Calyssa spent a little longer getting ready for dinner then she normally did. She was thankful that day that Sertex was in the male barracks. Otherwise she knew he would be wanting to know what was going on and she really didn't want to have to tell him yet. He'd only demand to know more.
The young candidate smoothed a hand over her coppery dress to get it to lay right. She didn't wear dresses all that often, but it felt nice to actually be in one for a bit. She had decided to pull her hair up in a sort of weave, twist type style that left her bangs framing her face. Once she was sure she looked okay she headed for the Dining Cavern.
Storm sat happily on her shoulder, hoping to be able to see Misty again. He had liked the little gold and wanted to play with her some more.

Jaysen had just finished washing up in the shared bathing chamber used by all the male Candidates. He dried himself off using a towel, then slipped into a pair of dark-colored breeches and pulled a long-sleeved tunic over his head and down over his torso. The material was a soft, muted copper in color. Tugging down on the hem of his tunic to remove any wrinkles, the young man then pulled his riding boots on before checking himself in a mirror. Perfect. Misty then flittered over and landed on her pet's shoulder, trilling her compliment. "Thanks Misty," Jaysen replied. "Best not keep Calyssa waiting."
He looked into the commons just as he caught sight of the young woman heading out towards the Dining Caverns. Misty crooned at Calyssa and Storm, and encouraged her pet to move faster. Chuckling, Jaysen quickened his pace so he could catch up. Quickly appraising Calyssa's appearance and noted just how beautiful she looked, he eventually matched her stride for stride, offering his arm. "You look beautiful," he commented, blushing slightly and offering his arm.

Storm craned his head around when he heard Misty. The bronze crooned happily when he saw her. he fluttered his wings happily and sat up straighter on Calyssa's shoulder.
Calyssa turned around and smiled when she saw Jaysen. She found herself flushing as she realized how well he had managed to match her outfit and how handsome he looked. 'Thank you," she said, slipping her arm through his. "And you look very handsome yourself," she added.

Grinning as if he'd won a large sum of marks in a game of high-stakes dragon poker, Jaysen escorted Calyssa towards the Dining Caverns. Most of the others were already present at this evening, but he led them over towards a couple of chairs at the Candidates' table that were empty. Pulling one out for Calyssa, he waited until she was seated before he would take the one next to her.
"I got to asking myself while getting cleaned up what color we might Impress to. Me, I'd be happy for either a Brown or Blue, but I'll be surprised if I wind up Impressing to a Bronze," Jaysen commented. "What do you think, Calyssa? Would it bother you if you Impressed to a Green?"

Calyssa glanced around the Dining Cavern. She grinned when she saw the shocked look on Sertex's face. She knew he'd find her later and have a ton of questions to ask, but for now she was with Jaysen and she was going to enjoy herself. She loved the sailor's company and definitely didn't mind getting to know him better.
The candidate slid into the offered seat. "Thank you kindly." She turned to where she could watch him with her dark blue eyes. "I think you'd make a great bronze rider." Calyssa shook her head. "I wouldn't have a problem with a green. The greens are gorgeous," she answered cheerily. She'd be happy with any color actually.

Jaysen felt his cheeks flush when Calyssa commented that he'd Impress highly. "I would think the tides are a bit more favorable towards me Impressing a Blue or Brown." Shrugging, he continued. "But, we'll see. And while I agree that yes, the Greens are beautiful, I didn't see any gold eggs on the Sands. Although to be honest, I would hope you Impress to a Green. That way, my Blue or Brown or Bronze can give Chase," he said with a playful wink. He then glanced around to see Calyssa's brother Sertex give an incredulous look, prompting the sailor to shake his head as if suggesting to the other not to worry. Jaysen then looked back at Calyssa. "Seems your brother is a bit taken back at us sitting next to each other. Maybe we should make sure he isn't treading in rough waters?"

Calyssa smiled. She hadn't meant to embarrass him, but she did think he would Impress a higher ranked color. "I don't know, a brown wouldn't be bad for you either," she smiled. She liked all the dragons. The young candidate shook her head. "I agree. I didn't see any either." Which she wasn't upset about really. She'd be happy with any color. Her face flushed as she looked over at him. "Really? You'd want your dragon to chase mine?" she asked, hope in her voice. She knew a bit about the flights and what to expect and she actually liked the idea of Jaysen being her first. Calyssa chuckled at his question. "Sertex is just being protective. He still sees me as his little sister. But I apologize now if he catches you later and asks you questions. I'm sure he'll do the same to me."
Storm chittered softly at Misty. What their pets were talking about was boring, so he would much rather pay attention to the gold.

He had to blush a bit, but he leaned over and whispered in Calyssa's ear. "Of course I'd want my dragon to Chase yours. Or if you wind up Impressing to a male and I to a female. I'd want yours to Chase mine every time and win. I'd hope you would want the same if the situation was reversed." Jaysen leaned back, his cheeks reddened, but the twinkle in his eye suggested he had more to say. He leaned back in. "I know we haven't spent a whole lot of time together, Calyssa. But as long as I'm able to, I'd love to spend as much time with you as possible. We may have to wait for about a Turn or two while going through our Weyrling training. But I'm willing to wait for you, if you'll wait for me in return."
He had to lean back again and nod when Calyssa said her brother was being protective. "I can understand. I would do the same had my little sister been in this very same situation. But your brother doesn't need to worry."
Misty chittered back at Storm, likewise bored with her pet. But protocol dictated she remain on her pet's shoulder for now.

