Jaysen practically coughed as he realized the trip was shorter than he expected, expelling his breath with a gasp and had to take a few minutes to calm his breathing down along with his heartbeat. That had been an odd experience, going between even though it only lasted for a short moment. It was nearly instantaneous, but nerve-wracking. Nothing but pure darkness. He shook his head, and supposed the next time that happened, he would need to be better prepared for it.
Kiyoni called over her shoulder to ask if he was okay, and Jaysen cleared his throat just as Misty reappeared on her perch. "I'm fine," he said. "That was a rather unusual experience. I'm going to have to get used to it after I Impress." The young man looked down for a moment at an unfamiliar place, but it seemed almost like home. Almost. Nothing could ever take the place of his beloved Azure Isle, but Nova would do. "Nova looks fantastic from up here. Always did like visiting other ports-of-call." He flashed a grin at the Searchrider and her blue firelizard. Misty likewise trilled her assessment. "What's the first order of business after we make landfall?"

Kiyoni smiled. She remembered her first trip between. It had been the scariest moment of her life. And there was no way to really prepare anyone for between. It was just something you had to experience.
"It gets easier after you've done it a few times," she assured him. Elliwodth started a slow spiral down to the Bowl, so Jaysen could look as long as he wanted. "First, we'll find Candidate Master Arktos," she said, her voice cracking just a bit. She wasn't sure if she was ready to face him yet. "He'll be the one in charge once we land," she explained. "He looks after all the candidates and helps you learn everything you need to know about dragons." She closed her eyes tightly and willed the tears away.

Jaysen thought he could tell something had been bothering Kiyoni, based on her voice cracking, but wasn't sure if it was his place to ask. He simply nodded when she told him he'd have to meet the Candidate Master first. "Fair enough," he said, continuing to admire the view. Misty snuggled in tight around her pet's neck and shoulders. She was admiring the view as much as he was. She chirped excitedly at him, then trilled at the blue firelizard and his pet.
Still, the young sailor was the type of person whose protective streak often showed, and his gut feeling told him he needed to let the Searchrider know he'd be a friendly voice. He leaned forward. "Searchrider," he said, with some reluctance. "I know this may sound awkward...even though I'll be a Candidate and all, and I hardly know you...but if you need to talk to me about anything, I'll be glad to listen. I was protective of my little sister and she often came to me with her problems. I know you're much older than she is - even older than I am - but if it makes you feel any better I'll be a younger brother to you. That is, if you don't mind." He sat back, blushing, and Misty trilled encouragingly at her pet before nuzzling him.

Kiyoni unclipped her straps. At least it seemed like Jaysen was okay with everything. And he didn't seem seem nearly as nervous and timid as some of the young candidates that she had brought here. Rivi returned Misty's greeting and flapped his wings happily. Having a new playmate would be fun.
The search rider's face flushed. She hadn't realized she had been that transparent. "Thank you, Jaysen," she said quietly. A few tears escaped her eyes. Jaysen reminded her so much of T'mil that it hurt. And he seemed so understanding. "I'm sorry," she whispered. "I haven't been a real great search rider today." She felt awful. She was going to have to pull herself together.

Jaysen likewise unclipped his straps, and dismounted from Elli's back and slid onto the ground, landing on his feet. Misty trilled happily. They were in a new home, and she had a new playmate. The sailor then turned to Kiyoni and noticed she had been crying, and without thinking he stepped forward to hug his adoptive older sister. "It's alright, sis," he whispered. "I can see you've been through a lot. I'm sure I'll be busy with my chores and all, but maybe you can come watch me teach the landlubbers how to properly sail and fish if I get a chance." Jaysen pulled away and gave his new 'sister' a boyish grin. He walked over to the tethering strap to unhook the chest he'd brought with him, and started whistling a sailing tune. Misty soon joined in, her trilling becoming part of the melody.
He looked around for a moment, still whistling. The chest fell to the ground with a soft thud, and the sailor reached up to pat the Green dragon on her head to thank her, wiggling his eyebrows. Misty flew off her pet's shoulder to nuzzle her thanks to her bigger cousin, momentarily ceasing her part of the song, then returned to her perch and resumed the melody.

Kiyoni watched quietly as Jaysen slid off. It didn't appear that he was going to need much help learning to get on and off a dragon. That was good. Her eyes widened a little in surprise at the hug, but right now she needed it. She buried her head just briefly as she pulled herself back together. What a mess. She just fell apart in front of a candidate. "Thanks for understanding, Jaysen," she said softly. Kiyoni nodded. "I think I'd like that."
Elliwodth crooned softly and rubbed her head against Jaysen's hand. She liked the new candidate and his little gold. Rivi filttered around and cheeped happily. Kiyoni managed a weak smile as she watched.
"If you want to leave you chest here with Elli we could go see Arktos and get you settled in," she suggested.

Shrugging, Jaysen could only feel pity for the Searchrider. "Rough seas don't always last forever. Sure, the waves might threaten to capsize the boat, but if you steer her right and pull hard at the oars, you'll soon find you're through on the other side. Soaked to the skin, but a little seawater never hurt anyone." He patted Kiyoni on her shoulder. "And you're welcome. If I Impress at this Hatching and make it as a Rider, we're celebrating. I just hope you're not adverse to seafood." He winked at his older 'sister', then nodded when she suggested to leave the chest with Elli to see the Candidate Master.
"Sounds like my course is set," he said. "No time like the present. After you."
