before standing up, holding out his hand to guide her from the Stands.

Kiyoni gladly held Arktos until he felt ready to move again. She gently kissed his cheek as she watched the rest of the Hatching. She grinned as she saw the candidates she and Elliwodth had Searched Impress. And she was intrigued by all the different colors. She wondered what their personalities would be like.
Kiyoni grinned at G'rett when Quindara Impressed. That was great news for the bronze rider. And a silver at that. That was impressive.
She looked up as the Hatching ended. "It was," she agreed. "Everyone Impressed without much action." It was always good when no one got seriously hurt. She nodded. "Breakfast and a nap sound great," she agreed, accepting his help up. They had definitely gotten up too early. Rivi reappeared on her shoulder about that time and chittered softly.
***
Meera smiled at M'lym. She nodded. "I'm sure it will be good," she said as she scanned the candidates for Edilon. She hoped that he would Impress. That would be great for both him and M'lym. She chose not to comment as M'lym grabbed her hand. She didn't really want him to let go.
"He Impressed!" she cried happily. "Congratulations, M'lym." She nodded. "I shall see you then. Tell E'lon congratulations for me."
***
G'fal and T'tarel both grinned as the last candidate Impressed. T'tarel was thinking about new wing mates while G'fal was thinking about helping these weyrlings learn everything they needed to know.
****
S'tex grinned at J'sen. "I'm glad he didn't cause Amonth to hurt you too badly," he said, shaking J'sen's hand. "And congratulations as well.
I am sorry, Belenoth told J'sen and Amonth. I just wanted to meet everyone. The bronze's tail flicked back and forth as he waited for another piece of meat. He just couldn't seem to sit still.
Calyssa smiled proudly as she touched Freyath's head. To her it didn't seem odd to have a red dragon. Who cared? Freyath was hers and that was all that mattered. Storm appeared not long after Misty did and landed on Calyssa's shoulder. Freyath cocked her head to the side. Hello, little one, she said softly.
"Freyath, this is Storm," she introduced her flit to the red. Her face flushed at J'sen's compliment. "Thank you kindly. Amonth is a very handsome fellow as well."
Freyath looked over at Amoth as she daintily chewed her meat. Good day, bronze Amonth, she said primly. You and Yours make a handsome pair.
Caltex came running down to meet his children. He enveloped them both in hugs as he looked at their dragons. "A bronze and a red!" he said proudly. "Tell me their names."
"This is Belenoth," S'tex introduced his father. "Belenoth, this is my father."
"And this is Freyath," Calyssa answered.
All three looked over when J'sen's parents and sister arrived. Calyssa smiled friendly. She had hoped to meet them at the Hatching. Although her face reddened at Jaylen's words. She looked over at J'sen uncertainly.
Caltex was confused. "Excuse me?" he asked curiously, looking at his daughter and J'sen.

Roni made it to the sands despite herself, shepherded by the press of candidates surrounding her until she found herself once again facing the eggs. In some ways, this time was less terrifying than the last. She wasn't expected to do anything, except get out of the way should one of the hatchlings get to close. All she had to do was stand and wait, try to keep herself from hyperventiliating.
But there were eyes on the sands, gazes from above that she could not help but be aware of and she hunched protectively, as if each gaze was a physical weight. The candidate master had demanded that they think of happy things, calming thing, but she couldn't think of any, could only think of danger and fear and the eggs which were rocking, then hatching. And she was ready for that, ready until a white dragon broke out of one of the eggs and like many of the others she could not help but gasp.
This wasn't right! There were, there weren't any whites. No one had warned her about them. No one had said what to do if a dragon was white. She continued to watch, chewing her lip and shifting nervously until the second strange dragon, a gray, threw itself between. That earned a whimper and she stepped back, trying now to get away, not quite willing to deal with what she'd just seen.
And then. A voice. A voice and a feeling and she was falling and the voice was saying Ronasha, I am your Indrath. I will never leave you.
The thing about it was the truth of it. The real of it. The knowledge that she would never be left, that she could mess up, she could disappoint, but no matter what, she would never be left. And it would be okay. She could be, well, safe.
The sand was hot on her knees and Indrath's hide soft beneath her fingers. She couldn't remember kneeling, but her cheek was pressed against the dragon's hide.
Come now. You do not like the crowd and I am hungry. It is time to feed me. Indrath nudged her gently and she found herself rising obediently, resting a hand on the dragon's head as the two of them made there way off the sands. Funny, how Roni was barely shaking.

Toniel was a little surprised by his words, not expecting him to be disapproving of his sister's Impression. Then again, they didn't seem that close. And Toniel couldn't argue with his assessment. The way she had flared her wings and posed...it reminded her a bit of Aylinth's Hatching. Thankfully, her position was secure as the Weyrwoman's Second, or she might have worried about Quindara's new place in the hierarchy. She allowed herself a small smile, feeling slightly exhausted by the worry and excitement, not to mention the long day before and only getting a few candlemarks of sleep.
"Yes, I do feel better," she admitted in her quiet, whispery voice. It made her sound like a meek, mousy girl even despite her clear bond to her queen. When Q'del stood, she soon followed suit, dipping her head at him. "Food sounds nice," she agreed.
Aylinth was busy puffing out her chest and extending her wings proudly. Demnoth's muzzle was welcomed and returned, with her adding a croon in. They were very colorful and very pretty. The bronzes were handsome, I suppose, she said in her usual self-assured manner. Now my rider can stop worrying. I do not know why she insists on worrying. No one would have hurt our eggs. And none of my hatchlings would cause trouble.