Calyssa noticed Jaysen's slight flush and smiled. She knew her face was a bit red as well. The teen nodded. "Of course I'd have mine Chase yours if it came down to that," she answered without thinking. She couldn't believe how rash she was being and how much she liked Jaysen. The girl studied him as her blue eyes twinkled. "I'd wait," she whispered back. "I've never been with anyone before and I care for you a lot, so I would definitely wait," she assured him. She shivered slightly at the thought. She had never expected to meet someone like Jaysen.
She glanced back at Sertex with a shake of her head. "I guarantee he'll worry until he knows for sure you won't hurt me. Which I know you won't," she said, turning back to Jaysen. She'd try to convince Sertex of that later.
Storm seemed to sigh as he shifted on Calyssa's shoulder. Like Misty he felt he needed to stay where he was, but he was bored and wanted to play.

Jaysen clamped his hand to his mouth, hiding the gaping jaw that dropped in surprise. So, Calyssa would want hers to Chase just as much as he wanted his to Chase hers? Jaysen didn't know exactly how much control he could exert over his dragon, but with Calyssa's frank admission of not being with anyone in a certain manner...then again, Jaysen never took advantage of a young lady's innocence, either. He'd always been too pragmatic. Yet here was this young lady sitting right next to him who just said she would wait for him. Stunned, he slowly removed his hand from his mouth. "I care you for a lot, too," he replied. "I just don't want to rush things between us." Maybe I should send word back home to find out if Father has returned from his latest journey, he thought to himself. I'm sure he'll want to meet Calyssa's father so they can discuss this particular matter after the Hatching.
Misty picked up on her pet's mood and chittered softly at him, prompting him to reach up and gently rub the queen firelizard's muzzle before the young man focused back on Calyssa. "If it helps any, I can always get with your brother later this evening so he and I can talk."

Calyssa glanced over at Jaysen. She wasn't sure if she may have gone too far in what she had said. She knew of other girls in her Hold who were already married by 15 or who had messed around with guys. That had never appealed to Calyssa. She had always wanted to wait for the right person. But maybe Jaysen didn't feel that way. She wasn't sure now. Calyssa actually relaxed at his next words. "I know," she said softly. "I'm only 15 and we're candidates now," she agreed. She wondered now what her father would think when he showed up at the Hatching. Maybe she should give him a bit of a warning.
Storm chittered softly and rubbed his head against Calyssa's cheek. He didn't like when she seemed confused. She reached up and smoothed her fingers down his back. "Hmm, that might be a good idea. That way he knows what you're like," she said thoughtfully.

"Fifteen, huh? I would've thought you were sixteen turns at best." Jaysen had to shake his head at that one. You sure know how to get yourself into some tricky waters, old boy, he had to chide himself silently. "I'm not much older than you. Eighteen turns. But look at it this way, Calyssa. The Hatching isn't far off. We Impress, then we go through our Weyrling training which lasts for eighteen months or so. But I made you a promise, Calyssa. I'll find a way to keep myself only for you."
Jaysen kept glancing over at Sertex then finally waved the other Candidate over, gesturing to a now-empty seat across from him and Calyssa.

"I'll be sixteen next month," she answered proudly. Her birthday was in a little over a month and her and Sertex usually did something special together. "You're right," she smiled. "You're not that much older then I am." Which actually she didn't care how much older he was. She still cared deeply for him. Calyssa nodded. "18 months isn't too bad," she said. "I think we can last that long," she teased him. she knew she'd make herself last that long. She wanted to be with Jaysen.
She giggled when she saw Sertex was still watching them. Sertex soon picked up his mug and the remainder of his food and joined Calyssa and Jaysen.

Hmm.... Jaysen's eyes narrowed as his mind started to formulate a plan. If Calyssa was paying any attention, she'd notice that something was going on in his mind. Which means I'll have to do something special for her naming day. I have two, maybe four sevendays at best. Perhaps after I get with Father, he'll give me an idea on what to get Calyssa. He returned her smile, but wanted to give the impression he was actively thinking on how to surprise her. "Oh, I think we can definitely last that long," he returned Calyssa's comment with a wink before turning to face Sertex. "Seems you've been caught off-guard by the way I've been acting towards your sister, Sertex," he addressed the other fellow. "If I were in your shoes, I'd be doing the same thing, wanting to keep a close eye on my younger sister Madilyn."

Calyssa did notice that Jaysen seemed to be thinking something, but she wasn't quite sure what. Maybe later she'd ask him. But then again if he didn't want to tell her maybe she shouldn't. I just don't want to upset him or have him think I'm prying, she thought. She liked him a lot and she didn't want to chance doing anything wrong. The teen nodded. "Agreed. We'll just help each other if we have to."
Sertex kept his hands around his mug as he watched Jaysen. "I don't want to see my sister hurt again," he said quietly. It had taken him a good 2 sevendays to get her to talk again after Bradan's death and he didn't want to see that happen again.