C'olt watched as the last few hatchlings made their way towards their bonded, noting with satisfaction his fellow Healer Lyrensa had Impressed to a gray. But what shocked him along with everyone else was the very last egg - a silver - had given way to reveal a very lovely and elegant silver female. She posed for a moment, in much the same fashion he'd done a time or two, then made her way over towards the last few Candidates as if certain which of them would be her bonded. Quindara.
He'd always daydreamed about having his way with the Weyrsecond's sister, but C'olt supposed this particular color mutation meant he was now vastly outranked. If he was any sort of judge, that silver dragonet was roughly the equivalent of a gold...which also suggested there could be a new Weyrwoman's Second or possibly a new Weyrwoman one day. He turned to look up into the Stands and merely stared at Toniel and Q'del, wondering what the pair would make of this. He then noticed G'rett had been crying a little, and seeing Quindara wave at him as she made her way off the Sands gave him a brief glimpse of insight...
Unofficially, they were a couple.
C'olt heard rumors G'rett's Coth lost Aylinth's Flight, albeit just barely, to Demnoth. But in light of this new information, the Healer wondered if G'rett chose to pursue Q'del's sister in order to get back at the Weyrsecond, or if Quindara wanted to be with the Wingleader to annoy Toniel. Or if it was a combination of the two.
He shook his head and sighed, then turned back to focus on the last few Candidates who failed to Impress, getting them off the Sands so he and the rest of the Healers could tend to burned feet. But not before he caught sight of Kia, who was laughing at him then suddenly blushed, shaking her fist at Merequith. C'olt laughed, a rich tenor-like melody. He knew it! Kia, in spite of her being cool towards him recently, still was smitten with him.

G'rett made his way down the steps and over to where Quindara was with her Artemth, along with the rest of the new Weyrlings. He caught her attention, and gave her a brief hug. He knew he couldn't prolong it nor kiss her openly, as that would cause all sorts of problems. "Congratulations, beloved," he whispered in her ear. "I'll see you this evening at the Hatching feast." G'rett gave her a wink, then nodded at Artemth. "You truly do complement your bonded, Artemth," he said quietly, gently rubbing the silver's head-knobs. "I know Quindara couldn't be any happier, and I'm happy for her that you chose her." Giving the silver dragonet a soft smile, G'rett turned to face the rest of the new Weyrlings. "Congratulations to all of you," he said cheerily. "I'm sure G'fal will be busy with your new lessons before long." He waved at them, then made his way off the Sands, knowing Coth had already departed himself.

J'sen's cheeks were burning bright red from embarrassment at his father's words. I can't believe what he just told to Calyssa's father! Amonth was also a bit curious by this bit of news. He looked up at J'sen, then at Freyath and finally Calyssa, then back at J'sen. What did he mean, you and Freyath's are more than friends, J'sen? The newly-promoted Weyrling had to shut his eyes for a moment. Umm...Amonth? Let's just say Calyssa and I are very close friends. When you're a bit older, I'll explain it all to you.
Misty, on the other hand, was annoyed at this sudden turn of events. How dare her pet be openly embarrassed by all this! Her eyes were now shot through with orange, a clear sign of agitation, and she rose from her pet's shoulder and chittered angrily at Jaylen. The queen firelizard then fluttered in front of Caltex, trilling at him, trying to get him to calm down, but she wasn't familiar enough with him to show him any sort of mental image. Darting over to Storm, she trilled and crooned at him, prevailing upon the tiny bronze to help her explain things to Caltex, that her pet was indeed fond of Calyssa, but J'sen would never dare dream of taking advantage of the young lady.
J'sen heard the Wingleader's congratulations, but was too preoccupied with the current crisis. He opened his eyes as Misty started to chitter angrily, and he simply shook his head. The queen firelizard was, once again, being a bit overprotective of him, but this time he was a bit grateful. He knew she would command Storm if necessary to help her set things straight, and it appeared she was already doing so.

Calyssa's face was still beat red and she couldn't think of anything to tell her father. She hadn't meant for him to find out quite like that. She had wanted to talk to him and explain everything. Freyath gently nuzzled Calyssa's hand. Calyssa? What is wrong? What have they done to upset you?
She gently rubbed her red's head. It's alright, sweetheart. Everything's fine. I'll explain later.
S'tex felt awful for his sister. He had known about what was going on, but he had never expected such a reaction from Caltex and Jaylen. He wasn't sure this was going to end well. Belenoth stood up straighter beside them. I'm going to give them a piece of my mind, the young bronze said. For upsetting Freyath.
S'tex quickly touched the bronze's head. It's alright, Belenoth. We'll take care of things. Just calm down. The bronze reluctantly sat back down.
Storm watched Misty closely. The little bronze chittered excitedly and hovered in front of Caltex. He liked J'sen and he wasn't going to let anyone hurt Calyssa and J'sen wouldn't. He made sure that Caltex understood that.
